Horseweed (Conyza canadensis) is not a common wild edible plant for many, but this sure is a great plant to know if you want to add a mild spicy flavour to your foods! Horseweed loves disturbed areas, and if you find it, chances are you may find lots of it! For more info see the link below.

So grateful for this video. I do have horseweed in my garden and had not known the identity. I knew this was considered a weed, but had been impressed by the height and the many insects. Happy to learn that edible and medicinal. Although your "sparingly" warning means I already have an excessive amount and need to continue pulling many of the plants out.

It is a great plant to use as a spice - not as a "lettuce-green"!

Many natives also used the stalks to start friction fires using the hand drill method. I've actually done this and it works well.

I was looking for lookalikes of American Burnweed to make sure there wasn’t anything similar that was poisonous. I intend to try the burnweed and your video popped up. Now you have a new follower and I’ve shared your video with many. We might need to know what “weeds” we can eat and use. Thanks for doing this

Welcome!!! And thank you so much for subscribing and sharing - I am so grateful! I believe we will need to know what weeds are food - foraging is a skill, I feel, is important to have. In any case - I am glad you are here!

Thanks for the video! How can one tell C. canadensis from C. bonariensis and C. alba? I’ve been reading about differences in the bracts but I’m a little confused about it and can’t find any pictures or videos of them online.

I bought a house and am letting the yard grow to heal the soil. A huge patch of this is growing close to the house. Our area is known for having tons of flies. Is it possible they planted it for the bug repellent property?

You didn’t snap it off to look inside the stem to show what it looks like n the underside of leaves n edges of leaves n etc… I have a few tall plants that kind of look like this but I can’t tell if it’s the same. 😢

The taste will let you know. After you have tested the leaf on your forearm to ensure you have no allergic reaction, taste a leaf or two. After a couple of seconds you'll get a mild hot sauce-like sensation.

Thanks for the video! One little critique: when speaking about native peoples, don't use past tense. THEY ARE STILL HERE!!!
@EdibleWildFood-1
@EdibleWildFood-1 Жыл бұрын
Past tense because of how the First Nations people "used" it. Not because they are no longer here.
