I am glad to be able to identify a vole now. I'm in Virginia now, but in central Kentucky (Frankfort) I had a real problem with these rodents. They mainly did their damage during the winter, I could see their lines in the snow, we did not get very deep snows usually. In the spring when the snow melted we could see exactly what you showed, open lines dug all over our yard. When it rained it would funnel through those lines and cause even more erosion damage. We also had problems with moles, they did more damage than the voles, the moles I encountered were much smaller than the one you displayed, but definitely a mole. I will keep an eye out here in Virginia for rodents, moles maybe they won't be a problem here. Who knows what other critters I will find. Thank you for this great content.

I appreciate your identifying these guys for me. All last year when I started to notice tunnels I'd thought I had moles. I'm from Montana now I'm in Ohio so the varmints are a little different. Since I'd thought I had moles I put out a couple poisons. It's not my preferred way of stopping these guys nor did it work. I'm not sure yet if gofers and moles need different types of poisoning but since I put moles poison out and I had gofers that might explain things. What has happened is that I've had an invasion! I've got tunnels EVERYWHERE! So far I don't think I've evicted one gofer. But at least now I know they are gofers and I've found your video site.... Thanks

Hey Shawn, I moved from SoCal (gophers & moles) to just outside Minneapolis. Our house was built farm land so I had no clue about voles. As I'm pretty tiddy about mowing my lawn, I would bag the grass clippings & take to city compost sight. Well, vole tunnels & nests started appearing all over my backyard. As I got tired of having to drive to the compost sight & I decided start mulching the grass. All of a sudden the vole infestation stopped. No more tunnels or nests. I'm thinking of writing to the U of Minn agriculture dept & see if they have an explanation. Thought you'd like to know.

Got all three out here in Oregon. Mostly voles where I live in the country. LOADS of them. Because of this, there are a lot of hawks, eagles, and owls to eat them. Foxes and coyotes as well. The farmcats kill loads of them too, but it doesn't dwindle their numbers at all. It's like they spontaneously generate to feed all the wildlife. Created to be eaten. They're real dumb too and easy prey to catch. Also docile and don't fight back like shrews, rats or mice when caught. Nature's little chicken nuggets.

Hey Shawn just wanted to let you know your videos are awesome!! I think it’d be cool if you showed trapping for larger animals or do more rat traps.

Can moles attack root crops like carrots, radishes, potatoes, etc.? Tunneling invaders have wreaked havoc on ours a few times. Mounds made me think they were moles, and the ones I caught looked like moles, but much smaller than yours and with light brown fur similar to your vole.

I know Voles can be root eaters. My Grandma had one that ate the roots strait off a plant but you didn’t know it until you picked up the plant and it’d have no roots!

Zeke770 last year we started building raised box beds to alleviate some of the back strain weeding and such. Nailed flashing on the legs so rodents would have a tough time climbing. So far, so good!! :)

I constantly have mole's digging tunnels in my yard. Not those big mounds like you showed us but thousands on tiny mounds about the size of a quarter. I flatten down the tunnel then wait for another tunnel to develop [if I have time] once I see movement then I step back 4ft and blast my shotgun spreading the buckshot about a foot wide over the section of the NEW tunnel that I've spotted movement at. Next I dig up the mole who is usually about a foot deep. This works every time but the worst part is waiting on the mole to start digging another tunnel again.

I always used to get voles and shrews mixed up. Thank goodness our moles aren't usually so big in Maryland. No gophers here usually. Just the massive groundhogs.

I've had the mounds with voles too. They also like to block up the holes so if you uncover them and add some water via a bucket, they will sometimes pop up or later that night will block the hole again and you know you have a hole to set a trap.

"these are the moles they're pretty big in my area" lol your not kidding the moles in my backyard are barely a quarter that size, they fall in my pool and die all the time. Also those vole holes look almost identical to the chipmunk tunnels I have all over my property.

I do not know which U.S. state do you live in, but what are the specific species for these three rodents (Scalopus aquaticus? Microtus pennsylvanicus?)? Because at home in France it is not at all the same (the gophers are nonexistent there)
