Potable water lines generally use CPVC (higher max temp. They are more of an off-white color than pure white). Regular clear PVC cement isn't recommended with CPVC and you should usually use yellow/gold instead (as you can see from the old fittings).

I’m surprised Jeff made that mistake, I know he said in a prior video he doesn’t have much experience with CPVC. That is definitely the wrong glue for CPVC water supply lines.

First-time commenter here. Idk why because I love your videos. Anywho, dont go buy a can opener... just knock the sides of them glue caps with your handy anything and they'll open right up. Your shattering the dried glue, in turn making it easier to open. Plumbing fittings are slightly tapered to avoid “snow plowing” the cement out of the joint when you insert the pipe. That’s why the pipe wants to pop out at first - not from the chemical reaction. Great video of a complete install as always, thanks!!

Good tip on the hole saw kit. I've got the Crappy Tire version (Canadians will know what I mean). When it gets wedged together .... it's a bugger to get apart. I always manage to do it but sometimes I have to lock it into a vice, put a pipe wrench on it, etc. For a homeowner ... it's tolerable but it would drive a contractor nuts.

The "one fitting short" problem. Happens to everyone. Even when I buy more than I need, figuring I'll take back the extra bits after I'm done, I still fall one fitting short, one copper crimp ring short, etc. Also, I often get busy and forget to take back the extras!

Great videos mate, I'm a sparkie in Aus and the Bosch holesaws are twice as quick as that hole saw, they have spring loaded pins, simply pull back shank, spin the hole saw on and let go the pins automatically pin the hole saw from tightening on the shank and it doesn't cover the grub screw for the arbour. Try the Bosch mate, you won't regret it, I go through a kit every year and these are the only one that lasts the year.

Did my first freestanding tub install last fall, using the same drain system you show here at the beginning, and similar faucet mount. Even though i measured things up I missed the 4 inch wide lip on the tub. So the water tends to splash a bit on the edge and onto the floor. I can maybe move the faucet over 2 inches with some wrangling. For now I tried using the flexi-drain (came with the costco Ove tub) instead of the straight brass drain neck which would solve my problems .. but that makes the drain SUPER slow as it creates a bit of a 2nd P trap. Well for me the freestanding tub is just for show as I use shower instead and hot tub outside. Maybe I will move the faucet over some day so I can use the brass neck.

Jeff, how often do you come across asbestos in your renovation projects? Or do you avoid it at all cost and walk away? I’m asking because I’m looking to buy a house, but many in my market are built pre 1979. I hate seeing the potential for a great DIY renovation, but then likely facing the cost and health risks associated with asbestos.

Another great video! Thanks! What was that yellow drain thing you used? I didn't see the link. My local hardware store no longer allows returns. Nearest hardware stores that take resturns are an hour away. I just keep stuff for later. Speaking of raccoons, we had to evacuate after a hurricane and when we came back, raccoons had come in through a broken door and ransacked out house. They dragged trash from outside inside, knocked everything off the shelves in the pantry, ,knocked almost everything out of the cabinets, knocked everything off the counters, tore stuff open, stole utensils and really wrecked the place. I didn't know what had caused the mess at first but one night I walked into the kitchen to see two raccoons standing on their hind legs while my little dog barked at them. At least it was a rat coming out of the hole and not a snake. I still remember a news story about a man who got bitten on the 3 piece set by a 10ft python that somehow got into the drains and climbed up inside the toilet. And my dad had a co-worker who had a copperhead come up from the toilet while he was sitting on it. He jumped off the toilet, grabbed his gun and shot up half of his bathroom-- but the snake got away. I don't think that's CPVC for the drains. It looks like schedule 40 PVC. You can see the CPVC water supply is off-white but the PVC is white. I never would have been able to lift that tub by myself. LOL. It looks bulky. I'm glad you are centering the tub filler and leaving room to clean around the tub. Not having enough room to clean is one of my pet peeves. I've had to re-use elbows when the store was out as well.

WARNING 🫵 ... for anyone who is dealing with old installed CPVC water lines, this is the most brittle material there is! We know that Jeff is a brave man but you be careful and DO NOT shake, twist and yank (@42:46) the old supply lines like that! They will snap on you in a second. Before one starts messing at all with old CPVC, MAKE SURE to shut off the main water supply or at least to KNOW where main is located on the property. Also, the glue Jeff is using is approved for many materials including CPVC buuuuuuut, there is a glue dedicated JUST for CPVC (yellow/orange) and I strongly suggest you use that. Although this glue creates a quick bond its curing time is up to two hours (keep that in mind). As we established earlier Jeffs valor and bravery we also know you are not him! At ANY glue point of CPVC fittings/couplings when bonding, MAKE SURE to hold the fittings for 30 seconds until they adhere! Chemical reaction in glue and the shape of the fitting WILL push fittings APPART unless there is a resistance. As with any plumbing work, after you are done, main is open and water lines are pressurized MAKE SURE to inspect visually and with your hand (if possible) for potential leaks. Especially down the old REMAINING line to which you made new connections to. And yes, I am a pro and do not ask me how do I know all of this. ✌️

At the least, you should have a toolbox full of PVC fittings and a gas box for when you do gas. buy a case of 1900 boxes and couplings and box fittings.

It amazes me how many people don't glue pvc and hold it for the recommended time (even 10 seconds would be sufficient) check time stamp 22:00.... wow, usually you can see the fitting push back apart a little if not held for a few seconds, not that he would tell us if he had to redo the drain due to leaking anyway, don't follow this practice.....

I saw that. I was wondering why he didn't glue it. 🤔

That "red and yellow" is really timid with small teeth. You'd have to force yourself into its mouth to make it bite and kill you. Rattlesnake is way more dangerous.

Coral snakes are lmuch less likely to bite than a rattlesnake and can only inject a small amount of venom BUT their venom is about 20 times stronger.

24:15 mark on the install. Does another piece of pvc go into the trap and then the rubber gasket goes around it and the tailpiece from the tub drain? I don't see it shown in either video. Also. Do they sell the tub drain needed as they all differ on these free standing units? The last time I did one it had this tiny drain connected with a long vacuum cleaner type drain tube. Not standard and hard to mate to the drain. It was terrible. Thanks
