The best video I found on this subject. The don't worry too much part was amazing. The only one I found that covers both Rs, the classical one and that whipered one that appears in the end of syllabes.

French makes the facial muscles over-tensed, so try to RELAX them into Czech. Having French as a mother tongue does not help, but this makes the learning process all the more interesting and challenging. Hodně hodně štěstí!!!!!

In Spanish we have a similar sibilant R, only in some highland dialects: Rioja in Spain, the Andes highlands of Ecuador, Perú, Bolivia, Chile and Argentina. In Chile it is very strong. TRI sounds the same in Czech 3 and in Andean trípode (tripod).

Thanks for this! Interesting and helpful... Being 50% Czech, I wonder if the ability to properly speak this sound is partially genetic, based on facial bone structure and musculature, as well as exposure to it as a child... although I only know a few Czech words and phrases. I seem to have no problem with producing this sound (I'm not bragging here at all... it's just an observation and hypothesis). PS. Notice my last name.... (an English translation of the Czech original!).

Řeka! Hon Řeka? if we translated both... would you like it? And interesting theory, yet some Czech cannot pronounce ř and have to be reeducated.

I am German, so we do not trill the r. For me the czech r is much more difficult then the ř because the simultanous zh sound somewhat hides that I canot do the trill, which is immediately obvious when I pronounce the plain r. So czech people congratulate me on my pronunciation of ř but giggle when I pronounce r because I račkuju so much.

Děkuju! Funnily I've got more problems with the rolled r than with the ř. It's like I only can roll it once like "r" but not like you did "rrrrr". Is your tounge while saying this keep tipping against your upper mouth-part?

Yes, the tongue is half tipping, half vibrating as a little leaf in the autumnal wind. It should not get dry though - have a glass (of water) nearby before you start practicing.

The first method works best for me but it is still not exactly right when I say it. One word I always have a problem with is the town Břeclav. The ř followed by the B is difficult to say for me.

You could start with “Řeclav”, than B…řeclav, marking a pause between B and ř, and after a while only, Břeclav. You will get there!!! Practice makes perfect 🥳

Hahahaha (9:38) hat's rear is wrote in Brazilian Portuguese "Dřevo" (Madeira) with ř letter. See? Everything make sense.

In Russian it would be Р-Ж and in English R-Zh (Zh like in pleasure or measure).

I could not get this right. I had studied Spanish in high school and couldn't get that right either. I think it's just a physical impossibility for some people. And it's very hard to differentiate between r with a hacek and the z with a hacek, especially if it comes at the beginning of a word.

I can roll my Rs but not correctly tap them. I think I just need to practice tho.

I believe this is a subject for a pronunciation video. Žena and Řeka definitely sound different, like velvet and starched linen on a bare skin. Try to copy paste these words into a google translator and click on the megaphone repeatedly. You will hear the difference!
