How to Improve Your Trumpet Sound, Part Two.
I show you the two skills you need in order to improve your trumpet sound.
Download my free play-along here: bit.ly/freeplayalong
When trying to imitate your favorite trumpeter's sound from a recording it's important that you need to balance and blend to their trumpet tone. Doing this on a daily basis awarded me with a characteristic trumpet tone early in my trumpet career.
Goal: Try to imitate how it feels to play like your favorite trumpet players with and without the recording.
I show you how with a three step process:
1) Sing it
2) Buzz it
3) Play it

Great trumpet teachings, particularly with bringing it all back to mouthpiece and using headphones with trumpet. Your playalong loops are GREAT. I did them twice just now and my lips feel ready to go. For my own practice I do a bit of Schlossberg to warm up and get centered sound (I usually pick a few Schlossberg drills from like #5 through #28). What you emphasize about playing softly is very important and that is emphasized in Schlossberg and Clark technical studies. If we only had great playalong loops for Schossberg!

CaptainQueue, it's great to hear that my videos and my play-along help you out in some way! All these years of study and I've never played out of or own the Schlossberg book. Maybe Santa Clause (my wife) will get me one. Haha! What are your thoughts on mouthpiece buzzing? How do you like to utilize mouthpiece buzzing?
@CaptainQueue
@CaptainQueue 7 жыл бұрын
Here's Schlossberg PDF on Scribd paid service so you can at least view for an idea - check out drills 5 through 28, I do a few a day. NO mouthpiece pressure, very slow, softly (mp or pp) relaxed with good sound, follow slur markings. Advanced players add 29-32, 60, 102, etc. www.scribd.com/doc/253014344/Daily-Drills-and-Technical-Studies-for-Trumpet-Max-Schlossberg-c

MP - buzz for a pure sound, softly, relaxed embouchure. Play scales where each note is in tune, not sort of close, but each note right on. I have read that pros of yesterday and today work on soft mouthpiece playing 30-60 min a day! I usually don't exceed 10 min and maybe I should start.
@TheBlackTrumpeter
@TheBlackTrumpeter 7 жыл бұрын
I definitely don't mouthpiece buzz for 30-60mins. I tried it but it doesn't work for me. I buzz short phrases to check for air flow and tension/small hiccups but that's extent of mouthpiece buzzing for me.

Bro, How long were you with an instructor or you taught yourself to play trumpet? Is self-taught trumpet possible by watching youtube? Thank you
@TheBlackTrumpeter
@TheBlackTrumpeter 5 жыл бұрын
Khanh Tran I’m gonna make it possible more than ever to be self taught on the internet. But to answer your question...I’ve pretty much always had a private teacher since 7th grade. I started in 6th. Then I went to college for music education where it’s required to study privately with the university’s trumpet instructor. I graduated in 2016 and I’ve been teaching myself. I think it’s possible to be self taught on trumpet. The difficult thing to do is sifting through a ton of info that may or may not work for you. It could be a long process when we don’t have someone to show us the a path to follow. Also, getting feedback on a regular basis is also important. With being self taught we don’t get that opportunity as much. THIS IS A GREAT QUESTION AND I HAVE TOO MUCH TO SAY ABOUT THIS TO CONTINUE. I’LL MAKE A VIDEO TO FULLY EXPLAIN MY THOUGHTS ON THIS SUBJECT.
@khanhgomsu
@khanhgomsu 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your kind response. You have a very strong background in trumpet. It's very nice that you share your knowledge and experience with everybody on youtube. Your information is very helpful to be self taught trumpet. I'm waiting for your video on the subject how to be self taught trumpet. Have a good one!
@MarioSilva-jg5nh
@MarioSilva-jg5nh 5 жыл бұрын
I believed for so long that trumpet could be self-taught and I went about things that way for years. I got good but then as a pro I took lessons again, and got so much better so much faster. The problem with being self-taught is that no matter how much information you can process, there are definite trumpet techniques and brass techniques that work differently with different people along with the underlying truths and all-around skills that everyone has to know. If those skills aren't balanced, you could have success in one category and run into major problems and not know how to fix them later on. I love your videos and in fact, I use them with my students because they can watch them over and over again and I don't have to be there to explain what they forget etc.. I'd love to team up with you and address other techniques. I wish there was a way to create a version of a systematic approach to honestly be able to be self-taught. Obviously, there are books out there that have tried to do it but it seems impossible to replace an experienced teacher that really knows the pitfalls one might experience.

Here are three things you need in order to play higher notes: 1) Faster air speed 2) Higher Tongue Arch...saying "EE" like you're saying pizza 3) Firm corners (of the embouchure)...NOT TIGHT or PINCHED. just firm enough where the lips don't blow apart when your blow faster. Try this exercise kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aJebesKVpsvSZWw.html Play only as loud or soft as you need to get the notes out. Do not over blow to get the high notes out. This doesn't teach you control. Rest as much as possible to build your endurance also. Hope this helps! :)

Is it normal that in real life, my sound is clear and full, but if recorded (iPhone SE) it sounds false and forced; kinda like beginner although I’ve been playing for 6 years. And there are many people that have told me I play very nice, others than family too, so it’s hard to believe that I actually sound that bad. Any advice?
@TheBlackTrumpeter
@TheBlackTrumpeter 6 жыл бұрын
Emma Nordrik Don’t worry 😄it’s very normal. tip play further away from your phone because it will sound distorted if the bell is too to the internal microphone. Although phones have gotta better with handling trumpet sounds, don’t expect tons of quality from a phone recording. It’s not going to sound the same as a high end mic. another tip plug in headphones with a mic attached to it. With the combo of playing further away and the headphones it improves the quality of the recording. I used this method to record audio for some of my videos 👍🏾
