A dual battery setup is essential to anyone who wants their vehicle to run a heavy electrical load, without being left with a dead starter battery.
They’re especially common in four wheel drives that have been set up for camping or exploring the great outdoors where a fridge needs to be run.
Installation is easier than you may think and only requires a few small modifications to your car or four wheel drive.

@Davis leanby leanby there's still wires connected to positive battery terminals that could short between the battery and the yellow box. Should really be fused as close to the battery as possible IMO.

The installation of the VSR is described incorrectly. The 2 longer screws screw back into the body of the VSR and hold the base plate against the body of the VSR. You need to drill 4 holes using the VSR body as the template, NOT the baseplate.

No reason it cannot be - if you install a 2nd (dual circuit) jump relay correctly, or a split battery charge system - or even reuse an old alternator's directional diode system to direct power to both batteries - yet neither is connected to the other. The aux/2nd battery - then looks as if it's just part of the one main battery as far as the alternator is concerned - as both charge via a split charger. Cutting the aux/2nd battery off, with a key-off (power-off) relay - whenever you turn the key off, & the vehicle shuts down, simple leaves you with a main starter battery that is still connected to ALL of the so-called smart-car wiring, (while leaving you with a disconnected but perfectly charged "aux/2nd jumper battery", which is available to be jumped, if your original main starter battery goes flat). An alternator is purely a power station - generating power. A vehicle's electronics - ONLY controls how much of that "generated" power - goes into the battery, or is diverted to other wired-in circuits, depending on how your vehicle manufacturer wants them to be "fed power". MOST auto electrical workshop - and oh do this or that home auto technicians (or someone who likes DC to DC invertors (they aren't really chargers as such, just a way to take ONE DC voltage & convert it into another DC voltage even if both are the same). Charging a 2nd/aux battery off a VERY LOW DIFFERENCE DC to DC (voltage) invertor - is like saying - oh look - we have 12v output here to charge a 12v battery (THAT NEEDS MORE THN 12V to charge it) - and you will quickly find out, that you will NEVER fully charge that 2nd/aux battery.

Hey there, Thanks for your question. Unfortunately no dual battery setup we stock includes a switch to jump a flat starter battery. This is due to the cable size required to crank a vehicle, our dual battery setups are for charging a second battery, so the cable size doesn't need to be huge. but they're not large enough to start a 4x4 and it would be risking the life of the cable. You can however order a Projecta voltage relay 200amps, thicker cabling to suit cranking a vehicle to make this work. www.supercheapauto.com.au/Product/Projecta-12V-200A-Voltage-Sensitive-Relay-VSR200/SPO3956861 Alternatively, a set of beefy jumper leads between the batteries that are rated to handle the amperage required to jump start your vehicle would be a cheaper alternative to running rated relays, cables to suit this task. Or keep a compact jump starter in the glove box. We don't recommend using deep cycle batteries for starting vehicles as this may damage the battery. I hope this helps. - Ash

Regardless of what SCA is saying MANY MANY people just put jumper leads from the second battery back to the first then start it. If it's DEEP CYCLE leave it on for 5 or 10 minutes because it will be a bit hard on a deep cycle. If it's a marine, just start it straight up. They handle higher draw loads but flatten quicker than deep cycle.

@@BDHO73 Unless one uses the "same rated Jaycar kit" - which provides the buyer with 140A rated cables - hence you simply use a panel mounted momentary push button on your dashboard etc, for INTERCONNECTING both batteries together - to jump off either, in their battery charge/jumper system, which also has a VSR with a yellow (jump-it) control wire to force the VSR to close, irrespective of which battery is flattest - to allow the 2nd to jumpstart the main (if you flatten that by leaving the key on / main or sidelights on/ or the kids spend hours with the audio system playing) - thus if your main is FLAT - you simply push a dashboard button/switch and start your vehicle normally with BOTH main (flat) and 2nd/AUX (charged) - all done through the dual VSR relay itself, & it's interconnected charge/jump cables. No need to go searching for jumper leads off anyone else.

The alternator would be working over time to charge both batteries i say. I recommend attaching solar panel on roof or something and hook it to the second battery so the sun can maintain it. I don't know really, I haven't had much experience with it this

Hi, what is the emergency override button for? If I have flat primary battery, can I use the switch to start engine from secondary battery? Thanks

Hi Lukas, Thanks for your question. It's to manually override the Voltage Sensitive Relay to force charge the second battery. This cannot be used to jump the primary battery. When jumping a vehicle, the cable thickness is very important to keep note of. It'll need to be rated for the huge amperage required to start the vehicle which is normally more than the dual battery cable supplied is designed to do. A pair of jumper leads is a better option or a separate jump starter so you don't damage your deep cycle battery from jump starting. - Ash

I have a bit of experience with batteries and if you leave the jumper cables on the deep cycle for 10 minutes or so it should jump start fine. It's just hard on the deep cycle. But if it's a marine battery, fire it up STRAIGHT AWAY. Because marine batteries are built to start diesel boat engines.

Supercheap Auto your website states other about being blue to flick a switch on the unit and use the secondary battery to jump the first or you can pier a winch also

That is why I bought mine.....it said use override switch to jump start main battery if it went flat..... Wiring looks big enough!
