In this video I´m going to talk about the importance of experimentation and play when painting and creating artwork. And I will share how I bring these elements into my own art making process and why it is such a powerful way to improve your painting skills and artwork.
I started this painting over the Summer but haven't worked on it in a couple months. I wouldn't necessarily say that I was stuck but my original idea had changed.I thought I was going in one direction with the painting but I lost the excitement I had for it. Take a look and see what I did to change all that and how you can use this approach on your own art making journey.

At the moment I feel I’ll never be able to paint again. I can’t get back into it😢I feel so sad. I was ripped apart by a So called Art teacher she told me one of my paintings was mad. I’ve never had such an experience, I keep telling myself to man up ! but I can’t stop thinking of the put down. I’m hoping if I keep watching you you’ll help me cos your so inspirational. ❤

I completely understand how easy it is to loose excitement in a painting and find myself at a stand still. Once I get to a point in a painting where I am just making changes but not actually making improvements I put it away for awhile. I love your work and your videos have shown me how to loosen up and not focus on the end results. I have learned a great deal. Thank you 🙏

I always seem to have stacks of paintings that are between half and almost finished and like you I must wait awhile to make changes to them. I guess it helps me to see the painting with fresh eyes and time away from the piece also make me more objective towards my own work. Thanks for sharing and watching :)

yes, the creative feelings come and go and when they come they are so strong I'll paint for hours and days in a row. Then when I am out of ideas ...nothing. Music is a must!

The more I paint, and the more I draw, the more I overcome roadblocks... I have learned to expect creativity lulls once in a while, and thus take a break from the art piece. Your art demonstrations are very inspirational!🌺

I believe it was Van Gough who said 'Many painters are afraid of the blank canvas but the blank canvas is afraid of the painter who dares and who has broken the spell of "you can't" once and for all'. :) I've been experimenting with scratching words into the painting. They are very subtle, almost invisible (because I use a lot of scratching anyway) but worth putting in I think. I'm also realising the importance of 'horizons' in landscape painting and beginning to explore making the horizon subtle and broken and as close as possible to 'not there'. It's an interesting experimental process and as you say in the video, that's what keeps it fresh and sends me to the studio six days a week!

Yes me too! I don't think I could keep on painting year after year if I didn't experiment and play at least once in awhile. And the process evolves over time and ones personal style develops. I also find it interesting to watch other painters (such as yourself) their process and how they handle compositions and paint. We have the best job in the world, in my humble opinion! :)

Funny thing is I just started going through all my unfinished paintings trying to figure out what to do and just like that you come out with this video! I usually wind up with something completely abstract and crazy when I rescue a forgotten painting. It’s very freeing to just let the process take over and not even think about where it will go. The end result can be quite amazing.

Hello from Birmingham/England. I was looking for inspiration and I found some watching your KZfaq clips. Thank you very much. One of my mums best friends is Danish and I love her very much. Watching your KZfaq clips made me think of her and that added to the fact I liked your paintings (they are really extremely beautiful) and your attitude of freedom and playfulness in art, letting go of wanting to control it all and just go with the flow is the right attitude in my opinion. I love it! Thanks a million.🙂

Hi Marie Louise! It's me jade :) this is the channel I'll have art on one day if I get find the guts to do it :) I just happened to be on this channel when I had your video pop up and had to watch it right away and comment as soon as I did because it's great :) But this is seriously one of the best motivational videos! I, right now, have several canvases that I hit a point and was afraid to mess up what I had and wasn't sure then what I wanted to do so they just sit. I'm afraid of ruining them, even though they're just sitting, undone for no reason You're absolutely right about just taking a step, not thinking too much about what it should be, but just move! Such awesome advice! I need to be bold and also relax and just go for it. As you said, worst case, I paint over and have some added texture. I tend to worry about wasting paint because I feel I've not made what I wanted to or think its ugly...but I've wasted paint by hiding a partly painted canvas away because I don't know what to do with it...so why not just play and try things out anyway?! Exactly right!! Hopefully my hands will work good enough this week and I can do that, because I'm very excited about that. And great music playing ALWAYS makes things more fun :) I always play music when drawing or painting too :) I feel like it let's you move to the beat and sing along and have fun! I'll watch this again when I'm ready to paint to remind myself of these things :) Thanks so much!! 🥰 Also, I get used to seeing you working in your sketchbooks, so when you moved in front of the painting it took me a sec to realize how large the canvas was!! I know you normally do large work on canvas, but it threw me for a sec...so funny :)

I have given tips to a watercolorist during the opening of a gallery show where some of my work was displayed and that artist was so happy with new information! You may teach a technique, and if I do it, it will be different from how you do it, so VIVE LA DIFFERENCE! Tak!!!!
