Hey Everyone,
At the beginning of the year, when I quit my 9-5 job, I stated in a vlog that I was going full time with KZfaq and I was planning to embark on further motorcycle training.
I wanted to cover road, track, offroad - really as many disciplines as I could!
I thought about doing my IAM qualification to try and test myself and of course wanted to learn lots in the meantime!
After 2 months of delays starting the course - due to illness and being unable to ride a bike, I started my IAM journey with my first two observed rides under my belt!
The first observed ride was with my mentor Dave Lindley, my second observed ride was with Harry Sharples and my most recent one was with Steven Pye. I had a few technical issues with the cameras on this one and it was one of my most mind over matter days riding with IAM.
If you would like to read a more in-depth breakdown of this day: please refer to my website for the blog/diary.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy this vlog!
If you are interested in embarking on your IAM journey, there is info here:
www.iamroadsma...
I was not paid to attend this course and all views are my own
I hope you enjoy!

Enjoying these, Kate. Doesn’t matter if you’ve ridden to the moon and back, you can always learn. I find if I’m hyper aware then I end up doing a lot of “looking without seeing”. I think too much about the act of doing observations instead of seeing anything when I do them. Glad to see you’re enjoying these. Looking forward to more!

Another interesting one Kate. Don't over stress with the navigation, that's the Observer's responsibility. If you miss a turn they know their routes well enough to make adjustments on the fly ... and you may never know. 😉 I normally try to lead my associates across complex roundabouts or into a stopping place so there's no confusion. Good to hear you analysing your own riding. THAT is what starts to make you a better rider, when you can recognise when you could have done something better. Interesting that the group you are with give a different Observer each time. My group allocates you to one specific Observer. Looking forward to the next one.

Good ride. I think the constant talking through the things you observe and the actions you are taking or planning is great for your own confidence. It reminds you just how many things you are assessing, and how considered your riding is. It’s no accident that you’re a good rider - you’re in charge of the situation and seeing things almost before they happen…. So it looks calm and pre-ordained. I always marvel at the police outriders who get ministers and royals through traffic so swiftly and without incident - you are definitely getting there.

Well done. Those wee left/right shoulder checks DO become ingrained, I do it without thinking whenever I change speed and or direction, when I take off from lights and enter speed limit changes coming into/leaving villages etc. it really gets you in the habit of checking out where other road users are, spatial awareness. You are doing great, it's just being observed/assessed that is still freaking you out. but it's only your 3rd assessed ride, pretty soon you will relax more and start to enjoy it. so early days yet. well done missus.

It's not a navigation test 😂 we say that quite a lot. The point about looking for the indicators is to practice rear observation and being aware of what's all around you. It's easy to get tripped up by something that's happened in the past. It's more important to deal with what's happening in the moment. You're doing well from what I can see. This is so good for the IAM and advanced riding image as quite a lot of people seem to have a misconception of what it's about and that "it's not for me"

Interesting approach from your local group. When I did mine, I was assigned an observer who stuck with me until I took my test, apart from when I had my pre-test ride with the chief observer which allowed me to build up a relationship with him and give me some continuity, rather than have different observers each time. They also published their routes in advance so I knew where I was going which for me anyway then allowed me to concentrate on applying what they were asking me to do and planning my way through the hazard ahead, rather than keep looking in my mirror trying to spot when they put their indicators on. The examiner also used the same test route too which again was publicised. When I asked him why, he said the route he used never rode the same way twice but gave more continuity than taking candidates on different routes. Each to their own I guess.
@mikeroberts

Surprised they used published routes. The whole idea of the mirror check navigation is to up people's rear observation standards, not a navigation exercise.

Different groups do different approaches. Having different Observers at the start allows you to learn different bits and styles from different people. My local group does that at the start with themed rides, but if after these the associate needs further development, they get allocated to one observer until test.

Loving your content Kate, but just a tip for you, don't display the registration plate of your family cars etc, this can lead to all sorts of complications such as cloning for example. I once published on FB the plate belonging to the vehicle of a bailiff who was harassing me over an unpaid parking ticket and blocking my drive, and because he was kind enough to give me his mobile phone number he received a lot of calls inquiring about the sale of said vehicle from friends of mine.

@ReferenceFidelityComponents 11 ай бұрын
Iam advanced and rospa advanced are both based on the same standard which is quite a way above enhanced riding schemes. Enhanced does concentrate on safety bubble and observations but is a stepping stone to advanced or for the more experienced can be bypassed for advanced. The advanced is a good test of consistency in riding on a number of skills including observations, identification of hazards well in advance and making an action plan as you ride, enacting it smoothly and safely. This includes things like road positioning, gear, speed and acceleration sense, use of brakes, making progress, confidence, planning and execution of overtakes, dealing with junctions, demonstrating the use of limit points, acceleration sense, bike control at all speeds and many more on the list besides. It sounds overwhelming but with practice it becomes second nature and you become more self aware, a better, safer, smoother and probably a quicker rider. It helps make each ride enjoyable especially when everything clicks and you inject some sparkle and fun into the ride. For all boy racers who think you can ride, it can be a humbling experience and trust me, you soon learn that excessive speed and late braking don’t necessarily get you a to b any quicker and you’d be shocked at just how many hazards you normally fail to spot and just how much better and smoother you can ride once trained and practiced. I guarantee it will slow you down and make you think but enhance the quality and enjoyment of every ride👍

For what it’s worth I think the IAM method of guiding you via the use of their indicators is potentially dangerous. I agree that you should always have good rear observations but to encourage a rider to be constantly looking behind them using their mirrors when they are approaching junctions, (hazards), is bad practice. The observers know the routes, you don’t and therefore for this reason they should use Comms to assist the process and to reduce any risks and to put the student they are instructing more at ease. Some people may disagree with this rationale but if you ever observe Police motorcyclists under tuition, they use Comms to facilitate direction instructions for the simple reason that it is a safe method to do so. I’d be interested to hear what any IAM members, instructors etc think of this. 👍
@davidraymonde6474
@davidraymonde6474 Жыл бұрын
The examiners don't use comms on the test, so we would be putting the Associates at a significant disadvantage if the first time they had to look for signals, was when they were on their test. They will always be advised not to worry if they miss a signal, make a wrong turn etc., but if that happens too often, it's an indication that they are not doing enough rear observations. Signals will be given well in advance of the junction and no Associate would ever be encouraged to "be constantly looking behind". The police use comms for a lot more reasons than just directions as, for example, they may need to receive information or instructions when on active duty. If you look at video 16 about how to pass an Advanced Bike test from Reg local on the topic of signalling and observation, it will give you a summary of what an Examiner looks for on test.
@701Adventures
@701Adventures Жыл бұрын
@@davidraymonde6474 I hear what you are saying but if the use of Comms was consistent throughout the training and the test then this would not put the student at a disadvantage. The examiner could still provide spoken instructions via Comms to the student but keep the instructions very brief, i.e. at the next roundabout take the third exit towards Leeds, at the T junction turn left, at the crossroads turn right etc. Unless methods have changed this is what happened during my driving test and it keeps things simple and provides clarity. It is after all an assessment of a persons riding ability more so than a navigation test.
@davidraymonde6474
@davidraymonde6474 Жыл бұрын
@@701Adventures I really don't want this to become an argument but it is not and never has been a navigation test. We are helping riders to become Advanced Riders and one part of this is to increase their taking in of Information and this is available front, rear and sides. If they don't regularly check their mirrors, perform shoulder checks and lifesavers then they're not safe and safety is a significant part of being an Advanced Rider. I really suggest you have a look at this kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o55ijK2Sp9PLdac.html as it will give you a much better idea of what an Examiner is looking for.
@701Adventures
@701Adventures Жыл бұрын
@@davidraymonde6474 Who said anything about an argument, we’re simply having a discussion.You could see in these videos from Kate that she was getting stressed on occasion due to missing junctions or selecting the wrong junctions. The training shouldn’t permit this to happen and the simple solution is to use Comms. It doesn’t matter whether it is IAM or RoSpa, both organisations seem stuck in their ways and refuse to adapt as technology adapts. A case of we’ve done it this way for years and we can’t see any reason to change. I watched a few minutes of the video from the link you provided but to be honest I lost interest in what he was saying as he was droning on a bit. I’ve done IAM and I’ve done RoSpa, both try to use the model which the Police use for advanced training but they can never get anywhere close to it as the Police are permitted to do certain things which a civilian would never be permitted to do. To put this into perspective I’ve done the Police advanced course, passed first time and was graded as being in the top 3% of Police responders. I was very pleased with that achievement, as anyone would be. However when I did the IAM and RoSpa I was marked down for a number of techniques which I introduced because they weren’t recognised by either organisation but the techniques which I’m referring to were all considered essential to the Police advanced course. So, I agree that any formal training with whoever you choose is a good thing but don’t be blinkered by IAM and RoSpa, neither are particularly special. 👍
@RegLocal
@RegLocal Жыл бұрын
@@701Adventures I haven’t read all your posts as you were droning on a bit, but the reason the IAM & RoSPA don’t use comms is because the observers are not professional instructors & their insurance does not allow for instruction. Without comms, candidates are responsible for their own safety & feedback is given post ride. With comms, observers will inevitably give instructions & could be held responsible if things go badly wrong. Police & DSA instructors/examiners operate under diffrent regimes with appropriate insurance etc.

I find it very hard to try and concentrate on the ride and trying to observe on what is going on behind me, ie, observer indicators, this can be a safety issue after all we should be looking ahead for any possible hazards, on my next observed ride we will be on comms! This is a much safer way to to ride concentrating on the road ahead!!. Why don’t you go on comms??
@davidraymonde6474
@davidraymonde6474 Жыл бұрын
We don't use Comms because the Examiners don't. Anyway it's good practice to be aware of what is happening behind you as there can be hazards there as well. A quick mirror check to look for a signal should not be a distraction from forward observation.
@somersetlevellersmtb5564
@somersetlevellersmtb5564 Жыл бұрын
@@davidraymonde6474 personally I think comms should be used on these rides as they were on my D.A.S training and test. @paulbeattie4015
@paulbeattie4015 Жыл бұрын
@@somersetlevellersmtb5564 I think what is being missed here is the point at which the associate should be checking mirrors - when they notice the upcoming hazard (junction, etc) as part of normal planning and application of the System. That's the point at which the observer/examiner will give the signal to let the associate know which way to go. There is no need for additional artificial mirror checks on behalf of the associate if this is done correctly. Good observers shouldn't be asking for additional mirror checks as they should work on timing their signals to inform (and being aware their own signals could be confusing, so choosing a route that avoids those issues!). As an ex-bike instructor, I'm used to using comms and it took a while to get used to just using indicators, but now I'm much more aware of whether an associate is checking mirrors at the appropriate point!
