The killer of laminate counter tops is moisture which can eventually infiltrate under the stainless sink lip or at the faucet hole and reach the compress board backing under the laminate. I find it good practice to run a coating of silicone around the vertical edges of the cut sink hole and the faucet hole to seal the edges against water. I also like to run a bead of silicone around the underside lip of the sink, rather than relying solely on the rubber sink gasket. The gaskets do break down over time. Keep the water out and your laminate counters can outlast expensive stone counters and the laminates are more everyday friendly with minimal care.

Another excellent instructional video! After watching quite a number of your house improvement videos, I would say you are consistently one of the best, most thorough video teachers out there. Your explanations are always clear, and you frequently get into specific potential problem issues that many videos just gloss over. I have learned a lot from you. Thanks, Shannon!

Shannon, I've watched a number of your videos over the years. NOW...I'm actually installing a SS sink in a laminate counter top for my garage...."man cave-ish". You, more than anybody else...offers actually great insights into whatever process you're describing. No just the step by step stuff like others. PRACTICAL suggestions in real world situations. Keep 'em coming...WHO KNOWS what job I'll be doing next... In most cases, I bet you've already done a video to show me HOW. Great work.

You should use plumber's putty around the sink bowl. Also around faucet base plumbers putty. This will prevent the counter from swelling with water, and future bacterial growth.

On this next step video, i like the stencil card board/tape trick as it makes it much easier not to screw up transferring the correct hole size into the counter-top for the sink. Though if a black mark on the tape wouldn't bleed thru i would enhance the pencil marks with a marker on the green tape before i cut because i tend to sometimes miss a light pencil mark.

If your sink doesn't have the foam strip around the perimeter you can check out SinkSEAL also. Very few sinks come with a sealing gasket (in the US anyway) and SinkSEAL allows you to seal the perimeter without silicone/caulk/putty. It can be found on Amazon.

Shannon, One tip that is worth mentioning is when getting a drain assembly, try to avoid any type that creates a double strainer situation. I noticed on this drain, the top piece has a strainer, but the bottom also has a few cross pieces inside, creating a double strainer. The problem is that any debris that gets through the first strainer may get t get trapped on the second one. It should not be an issue with this one too much, as the second strainer is larger than the first. I have had to replace drain assemblies whiched clogged up all the time due to the second strainer trapping debris.

I thought the template looked a little crooked too. Perhaps adding a think strip of wood behind the template at the back base would ensure that the sink is lined up straight. But, thanks for sharing. If the hole is not done properly because the wood was cut out half an inch away it allows for imperfections. There may be a need to saw off a pinch now and then. My carpenter always seems to make a slight curve at the front center line out towards the window. Maybe he does this to make sure that the sink is snug? Or, to compensate for an imperfect cut?
@sam111880

Yes and if your really good about it you shouldn't need any plumbers putty or caulking around the kitchen sink because of the rubber border strip that was under the peeled off sticker paper. Also the built in flange takes care of not needing plumbers putty on the drain of the sink as well. Metal clips hold it to the counter top as well as the sink faucet when it is installed.
