FINALLY! FINALLY! FINALLY! Someone who is not afraid to start with the BASIC explanation of this technique and doesn't assume that the viewer knows all about music. Explaining WHY things work at the same time as showing makes all the difference - awesome. I don't even play guitar (I play banjo) and this concisely explains what everyone else just EXPECTS you to know about vamping. You, sir, are a brilliant teacher! Thank you.

I’ve been searching so long for a video like this, very much appreciated! Your playing at the end was insane. Can I ask, were you still playing the same scale in different positions across the fretboard while still targeting the chord tones? Would love to see a lesson on your slides, bends, double stops etc after part 3!
@andrewclarkeguitar
@andrewclarkeguitar 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! In the playing at the end I was essentially just letting my ear lead me to where I wanted to go over each chord change. So I'm not thinking, "here comes the A chord so I'm going to intentionally hit the major third". Instead, I'm just going with what my gut tells me in the moment. All of that playing is based on the method I'm teaching here and comes from the E major scale and nothing more. The reason I like to start new improvisers off with the chord tones is because it trains your ear to recognize how different notes from a scale sound over different chords in the key. I will most definitely be doing a lesson on slides, bends, double-stops, slurs, vibrato, and everything else in between in the coming weeks. :)

Would love an intermediate version. I know the diatonic/pentatonic across the neck, all shape positions, chord tones, etc. but struggle to sound anything more than amateur. I think my lick vocabulary needs work but have trouble applying the ones I learn in different contexts on the fly.
@andrewclarkeguitar
@andrewclarkeguitar 2 жыл бұрын
It sounds like you've got the framework down, so the focus should be on getting more creative. You can add color notes with non-diatonic notes and modes, but I'd suggest focusing on working with what you've got before adding anything new. I've recently released a Part 2 to this series, but I'm also working on a Part 3 that might be more your speed. :)

Why only the 2nd octave of the major scale on the higher strings and not the 1st octave on the lower strings, also? Is it because most solos are performed on the 4 higher strings?
@andrewclarkeguitar

You can absolutely go into the lower strings. The aim here is to go as simple as possible. The next step is using all the strings by extending our shape.

Goodluck with your channel. It would be nice if you could help me out with this thing. I am having a hard time figuring out how to shift in between Barre chords as the strings go numb while playing the last upstrum.
@andrewclarkeguitar
@andrewclarkeguitar 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for checking out the video! It sounds like you just need to make your transition faster. It's normal for the strings to be muted during the switch, but as you improve you speed and precision that "numbness" won't be so obvious. The key is to make sure you're still applying the right amount of pressure for the final upstrum of the chord before switching. It all will improve the more time you work at it. :)
@fenderflyer

Hi Andrew, I know this is going to sound really silly but how are there different chords within scale how does an E maj. scale have three chords in it. I am mostly following all that you say but this has been bothering me for ages. I just can't grasp it. Sorry to be a nuisance. Kind regards. Greg.
@andrewclarkeguitar

@andrewclarkeguitar
@andrewclarkeguitar Жыл бұрын
They are the root notes of each chord in the song. The chord progression is C# minor, A major, then E major. So I would play just the root note of each chord: C#, A, and E. Hope that makes sense :)

Would you say that you could learn to improvise just using the 3 note per string scale and never to worry about chord tones and caged ?
@andrewclarkeguitar
@andrewclarkeguitar 2 жыл бұрын
I mean, you definitely could. But your improvising will always sound very "scaley". Not that that's a bad thing. I'd say it'd be best to use that 3 note per string scale as a navigation tool but try not be constrained by it when improvising if you can.
