If all you are looking for is another 50HP (150HP total), a 3RZ swap is your best bet. It drops in fairly easily with swap mounts and a Tacoma bellhousing. And you get a healthy torque increase as well.

Man, that's awesome! These boxes made a huge improvement. I had the kickers installed before and all I could get was a lot of treble. The midrange was non-existent!! Throwing those 6.5's in the doors will probably completely change the way it sounds in your cabin. I'd love to get a small bass tube or a sub box in the future, I think that would finish off all the audio I would need! Thanks for commenting, I'd like to see how you mount the 6.5's. If you make a video of it, please let me know!

Just to touch base on this, I ended up getting those 4Runner front speaker boxes the next day and installed them with the kicker 4" speakers, and the sound is very impressive! Also got the 6.5's installed as well, but since my '94 pickup is an Xtracab, they basically just bolted right where the old rear speakers were -- in the side walls of the rear cabin area, underneath the side rear windows. I went from a single "working" speaker that was godawful rotted out to 4 new ones in nice enclosures, so needless to say, this sounds a helluva lot better! haha Oh and for anyone that's interested, I believe Walmart is no longer carrying these speakers as of this time of writing this (early December 2015), but when I went to buy my set, they had the remaining stock on clearance for super cheap (bought the 6.5's at my nearest Walmart but had to go to the second nearest location that had a couple of the 4" Kickers remaining). It was only $18 a set!

@@GarageBuiltHondas Wekk they are going in...also got the sr5 instrument cluster...I found out it was already wired for the tach and I got a sender for the oil pressure gauge. Lots of work to do...engine is at the machine shop getting rebuilt....stroker kit lc engineering stuff...

The box is small. I don't think the larger speaker will fit into that box. You might be able to mount them in there.

You can do this and it is plug and play! The challenge is the 4runner switch has the option to use the back wipers which annoys me. If you find a 1989-1994 pickup with the intermittent feature, it will come without the back wipers option, just harder to come by!

Not really, these trucks are pretty tough! You'll encounter some that probably have a lot of miles but these are known for lasting a long time if the usual care is taken of them. Just look for the normal wear and tear on the normal things, ask about maintenance and see if the previous owner has any receipts of work done or maybe a log of all the work he has performed. I keep logs of all the maintenance I do on my own personal vehicles and maybe you'll get lucky and find someone who does the same. Good luck searching!

If I have time sometime soon, I'll take a look and see how they are changed. You'll need to remove the lower dash pieces and I bet they have small bulbs which spin out.

The hvac light? I don't remember how much of the dash is really in the way of it but Take off the knobs for the levers, the face plate in front of the light, and the light spreader(clear plastic behind the cover).

They say the blue antenna wire needs to be wired to a power line. But, I’m just not sure which one.

Thanks GBH, if for some reason someone else hops on here with the same issue, I wired the blue/white wire(remote amp) from the head unit to the blue(power antenna) of the cars harness. It all works now. ✌️😆

Thanks John. Boxes arrive tomorrow. One doesn't have installed plastic wire connectors so will have to figure that but shouldn't be too hard. Figure I'll just run wire from car to speaker through box. Maybe drill a small hole if necessary?

Anything of a brand name and you'll be good. Don't get some generic speakers.

I am thinking of swapping the front bench with 2 seats and the 4Runner center console…

+Julian Tress unfortunately I don't Julian, I only really got into this truck as it was given to me 4 years ago from my dad. I don't really follow any other builds for older trucks as I'm pretty much a Honda guy at heart! I did learn a handful about these models though.
