Steps I took to install a lawn pop-up drain at my home. Once installed, the drain will take rain water from the down spout on the gutter system and water our lawn when it rains.

Wow. You did a great job. Between all the digging, and the pipe work, the sawing and then the back fill, the workmanship was perfect. Just for the record, if I even dug one quarter of that hole, I would have been taken away by an ambulance. I envy men's strength.

Can you explain something to me - why always go underground? Why not instead just create a little channel (ie on-the-ground gutter) to direct the water to the same spot? It's not like there's gonna much walking on this area where he installed the drain. So it seems rather overly complicated to do an underground drain when you can just channel the water to the same spot much easier above ground.

At our house this winter the snow and ice built up on the gutters for a number of weeks, and when we finally got a few warm days and the gutters started to drain the pop up drain worked. Not sure if it's the black pipe attracting heat, being buried, or was just a factor of the temperature being right, but when the horizontal gutters started draining the piping to the pop-up drain and the pop-up drain worked also.

Gravel and fabric are common materials to use on french drains that have perforations, but the pipe here is ADS 3" solid pipe where all the water goes to the pop-up drain.

This is exactly what I need to do, but from a sump pump discharge. Currently have a 2" hose running 15 feet away, but that has caused the low spot of my back yard to flood, and erode. Will be using PVC elbows, adapters, and couplings to a 3 or 4" hose running about 12 feet downgrade from where the 2" PVC pipe exits the home and at least 10 feet away from the house. Thanks for this video. The professional ones complicate this simple process. I imagine digging the trench will be the roughest part. Have bookmarked this video.

Nice job. One thing I found I needed on mine is a hole filled with rock under my outlet elbow. I have heavy clay and the straight dirt would clog the drain hole built into the elbow. A two foot deep post hole filled with gravel under the elbow allows the water remaining in the pipe to leach back into the ground by filtering through the pea gravel. The gravel doesn't clog the drainage hole in the elbow.

They sell a corrugated pipe Drain-Sleeve or Filter Sock that you can wrap around the corrugated pipe. If you leave the pipe as-is and cover it with dirt, it may get clogged over time. You could surround them with gravel to reduced the clogging or buy the more expensive prefabricated French drain style pipes with polystyrene aggregate attached by a sleeve.

In the bottom of the elbow that holds the drain there is a small hole that will weep water into the soil gradually. Also where the elbow connects to the drain pipe is not a waterproof connection so water can drain there also. So initially, there will be water sitting in the low end of the pipe and drain until it can seep into the soil.

Is there anyway to make the connection, where the elbow connects to the drain pipe, waterproof? We have a similar system but the water from softener is also connected to this drain. Whenever softener regenerates it drains a lot of water sending through this drain but instead of coming out of the emitter, a lot of water comes out of this joint. Looking for ways to make it waterproof.

Excellent effort but couple of suggestions. Your pipe should be lower. Top of your pipe should be about 6" deep at the shallowest. This is to protect the pipe. In a flower bed you will likely bust the pipe when you plant things and in a yard you could crush the pipe if you were to drive over it (even with a garden tractor). Secondly, I would have surrounded the pipe with gravel. Should the pipe get a leak, the gravel will keep the water moving so you won't get any wet spots. I am thourghly impressed with your backfill job. Looked like you were never there.
@Iscaper
@Iscaper 11 жыл бұрын
Hi Thelma. You can do it. There is no limit on how far you can run the drain from your house. Make sure you get a slight slope in the pipe away from the house when installing. Try to install in an area where your yard does slope away from the house.

I understand this job was done 10 years ago and processes change all the time, but if you were doing this job again today would you be using some crushed rock under the pop-up so the water can drain there. I like you step by step process and explanation at each step. I have a similar situation where I have a water from a upstairs rain gutter that is routed to the front yard, but no long enough and I need to extend it another 10-15 feet and was thinking that putting up a pop-up would be a good idea. The corrugated pipe doesn't need to be laying in gravel or covered with fabric in this case because water only enters it from the end connected to the downspout. A French Drain, a pipe with holes along its entire length, takes in water, and dirt, which could plug it up UNLESS you cover it with fabric to allow the water to enter, while holding out dirt. French Drains also need to have a bed of gravel to allow the water easier flow and entry as well as a consistent pipe support.

I would guess 95% of the homes in this area use the 3" corrugated pipe for the gutter drains. What is your alternative for the corrugated pipe? The pipe will lay flat in the trench if you're careful with the bedding. I haven't had any trouble with the pop-up freezing and stopping water flow. I want the drain to pop-up and water the lawn with the rain water. Adding clay soil is the last thing I want to add around our house. We already have a clay soil that I'm trying to amend with organics.

Always use pvc put a clean out tube before it goes into ground grade the trench so the water flows to the end and drill a weep hole at the 90’s so that it doesn’t freeze and bust make sure you dig a pit at the end under pop up and fill with stone all around for drainage and to keep it from sinking.

I'm considering putting a setup like this around the perimeter of my house to prevent water from getting into the basement. I'd need to use an emitter and am wondering 1) if my pipe can lay flat or if it needs to be at a grade leading up to the emitter? 2) does anyone have experience with this solution in the winter? I'm in a colder weather climate and wonder if this would freeze and / or need to be blown out the way sprinkler pipes do? Thanks!

I put in a drain system like this yet I used a 'T' at the end so excess water could go into the ground; however, the water all goes into the ground and never rises to the level to "pop-up" the valve. I think I will replace the 'T' with a 90 degree elbow, as shown in the video.

I have 2 questions - I have one of these installed in our front yard, less than 10' from the house. Should it be farther away? Also, I remember the workers showing me the pop-up, and that there is a little hole to allow remaining water to drain into the surrounding soil. But after rain the pipe is full, and I can't for the life of me find the hole. Should I drill a new one? If there is a hole there, debris must have filled it up, and I don't see a way around that.
@Iscaper

Nice video, exactly how I've started. My question is, "What happens if it drizzles and there is not enough water or pressure to lift the cover? Will the water back up, or just sit in the flexpipe?
@kevinm8865
@kevinm8865 6 жыл бұрын
My reply is not for disCrib8, as the original question is four-years old. Instead, my response is for others with the same question (and disCrib8 if s/he still cares). If there is not enough water to lift the lid, then it will most likely (depending on how the pipe was installed) stay in the pipe. This is actually what can cause problems in certain situations (such as, if the pipe is not sloping enough downhill, if debris is inside the pipe, the pipe is crushed or destroyed, or during extreme weather). Anyhow, if there are perforations in the pipe (holes, slits, etc.), then water can escape the pipe and enter the rock, soil, or native ground. However, you can cut slits/holes in the elbow-fitting to allow water to drain out when there is not enough water to fill the fitting and run out the emitter. I did this yesterday; I used a sanitary-wye fitting at the end of my run and used an angle-grinder to cut a slit near the bottom of the fitting for drainage. I also have slits along the pipe-run so water can drain out AND enter the pipe.

Doesn't water get trapped inside the pipe? I mean, water is going to push out as long as there is pressure coming down, but as soon as the rain stops some water is going to stay inside the pipe, right?
@Iscaper
@Iscaper 6 жыл бұрын
You put slope in the pipe away from the rain gutter and house that would keep water from staying in the pipe. There's a small hole in the bottom of the elbow that would drain the remaining water.

Stupid question but I have to ask, do they make 2 inch pop-up emitters?
@worthashot
@worthashot 5 жыл бұрын
I would connect the solid pipe to about a six foot perforated pipe just before the pop up and lay that in clear stone. That way water doesn't stay in the pipe. When you have a rain day with only an inch or two of rain it's not enough water pressure for the pop up to do its job. Rain water will seep into the ground in the last six feet of perf pipe. When you have really heavy rain days then rain will flow through the pop up and any left over water will seep through the ground naturally.
@ronaldtodd8779
@ronaldtodd8779 5 жыл бұрын
I am thinking of the same thing, except I would want the weep holes near the popup. I want to be able to put my shop-vac hose in there and suck up debris every year or so. In my case, I fear that putting weep holes 6 feet away from the clean out might make it hard to clean some debris, especially stray roots. I would drill 3-4 leech holes at the bottom, near the pop-up, and a couple of bags of gravel surrounded by mesh fabric similar to that used in leach fields . I think that would work well

I once tried removing the pop up drain, there was some water in there but not quite all the way up to the ground level... Hello, I recently bought a house built in the 80's and its basically built on the bottom of a slope so we catch run off from my neighbor and the main road; majority of those run offs go thru a swale which i'll explain soon however, the previous owner may have installed a "french drain" along the foundation of the house possibly connected to two rain gutters. I'll go ahead and shovel around tomorrow. But During heavy rain, the channel drain fills over the top, water comes up almost touching the bottom of my front door...and it looks like it may flood the house one day. It drains eventually but the heavy rain floods my driveway which leads to the front door. the swale on the property is about 16 feet away from the house which appears to flow well and right into a storm drain. I'd have to figure out, obviously, if there would be enough fall from the house to the swale to figure out where to install a drain pipe to daylight the water there right? I mean just eyeballing it , id say the bottom of the swale may be level or even higher than the bottom of the exterior walls of the house. How would you drain it out? I was thinking short term solution is to buy a pump. Thank you in advance.
@Iscaper
@Iscaper 7 жыл бұрын
I agree with your thinking, heavy rain could overwhelm a french drain so it might be better long term to install a sump pump. Another option might be to create a shallow ditch maybe lined with concrete that could catch the rain water and be daylighted out past the house.

Ads pipe sucks...a riding lawnmower will put a belly in that pipe after a while. I dont know why you'd want any cuts in the pipe when your trying to pull the water from the house any how

M Pajewski corrugated pipe is only good if you're trying to pull from a water table. Then you use outlet pipe to discharge into a creek or ditch whatever's clever.

Couple of things; you want to use a pvc pipe because flex pipe has ridges in it that dirt and debris can collect, PVC does not. Also, you want an air gap between your gutter and your drainage system so that if the pipe ever clogs, you are not overflowing your gutters.

That particular flex pipe is also very prone to pinhole leaks. I'd avoid it altogether.

Artic is spot on. White vinyl sewer pipe is not much more expensive and works infinitely better. Also, I bet this drainage does not work well because the pipe has very little drop. It will work, but the water has to fill the pipe (and possibly up into the downspout) to the height of the cap on the pop-up. That impedes flow. Plus, if pine needles, leaves, a pine cone, twigs, etc. come down from the gutter, they tend to get stuck in the elbow and cap. I personally would never use these caps unless absolutely necessary. Finally, if you install it then hate it and want to remove it, the pipe is now a few inches underground and you'll have to deal with that.

Iam doing a French system along the side of my detached garage. I live I'm the city and my parents live in garage so water is been getting in there. I was gonna have the corrugated pipe run all the way to street from garage for water to exit but garage kinnda far from where garage is. So my question is if I use one of those emmiter pop up elbows somewhere down the pipe for water to exit, will I need to slope the corrugated pipe down to emmiter elbow so water can escape there if pipe gets filled up with water or emmiter pop up will work regardless of pipe slope?
@Iscaper
@Iscaper 3 жыл бұрын
I would use the pipe with slits to pick up the water. Use rock around the pipe so water can enter the slits. Pipe needs slope away from the garage to carry the water away.

People have told me that there needs to be a slope in the ditch so that water will run off - I do not see it in your work. Also another tip given to me was; the bed of the ditch should be lined with C6 gravel before putting the drain on it. This will keep it firm and preserve the slope.
@Iscaper
@Iscaper 8 жыл бұрын
Anil Philip I had more than an inch per foot of slope in the trench. Adding gravel to the bottom of the trench is an extra step and expense, but can be done if you want it.

The water exits because of slope in the pipe, there's not a lot of pressure.

Very nice video. Two questions: 1). how deep should I dig if the solid pipe is 3"? Could you give me a general idea? I guess at least 3" of soil to cover the pipe, so is 6" enough? 2).Can I connect to my sump pump pipe? if so, is there anything need to be watch out? Thank you in advance, iScaper1!
@Iscaper
@Iscaper 10 жыл бұрын
1. 3"-6" cover on the pipe sounds about right. You want the top of the pop-up drain flush with the surface of the ground, and you want the pipe sloping away from the house into the drain. 2. I wouldn't connect the rain gutter and a sump pump to the same pipe as this would make the sump pump the lowest point. Might have a siphoning problem. Sump pump to the drain pipe alone would probably be okay.

I just use a simple 4" round grate and put a couple screws through it to hold it on the outlet pipe. Makes it easy to take off and clean as needed. The grate keeps mice or other critters from nesting in the pipe. I used thin wall pvc pipe vs the black flexible pipe.

@Iscaper
@Iscaper 8 жыл бұрын
+Denise Taylor It looks like the EZ-Drain pipe is slotted with a protective wrap and is used for french drains. Are you sure you want to use this type of pipe just to connect to a rain gutter downspout? If you're doing a drain for the rain gutter then 3" or 4" solid wall pipe would probably be better and much cheaper. Here's a link to a typical downspout adapter that goes from a downspout to 3" drain pipe: www.homedepot.com/p/3-in-Polyethylene-Corrugated-to-Downspout-Barb-x-Female-Adapter-0364AA/100122011?cm_mmc=Shopping|THD|G|0|G-BASE-PLA-D26P-Plumbing|&gclid=CPGwxPutncwCFZOCfgodP9oJgw&gclsrc=aw.ds Here's a link to solid 3" drain pipe: www.homedepot.com/p/Advanced-Drainage-Systems-3-in-x-10-ft-Corex-Drain-Pipe-Solid-03540010/202522641

I am running 4" PVC pipe 15ft long for pop up drain. Slope should be 1/4" every 5 ft? PVC/w/coupling will tie into my rain drain that is cemented in running through the middle of my patio extension. I am worried about the water sitting in the pipe any feedback would be appreciated thanks.

i`m wondering how the water drains in the winter,when this pipe lays full of frozen water ?
@RueKoegel
@RueKoegel 5 жыл бұрын
Frost depths vary by location. It'd be better to bury drainage lines deeper where it's colder, but in, say, Florida, anything below 1" is gonna be warm enough most days. In either case, the water will likely freeze at the surface points--at the downspout and popup, making the system dysfunctional in the winter. But burying the main length of pipe deeper can still protect it from all sorts of harm. Most manufacturers have a 4" below grade minimum, but deeper is better. Some areas have building codes that require installers to follow manufacturer minimums or better for drainage systems. I would've gone 'under' the sprinkler line.

It would have been a bit helpful, had you indicated the degree of slope of the tubing, all the way into the emitter, and how deep did you bury the tubing. Appears to be only about 6 to 8" maybe? An employee at Lowe's told me to be at least 12 inches, if you will be running a riding mower over the line. The directions of the slope are on the instructions, but in case, the user is without instructions....This was helpful, however, as I start my 30' of tubing within the hour.
@RueKoegel
@RueKoegel 5 жыл бұрын
Slope is only really needed in curtain conditions. If the top opening is higher than the lower opening , the water will escape out the lower opening. Try this as an experiment with a bendy straw, if you don't believe me. However if you don't want water, or sediment, pooling in the middle, especially around joints, there should be 'some' slope toward the end. But the very end will obviouse still have to slope back up to the surface.... many have suggested adding leaching sections to the pipe near, or after, the pop-up--so remaining water can escape too. I wouldn't trust a pop-up as the only escape point. If it gets plugged, a heavy flow would lead to water overflowing at the downspout.
