Grant, I’m 57 and been golfing for about 15 years and still learning...this particular lab expertly explains how to fix one of my major issues...I used this on the course today by saying “gather” out loud to myself at the top of my swing and even though I knew I should pause a beat, the way you showed this helped me immensely...that little pause helped my tempo smooth out and gather for a more consistent shot...everyone has a “quick fix” but with some practice this particular lesson smoothed out my swing and created better tempo...thank you

Matt's comment about the golf swing being simple really drives it home. KZfaq is a fantastic place to help teach and tweak yourself to get better but there is so much information out there that it can become polluted and if you start doing everything you see to try and fix a simple issue, you're going to make it worse on yourself. I had that exact problem. I started just working one thing a week and getting a lesson every Saturday and my game is getting pure. Love the content, Grant!!

I've found that breathing in on my backswing and out on the down swing has helped tremendously in syncing my body up. Especially with the brief hold on the down swing which I time with my exhale.
@gregmaland5318

That's a good one. I usually try to take a deep breath before starting my backswing, then as I exhale, I perform my entire swing. But your suggestion sounds really good.

I think it is important to mention the weight of the the golf club. To feel the end end of golf club in order to make a smooth backswing with a firm grip pressure. Don’t squeeze too hard or you won’t be able to feel the weight of the club and get a smooth swing. Feel the weight so you can whip it the best and not try to force the club as Grant mentioned in the video. Feeling for the weight of the club has helped me become more consistent at making a golf swing with good tempo.

That "pause that refreshes" at the top, before starting down is critical, a 1/4 of a beat is plenty. Also, I think a lot of beginners haven't learned yet to make a golf swing rather than a golf hit. The hit reflex is very powerful and can really mess you up if you're not aware you're giving in to urge to "hit". Be as committed to the half of the swing after the ball as you are the half leading up to the ball.
@3spressoShot
@3spressoShot 2 жыл бұрын
another thing to consider is that normally that pause at the top is not actually something you do. like backswing-stop-downswing.. its a natural pause that happens while your shifting weight but haven't started dropping that trail arm.
@kidsgotsomeskills
@kidsgotsomeskills 2 жыл бұрын
the reason of pause at the top is, as Garrett pointed out in his video, and also I pretty much agree, is to relieve/ease any unwanted tension you have during the backswing. I think that is the reason for many people that a pause is necessary for a consistent ball strike.
@canefan17

@@3spressoShot this is correct imo. Golf is 1 athletic motion. Probably good to think of it that way (same way you would if you were a pitcher). Good stuff. I like to gradually move to the front foot as the club is still moving back on the way to the top. At top, I like to be 50/50 on pressure, then roughly 75 percent pressure on the lead foot at left arm parallel on the downswing.

The reason you want to gather is to make sure your swing path doesn't adjust at the top. That is my biggest fault with my swing. When I get to the top I naturally want to come down different than what I came up which in my case results in a fade or slice... Great video and content for free! Cant thank you enough.. Good stuff. I think most hackers are way too late shifting their weight to their left side. A lot of good golfers will tell you they start that weight transfer before they even reach the top of the back swing. Gotta avoid swaying. Those three guys have great weight transfer.

@bobbys4327
@bobbys4327 2 жыл бұрын
From someone who has done that in the past I can say what helps me: at the top of the swing I think about keeping my back to the target just a split second longer. This allows me time to get my weight shift started and have a good brace with my left side before I start my upper body. When I do this it helps dropping the club right in the slot and rotating through; I nail it!

When you talk about weight transition more towards the lead foot, how should the knee move and what’s a good cue for that transition?
@kidsgotsomeskills
@kidsgotsomeskills 2 жыл бұрын
I think, when you starts your downswing with a hip turn, it's very natural to shift your weight to the lead foot. Without a golf club in your hand, you can even try it at a home. With a golf stance, do a backswing, your weight should be shifted to your back foot; then turn your hip to initiate your downswing, your lead foot will feel some pressure. However, it is not necessary to shift your weight to your lead foot. You see some people steps back after hit a good shot, which means they didn't really shift their weight.

No not at all! it’s just the same as baseball most home runs are hit at 80% of the hardest swing. Often times in golf an 80 percent swing will go just as far an 100% often with more control. And even if you lose 5 yards per club but you’re hitting more greens and being closer to the pin then it seems like a good trade off.

I went to doing a 1,2,3 swing and that helped a lot. 1 back, 2 drop the arms below the path, and 3 have at it. Feels more a circle than a straight back and pull through. That not only helped my rhythm, but stopped the occasional over the top swing.

I think Morikawa has the best tempo on tour to learn from. Very slow in comparison to other pros but is very controlled in his swing. People learning the game see guys like Bryson and want to swing out of their shoes but he’s the 1% of guys that can do this. In my opinion the best tempo is where you can feel and control and be conscious of the motions you are making.

@@nate_feag8044 I get that, I just think its the best to learn from. I believe Collin is the best iron player today because of this. He is very aware about every factor through his whole swing. I play with a faster tempo than him as do the majority of people, but especially for most golfers the main problem in the swing is keeping the club face square to the target at impact. If you start with a slower more controlled swing as a beginner I think it will help a lot with club face control has your swing speed and tempo start to increase.
