In this video, I show you how easy it is to install a Mr Cool DIY ductless heating and cooling mini split system. Working in a garage shop can get extremely hot and a mini split is a good solution to keep the temperatures in a safe range. It took us less than 4 hours to install the mini split system. This unit is whisper quiet, inexpensive to operate and easy to do yourself. This unit is a dual 24,000 BTU system. The mini split includes a remote control and can also be controlled using your phone with an app over wifi. In the video I also answer if a mini-split can cool a garage in extreme heat as well as if it can regulate the temperature efficiently. I just installed one in May and discovered that you will spend more time enjoying woodworking if you have a comfortable environment. After working for over 25yrs in a shop with no air conditioning and very uneven heat the mini split makes my new shop seem like paradise.

@@richardfantom8963 it has been excellent for me. I leave it on 72 year round. We didn't get a lot of very cold days, because we are in Arkansas. But it got down in the teens several times and this unit kept the garage toasty. It helps to have a small fan to circulate the air if you have taller ceilings.

Leaving the unit running even at a higher temp will cool the contents of the room. The easiest thing to cool is the air. The hardest things to cool are the items in the room and the thermal mass of the walls, floor, ceiling etc. Keep the thermal mass lower over all...the room will stay cooler (that's why it takes 48-72 hours for the room to stabilize.

I purchased the 18k unit and I’ve had it on for about a week now and you are correct about just leaving it on. It’s much more efficient. I also like it because if I go in my workshop unexpectedly it’s always comfortable. The main benefits for me is that it controls the humidity and condition of the wood/sheet goods and also it prevents rust from collecting on my cast iron work surfaces.

Just leave it on. I have mine in the workshop as well and just bump up the temp a couple degrees via the app if I am not going out there for a few days. Then change the temp before I go out there, but even if I forget it is still feels cooler in there on hot days with a higher temp setting cause the humidity has been taken out. I would also suggest adding a square d sdsa1175 or similar surge suppressor to the disconnect box. I get some close lightning strikes and not always clean power from the street and hope this device does its magic to bleed off any high voltages before smoking the minisplit 😉. Great install. I just did one for my wife for her tack room. One word of advice about the covers sets for the pipes. You need to make sure to get a Mr. Cool brand cover set. The original set recommended by Amazon and that I ordered (Pioneer, I think) did not fit the hose set- It was too narrow.

You are right, set the temp and leave it unless you're going to be away for a couple of days. Then you can start it back up with the app. And isulate the garage door if it isn't already. It will help contain the conditioned air in the shop.

Also in Arkansas and don't have a mini-split but I keep my ductless standard unit on all the time to keep the humidity down and the thermal mass of concrete, machinery, and walls at a temperature close to comfort level. It also helps preserve your tools. My HVAC expert told me that more efficient mini-splits and other units work best when kept at a consistent temperature. Insulation is definitely your friend, leaving mine on all the time added about $10-12 per month to my electric bill (levelized billing) with 12" cellulose insulation in the ceiling, 4" fiberglass bats in the walls, and steel garage doors with 1" reflective foam board insulation installed. As an HVAC/R tech I can say that in regards to AC sizing, simply getting the biggest unit available is a terrible idea. These units need to be sized correctly for the intended space. Installing a system that is too large is NOT going to work less in fact you can find the exact opposite to be true. If not sized correctly for the space you can cause some pretty serious issues as well. The two main functions of an AC system is to remove both the heat and the humidity from a conditioned space but if the unit is too large then it can pull out the heat but not the humidity which can leave you with a kind of "damp" cold environment which can lead to respiratory issues not to mention controlling the humidity in a wood shop is a great benefit that you are just not be able to really do with an over-sized unit. Second of all that system is designed in a manner that will supply the compressor with a certain amount of cooling coming back to the outdoor unit too much or too little can damage the compressor or even bring liquid refrigerant back (slugging) which will ruin it in a hurry. This thing is going to short cycle, again potentially damaging your compressor. There is a reason that these things come in different sizes and are not one size fits all, they need to be sized for the space and in all actuality you would be best off doing a heat load calculation (called a Manual J).

It is way more efficient to set it and forget it. There are a lot of objects and I imagine concrete floor mass to get cool. If you let those warm up every night you fight that every time you want to cool again. Once the concrete cools it will actually help maintain the temp. Same situation in reverse in the winter when you want to heat it.

You need to get a lineset cover for the copper lines outside. There is a brand called speedi channel that work great. You just screw to the wall and snap it together and looks great

You’d probably save money by keeping the unit set at 80 or 82 degrees or so then turn the temp down to a comfortable level a hour before going to work in the garage. The temp and I imagine the humidity in your area is a bit extreme probably putting a lot of strain on the unit to go from over 100 degrees to 77.

Yes, LOVE it! It has done fairly well on the sawdust. I have the HVAC company service it twice per year (spring and fall). They do have to clean it up quite a bit. Before I was having them service it, the drain stopped up but it wasn't sawdust that caused it, it was algae. now that I am having it serviced, they clean the drain line and drain pan each time. Best investment I ever made to my shop was the mini split!

What is your square footage? How tall is that ceiling? You didn't mention insulating ceiling so I assume you have a 2nd story above you? Did you have to do any extra sealing around the garage door? Wonder how often you need to open garage door to bring material in or more room to cut large sheets with? About how long does it take to cool down, since I assume the items in the room didn't have time to get really hot? My AC guy told me that a double head is way more efficient since it will take a lot less time to cool down and you're cooling a large area form multiple places, like the inside of the house. As you stated he recommended to get a larger unit that the sqft called for. He also cautioned to avoid the cheaper systems like the Mr Cool, since the systems that are double the price will last a lot longer and are easier to service. He's a trustworthy guy because he's a childhood friend of one of our family member. When he does have to service our AC he's so cheap you feel guilt not to tip him. Since my pockets aren't as deep as needed I'm hoping to at least get a double headed unit.

Yeah it would definitely be more efficient to keep it close to the ideal temp you want it at as it takes more energy and time to cool not just the air but the physical items in your shop.

Great job! I would say leave it on at a higher temp let's say 85F when you plan to start working in the shop, set it up to the desired temp (80F) an hour before so by the time you are in there working the AC doesn't have to work too hard from let's say 100F back to 80F. Otherwise, the unit will have to work hours and hours to cool it down from 100F to 80F. Same concept for a central unit :)

@@731Woodworks I called for an estimate to insulate my garage. He asked, "is the garage air conditioned?" I told him it isn't. He said do NOT insulate unless you have A/C in there. So you're good to go. I was looking at about $600 for Lowes R-30 rolls to DIY.

Yes. Leaving it on will actually be more efficient if you’re in the shop most days. Once you got the walls, etc cooled down, it’ll hold the temperature so much more efficiently. We have an in-law quarters that we leave the AC on all the time. Even when no one is there. No condensation that way.

This will be dependent on if the walls, ceiling and garage door are insulated. If they are, then I agree. If they are not, then you should probably set the temperature up if you are not going to be in the shop for a few days.

I would check with the manufacturer first before you add pleated filters around the unit for more filtration. It might reduce the return air back to the unit which could cause the unit to freeze up.

Use a masonary bit, drill multiple holes creating a circle, then chisel of the concrete inside the holes you drilled. The more holes you drill the better.

Wonder if that unit would cool a 3 car garage (800 sq ft.). Is that the largest unit available? Being noisey- what is the out the door price with unit, labor etc.? I have brick on my outer wall..don't think I can drill a hole THAT quick :-) Great video- thanks for the heads up that Mr./Mrs. Homeowner can do a lot of the install to cut down on the electrical labor part.

The unit itself was $2k after tax. It should easily cool/heat a 3 car garage. Most people get a 12k or 18k for a 2 car garage size.

We haven’t insulated the ceiling above yet. We plan on having that done soon. The garage door is insulted but the exterior wall is not.

I live in Alabama and I have the 18K unit installed in my 2 1/2 car garage (1/2 for golf cart bay). I don't leave it on all the time because my garage is not insulated and, of course, the garage door is opened to pull a car in and out. I didn't want the unit to have to fight against those 2 factors all the time and run my power bill up a lot. But, I've wondered if turning it on around 6pm every night is actually helping the unit, or hurting it. Is your garage insulated? I'm starting to think it may be a good idea to just leave it on Auto all the time. BTW, I also have a Laguna C-Flux 1.5 HP. It works pretty good. Although, I do have to empty the can a lot. I wish it held more. But, to save money, I don't throw away the liner that comes with the dust collector. I just dump the wood chips into a large garbage bag instead. Those thick liners that come with the dust collector are SUPER expensive to replace.

If you don't fill in that duct for the refrigerant lines would that keep daughter in laws out? I know you said if you filled it, it will keep son in laws out? Just asking.

Leave it running and get the filter box on as soon as you can... sawdust kills minisplits.... before long you'll need a storage shed for your work out equipment... glad your staying cool Matt

Has anyone had experience with one of these in cold weather (Minnesota cold) ? Been thinking about an 18000 btu one to heat and cool my man cave.

I don’t have one yet, but know many in my area who do. Living in NY, we don’t get as low cold temps and wind chill as Minnesota. The short stretches we do have, I’ve heard it struggles to keep the warmth. You’ll need an alternate source to bring up extreme cold and take the chill out. Afterwards, this can maintain it for longer durations. As for A/C, it does work well.

If you turn it off and on you have a better chance of freeze up also.. more condensation cooling really hot air... Just leave that beast on, you won't #ragret it

In the market for a table saw, I have been looking at the 10” Metabo Job site. Any suggestions? The Dewalt job site saw allows you to rip 2” more than the Metabo but is $100 more

I noticed that you never pulled a vacuum on the lines and the head. There is now air in the system that will affect your cooling.

@@731Woodworks Matt when I put mine in they said to vacuum the moisture out of the lines for about 30 min before releasing the charge to the unit, good luck love your videos

@@stevenk4920 yes it does take a vacuum pump , you can rent one or buy a cheap one at Harbor freight , but also you need a manifold gauge set, I put in a pioneer 18000 btu In a 30 by 32 pole building insulated the heck out of it , it drops my temperature here in Indiana about 10 degrees in about a hour I just love these mini splits
