Love your content, and thought I would share my experiences. I’m in zone 8b PNW I have divided and repotted in potting soil and in the fall I just store in the garage and let them dry out in the pot with soil and all. Have done it this way for years. I just bring the pot out in spring after frost date and they triple in size by may you will see all the new stalks coming up . Repeat and divide. When I divide I do check carefully before repotting up and storing-its just one less step since I store a lot of other plants the same way: elephant ears, coleus, diamond frost euphorbias , penny vines…basically all my annuals. Petunias, geraniums, and other tender sun basket plants i store in another section of garage w/ grow light and keep temperature at steady 50 degrees. To much up and down temps can kill your plants…these I only water every 2-3 weeks just to moisten the soil. It saves me money and I suppose I could go through and store my tubers,rhizomes and bulbs but I am a plant addict with to many plants and if I lose a few I’m okay with that because even storing in boxes or paper bags you will lose a few. In my 60’s and I just learn from experimenting all the time. Don’t be afraid to experiment unless its a special plant from grandmothers garden (or whom is dear to you) and you only have the one plant.

I love what you shared. It's so heartwarming to know like me you are addicted to propagation and experimenting. Most of the plants I have in my garden I have propagated and also those I dont understand I experiment until I get it right. Sending Love and keep enjoying gardening>

Great, informative video. I learned a thing or two about pruning cannas and you affirmed some things I already knew. It seems cannas do well in a variety of soil types. Yours are grown in sandy soil, while mine are grown in the clay soil of Ohio. It is so much easier to clean sandy soil from the rhizomes than the clay soil!
@redsoilgardener
@redsoilgardener Жыл бұрын
The seeds are ready when the turn black and if you touch them they fall off. It's easier to leave the seed pod to dry on the plant. Be patient and keep an eye on the seed pod as once ready the seeds could disperse.

I've had success many years storing my canna rhizomes in my cool garage. Last year I decided to put them in my basement and unknowingly sat them right beside the dehumidifier. Forgot to check on them thinking they would be fine. They absolutely desiccated and shriveled. I was so upset. Luckily I i had given some to several friends back in the Fall and they were generous enough to gift some back to me. So I'll start again this year and do a better job with them - back in my garage!

Yes by removing some of the larger leaves it gives room for the younger stems to come up. Also if the cannas foliage is too dense it can lead to Rust a fungal infection. So it is also good to have some circulation. Good luck with your Canna, once it blooms you will be excited.

So sorry about loosing your rhizomes! It is very important to dry out your rhizomes when overwintering. once you remove the foliage, leave the rhizomes out to completely dry. If they are not dry the rhizomes will suffer root rot and mold. So sorry for that! Sending lots of good wishes from Kenya.

I have been referring back to your video multiple times. I will check your other videos soon. Your canna lillies look so beautiful. My canna lillies were looking beautiful but I sprayed them with need oil, lemon and water. Next day, the green were so burnt . Now the green is freckled with yellow spots. I need to get them to look pretty again.
@redsoilgardener
@redsoilgardener 2 жыл бұрын
Careful when spraying during the day. As the neem oil and lemon could be quite aggressive with high day time temperatures. Spray evening when the temperature drops. The freckled spots could be Rust which is a fungus that attacks the Canna leaves. Its like a powdery red brown coating. If possible take a sample of the leaf to your garden centre and get them to recommend a fungicide.

I bought a pink one this year for my goldfish pond but it didn’t flower until I wised up and moved it to a sunnier location in a pot. Now it has increased its girth so I’m going to divide it before I store it for the winter. Hi sorry for late response. Had travelled to the UK. In Kenya we have temperatures during the cold season average 21 degrees Celsius. and summer 28 degrees. In the northern hemisphere, as in the US they recommend zone s that are frost free Zone 7 - 10. However, in colder temperatures, zone 6 -2 they recommend over winter storage. in that uplift the m and store the Rhizomes. We have done an episode on over winter storage. if there are any further questions please feel feel to contact me.

@@redsoilgardener I am in zone 8b Washington State. 2 years ago I left all my cannas outside, we had a mild winter and they all came back beautiful. Last year we had a hard freeze and I lost all; including the extra 30 plus divisions I had potted up in late summer. Years back I did peat moss in lawn and leaf paper bags that you get at the hardware store, I ended up moving, fell behind with so many plants....my old place I had a green house and moved hundred of plants to our new location in early spring...which doesn't have a greenhouse. Had to have our new land surveyed $4,200 (Horrified) get permits wait for the health department to approve it, which after almost 2 years we finally got that phase approved last week. The city charged $668. just to the paperwork. Hoping to start the foundation work soon. I only bring this up because my previous greenhouse was small 8ft x 10ft. and I didn't need any permits, the only cost was materials and we built ourselves, but if you go larger like I did you may need to go through a lot of hoops, hassles and fees. The one we are submitting is 13ft x 20ft. ---- due to the size is why we need the permits, health department code here has to be 14 ft from any sewer lines. Sharing this tidbit for those considering a greenhouse. love your presentation, looking forward to checking out your channel.

@redsoilgardener
@redsoilgardener Жыл бұрын
Hi, thank you for your comment with regards to my English. I come from and live in Nairobi, Kenya. Rhizomes do rot if the soil gets waterlogged. So over watering is one of the causes of root rot. To avoid this it important to have well drained soil. When mixing the soil, by using compost and river sand it will help with the drainage The ratio I use is 2:1:1 that is potting soil:riversand:compost. If the rhizome is not badly damaged, up root the plant and look for the healthy rhizome, spray the rhizome with a fungicide, just to eliminate the possibility of a fungal infection and then repot it in a well drained soil. it is

Hi Marco, thanks for following my channel. With Cannas I would use a slow releasing fertilizer 10:10;10 and use it twice to three times during the growing season. This will help with the blooming of the flowers. Also make sure that when planting your soil is a well drained soil, organically rich and moist and has aeration.

What if i live in a place that doesn't freeze or snow? Would I still need to uproot them during the winter?
@redsoilgardener
@redsoilgardener Жыл бұрын
Canna are sensitive to frost and cold. However, if you live in a place where you dont get freeze or snow, if the temperature falls below 60 degrees fahrenheit, it's best to insulate the plant, by placing mulch over the area or if in containers covering them with a protective insulating sheath.

Cannas are quite resilient when planted properly. I live in zone 8Texas and even after the brutal winter we had a couple years ago, most cannas in the neighborhood came back up from the ground. I personally grow them in pots and again they are quite resilient. I never move mine unless I’m sharing or dividing the rhizomes.

You can leave Cannas outside during winter if you live in an area that does not experience harsh winters. Seeing that its a new plant I would actually store it as seen in the video. Next season when you get more foliage and a spread of rhizomes, I would then leave some rhizomes in the soil and see how they manage.

I had Cannas for the first time last season. With everything I had going on I didn't do a proper storage. I just cut the stalks down to about inches from the dirt after they died down late November. They had several pups. I let the container sit outside for about a week and then moved them into my garage. We had a day or two in the 70's late December and they started sprouting again while in the dark and no water. They never stopped sprouting still in the dark garage with no water. I just pulled them out several weeks ago and divided them and repotted. It's looking like I will have blooms opening tomorrow March 25th. I'm in zone 8b.

Hi, if your ground never freezes then you could leave the Cannas in the ground. The problem is if the ground freezes then the rhizome gets damaged and then you lose your plant.

How do you know what colors will come from seeds.
@redsoilgardener
@redsoilgardener 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Patricia, the seed are black in colour and so it's difficult to know the colour of the flower. If you do try seed propagation its best to store the seeds of the individual containers and label them. Also note that if you have hybrid Cannas, starting Cannas from seed may not give you the same variety. In addition, when harvesting your seeds make sure that the seed pod has matured and has turned black and seeds inside are dry. You can then squeeze them out easily. The seeds are hard shelled, planting them directly into soil will not give you a success story. You would need to try to make an incision in the seed by filing down the hard shell until you see the white tissue but try not to damage the tissue. Once done soak the seeds and wait for the germination to take place. Then move them in a germination tray. Best to germinate in spring I hope this information is helpful

I have a canna that is getting ready to bloom but I noticed that the flower stamen is limp. Canna is in full sun. What is the reason why the stamen limped
@redsoilgardener
@redsoilgardener 2 жыл бұрын
Sorry for late response. What I have found is the drooping of the stamen could be result of either overwatering or not enough water. Check your soil if it drains and if the soil is moist then take a pause. Once a week watering is good for Cannas, and can increase the watering schedule if its a really hot summer. Secondly, check the foliage under the Canna. If there is too much foliage most probably the water is draining from the leaves and not getting to the roots. With a result its under watering. So try to remove some of the foliage and try to water your Canna close to the root. I hope this has helped keep me posted.

What’s best time to prune
@redsoilgardener
@redsoilgardener 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Linda thanks for asking. During the growth season I would clean up the foliage under the Cannas. In this way you allow the new shoots to find their way up. Pruning under the canna will also prevent Canna Rust as they thrive in humid conditions. And if you have too much foliage you may get an attack. So as you walk through your Canna garden keep that in mind. However, major pruning for over winter preparation. Where you cut down to the Rhizome and store.
