How to Install a Boat Transducer Mounting Plate | Easy DIY

Professional boat rigger, Andy Kratochvil, performs a detailed DIY install of a common fish finder transducer mounting plate. He covers where to place the mounting plate based on hull design considerations, key supplies and tools, as well as a few other tips to ensure the job is done right.
SUPPLIES
• MOUNTING PLATE - Rig Rite Horizontal Transducer Mounting Plate: wired2.fish/TransducerPlate

• CORDLESS DRILL - #2 slotted drill tip: wired2.fish/MakitaImpactDriver
• METAL DRILL BIT - 9/64th for the featured product (read product packaging for correct size):
Transducer mounting plates allow for the quick addition and adjustment of transducers with only 2 holes drilled into the boat transom. Fewer holes mean less damage to the transom and reduced chances for leaking. Perhaps most importantly, you gain significant room and range to reposition transducers vertically and laterally to seek optimal fish finder readouts.

In general, the TI units are faster in response to inputs. This is seen when quickly switching between sonar, downscan, chart, and split screens kzfaq.infoUgkxeAxH15LxhjGlg5-CRYqjTGTEH0tbY4vk recommend The Hook units will show some lag on button pushes and screen switching. The big ticket item though is maps. If you install a mapping card such as Navionics or the free C-Map Genesis which has a lot of map detail, then moving around the map with the cursor or when running down the lake can lag significantly on the Hook units, but is seamless with the TI units.

You guys at wired2fish should do a video on boat safety and how to run a boat and tips and tricks to running new water theres been alot of boating accidents latley I dont here anyone speak on boat safety in the fishing industry

You mentioned something that has kept me confused all this time and it is the different criteria for mounting high speed skimmers and side imaging transducers. I am having trouble getting reading with the SI and DI and from a totalscan transducer from lowrance. Your opinion, should the transducer be level with the bottom of the boat or level when the boat travels at 1-5 mph where the bow travels higher than the transom. Also should the transducer be installed somewhat below, level or slightly above the bottom of the boat?

I am doing this in about two weeks for the first time. I would like to use an underwater grade silicone that will work for HDPE board more commonly called Starboard. Can’t seem to come up with the exact recommendation . What brand and type have you had the best results with in the installation that you have done or know about ? I see you’re using Sudbury Elastomeric marine Sealant.

I just purchased a lowrance HDS 9 carbon which has the 3 in 1 transducer. I currently have a lowrance hook 7 already mounted on the transom on a mounting board. Would the two transducers side by side on the same mounting board cause interference?

You want to mount in between the rivet lines. The transducer should be in front of a smooth part of the hull

my board did not come with the screws, I'm mounting on a fiberglass transom what screws would you recommend?

My transducer mount plate 12” X 3.5” x 0.75” “boat zone” that I got from Amazon didn’t come with instructions on what drill bit to use to drill into the aluminum. I’ve heard 9/64”, is that correct? I wanna make sure it’s the right size.

What’s that rubber trim piece protecting the skeg of the motor? Is that custom made ?

That's just a piece of rubber hosing still on the engine "as shipped" from Mercury. The boat hadn't been in the water yet at the time of this filming.
