I'm so glad I found you! 😭 I was getting anxiety about becoming an artist because I'm old (30) and I'm just starting out and realizing that drawing and painting makes me happy (besides eating food). I hope I can keep this up and become a much better artist. Seriously. Thank you!

Same boat with being "old" and having anxiety about starting "late". Tip: You're not old, and it's not too late. Every industry has people who enter in their 30s, 40s, and 50s. I excelled in art back in high school, and should have gone on to university for a BFA, but I lost my mom in my first year of college and sort of lost all motivation for anything for a number of years. Now I'm back in school, but not for art, because I somehow got it into my head that I can't draw anymore... except, I can, and I just need to start practicing and taking lessons again... SO, I'm taking a studio art class for non-majors this semester and might try to transfer into an animation program once I rebuild my portfolio... Point is, whatever your situation, find learning resources around you and just go for it, even if it starts with printer paper and a mechanical pencil, drawing what you see in your backyard. It's your life, just dive in and do what drives you forward. And @Laura Price, thanks for existing and making these videos. You're giving me a lot of hope :D

I’m not exactly a beginner artist, but I think if someone would have told me to specifically “draw a lot” I would probably be better than I am now lol, I didn’t draw that much a few years ago, now I draw a stupid amount.... so far the video is great 👏

Hey Linda. I'm a keen artist reliving my 3rd career at the ripe young age of 59 yrs. Used to paint and sketch for pleasure when I was younger but got into the teaching english language business which I loved for 25 yrs. Now I've refound my passion for art again and especially blender and animation (krita). Love your enthusiasm and smarts. Many of us have a multitude of careers we would of loved to be part of. Wonderful to experience one of those through your eyes. Big fan. Keep inspiring those that may reach for their goals and for those who are living vicariously to the world's that might have been.

Number 5 was so on point for me. I've always wanted to draw and turn that into a career, but I've always had the idea stuck in my head that I need a style... which I do not have yet so I've been at a standstill. Thank you for your videos! They've been so helpful and eye opening.

I used to draw all the time when I was younger and I out grew it but now at the age of 26 I realized that's truly what I love and am now learning all the basics

1.) *Draw a lot* _(from life...take your sketchbook everywhere you go and draw what you see)_ (0:32) 2.) *Take figure drawing classes* (1:23) _(if classes are not availabe to you in your area, go online:_ line-of-action.com/ _(example of an online figure drawing class (and more))_ 3.) *Challenge yourself* _(by drawing things, that you want to improve in)_ (2:26) 4.) *Draw what you love* _(your interest in certain things will make you keep drawing)_ (3:40) 5.) *Don't aim for a "style"* _(being versatile in styles is better than being stuck in one particular style)_ (4:15) 6.) *Look at professional art* _(go to museums and 'study' the old masters, and/or read "The Art of..." books)_ (5:04) 7.) *Believe in yourself* _(drawing is a learned skill...if you're willing to put the time and effort in, then you can become a great artist)_ (5:50)

At the beginning of this video, your first tip was to draw a lot and, I admit, I kinda rolled my eyes at this because almost EVERY artist recommends that. I mean sure, yes this could be true, but for some, it just...isn't. What caught my attention, however, was your tip number 5 which was "don't aim for a style" and I was like ASTONISHED and INSPIRED. And at your last tip "believe in yourself", that made me even MORE INSPIRED. You touched my heart with this video and now, I don't feel less discouraged to draw (because these past few days, my self-esteem was really low due to my art and I doubted myself whether I'm going to be a good artist or not). So, thank you very much, Ms. Laura Price, for this video. This has been a blessing to me. :)

I just finished my first semester at a community college and I took Drawing 1, for the last month of the semester we did figure drawing. I was extremely nervous because I had never seen a nude man before, but honestly? The shock value plummets after the first 1 minute drawing. I tend to look away while the model adjusts themselves between poses and I think that helped me. My art teacher said that we should think of the figure as an object and break it down into sections. Even if you cant take a figure drawing class, having a friend who will willingly pose in like a tanktop and shorts or something is extremely helpful.I feel like a better artist after that class and that last month was hands down the most useful part of any art class ive ever taken.

Thanks for the tips! I too have problems with environment drawing and I haaaate it!! But I wanna get better at it so I've been practicing every now and then. I'm okay at it but no where good so I think the environment challenge will help me out whenever I have the available time to draw when I'm off work! I also wanna do figure drawing classes but like I said I don't have the time so I might just start finding pictures online and use that in my free time

while drawing from life is a great skill to have, using reference photos to understand (not to create a photorealistic copy) can help you to slow down and analyze the different components. I use a 3d program with a model that I can rotate and move the limbs around to get the exact reference I need.

We need to hurry up on lite AR glasses. I feel like that would be a great substitute for the figure drawing, if you can't be in person. Plus you could move around and examine the subject as much as needed to learn and redraw since it could be a recording. Would love this for locations and objects too....someday!

Tip 7 is the best tip. I hear so many people tell me "I wish I could draw like you" and I'm not even that good. I tell them, "if you want to draw, you just need to practice. A lot." They always respond with, "no, you have talent. I could never do that." It's so frustrating because a) they could if they gave it real effort, and b) it minimizes my own hard work to simply 'natural talent'. I don't know one single artist who woke up one day and could just draw without putting in thousands of hours of hard work. If you think you can't draw, then you never will. Tip 7: Believe in yourself. Best advice.

I honestly believe perseverance is more important than talent. Drawing is a skill that can be learned. I lacked discipline and didn't nurture my talent and now i can barely draw anymore. Start with the basics, practice daily and never use 'not having talent' as an excuse not to start. Good luck! (for instance, i really like Proko's tutorials, they're logic, in depth but also easy to follow along with - kzfaq.info/love/lM2LuQ1q5WEc23462tQzBg )

it helps but isn't' necessary if your work is good enough. It's a nice and encouraging environment to be in. You learn a lot from peers and professors -- getting feedback is a faster way to improve. Also, a big part of this industry is knowing people and many people and making connections with not just professors/professional but your fellow students. In my past four years at college, many have said "be nice to the people around you because these are the people that you're going to be working with and getting jobs from in the future"
