How to Improve Trumpet Range
This lip slur exercise has helped me improve my high register on trumpet. I was introduced to this trumpet range exercise by my trumpet professor, Dr. Amy Gilreath-Major, at Illinois State University.

A Random User definitely! Once you know the pattern of the exercise, then you can apply it to higher registers. I recently expanded the exercise to go to double g. Hey I’m starting to get back into it, any tips on how to improve middle register? I can barely get to a G above the staff.
@TheBlackTrumpeter
@TheBlackTrumpeter 2 жыл бұрын
1) approach trumpet in a relaxed state with good/balanced posture 2) learn how to properly use breath support and tongue level to do most of the work for you rather than squeezing or pinching with the middle of the lips. 3) Sing/hum/whistle to match the pitch you want to play. If you can produce the note from within and not rely on the instrument to play the note, you will be more accurate.

Great exercise! I particularly like the fact that it goes up the triad , then adds the sixth rather then the octave. Reason being is it can be much more difficult to slur up a fourth (like most range studies utilizing full major arpeggios) rather then a whole step when working on your range.
@TheBlackTrumpeter
@TheBlackTrumpeter 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks but I can't take the credit. Just sharing what I've learned and what worked for me 😄 Yeah man! I like those aspects as well. It really tests how efficient I am with my air support, air speed and tongue arch. But the thing I'm thinking about is making sure all the notes have the same tone quality as much as possible. The body takes care of the rest. Although I know what all the mechanisms are that produce the sound I want; I don't focus on those minute details.

I've been going through a major embouchure change. My horn used to be pointed upwards and I would blow harder and activate the abdominals to play high notes and I would top out at around F/F# above the staff. I would also form cuts on my gums because I would press the horn into my face to player louder and/or higher. I now am trying to play more efficiently with my horn down, no face pressure, no abdominals (except for when playing louder, not higher) and I've been using your videos to help me. Thanks.

I know this comment is old, but are you not suppose to use abdominal to play higher? I've been playing for a little over a year now and when I play anything past a high E I can definitely feel my abs working.

Great vid. I have some thoughts on this: The important part of this exercise is the pause. During the pause, it’s best to think about what you just did: what worked, and what didn’t. I like to think that my brain is “smart”, and my embouchure is “dumb”, and these slow, deliberate exercises help us physically reflect on what we’re doing, to help our “dumb” embouchure get it right eventually. It takes a long time, but with consistency the payoff is totally worth it. Great content sir! 👊🎺

Do you have any tips for not clenching up when getting to higher notes? I play liturgical music and descents tend to be up there, but to deal with the higher notes I tighten my lips and I end up squeezing the trumpet against my lips... I just want to try to break that habit this summer, my band teacher tells me not to tighten up, but I just can’t seem to stop myself. Thank you for this excercise!

I was wondering what type of mouthpiece you would recommend? I'm a horn player picking up trumpet so I dont exactly know what I'm doing lol

For the beginners it would be helpful if you turn to other side and clearly show the buttons you press. Thanks for the video !

Alex Magala No problem. Thanks for watching! I honestly wouldn’t recommend this exercise for beginners but I do have the fingerings for all of the notes on the pdf

Hey, I played trumpet for a while and then I switched to tuba. After coming back to trumpet I found that I could no longer play as high as a used to. Is there anything else you can recommend for that?

Very nice excercise! Thanks a lot! What do you mean by TIP No. 3?
@TheBlackTrumpeter
@TheBlackTrumpeter 6 жыл бұрын
Robert Duis never practice when your embouchure is already tired or fatigued because it creates bad habits. So rest as much as possible.

is there a reason for those alternate fingerings like high e flat being 23 or high d being 13?

Can you please help me improve? I can barely get passed the G in the C (Bb Concert) scale and sometimes I can barely get to the G.

Hey proffessor, moving the ring valve makes a difference in play tones?....
@TheBlackTrumpeter

Yeah moving the 1st and 3rd tuning slides make a huge difference in our sound and intonation. It takes time to get the coordination down but after a while it will become second nature.

Is it alright if the higher notes aren't coming out completely clean? Or is it one of those exercises where it's not worth it unless the tone is perfect.

I seem to have lost my chops,how can I get them back again? thank you....
@TheBlackTrumpeter
@TheBlackTrumpeter 6 жыл бұрын
Start nice and easy at first where you're playing a couple of minutes per day until your chops can handle the swing of things again. How did you lose your chops? Was it because of overplaying, injury, time away from practicing /the horn...etc?

It's great man - I go comfortably to the double g and then rest. It feels like if I do this everyday the notes seem closer together, and speak easier.

I play horn and trumpet (mostly horn) and I have an insane range (7 octaves). Here’s my problem though: any time that I have to go above C in the staff, I have to completely reshape and reset my embouchure and that takes a few crucial seconds. How do I fix this? (If I go higher with my regular embouchure I get terrible range and tone).
