Downspouts that drain into flowerbeds or other areas around the yard can cause damage and other unsightly issues. One way to avoid that is to install a Pop-up Drain Emitter. It's an easy weekend job that will divert water away from your home and keep your flowerbeds free of water erosion.

Iam doing a French system along the side of my detached garage. I live I'm the city and my parents live in garage so water is been getting in there. I was gonna have the corrugated pipe run all the way to street from garage for water to exit but garage kinnda far from where garage is. So my question is if I use one of those emmiter pop up elbows somewhere down the pipe for water to exit, will I need to slope the corrugated pipe down to emmiter elbow so water can escape there if pipe gets filled up with water or emmiter pop up will work regardless of pipe slope?

I'd put sod over the stone, not dirt if I was forced to use an end drain like that. Sod has dirt held together by the roots. Dirt will wash into the stone. Popups should be used as the absolute last resource. Open discharge is best.

Great video! I just had an irrigation company do this for me, but noticed a couple of the pop up emitters are at least 2 inches below grade. Will this cause any problems?
@choreschow
@choreschow 2 жыл бұрын
The actual emitter should be just at the surface of the soil. The main concern for an emitter 2 inches below grade would be debris collecting on top of the pop-up, therefore preventing flow. Over time the sides around the emitter could collapse in also preventing proper flow.

So it should all be level? I have a problem with the driveway sloping down toward the garage but to the left emptying into the grass. I thought of putting in a catch basin and having an emitter down a ways and emptying onto the lawn in the backyard.

there is a reason plumbers fail flexible plastic pipe for your sink and recommend hard pipe instead. with all the work you do to set up the drain, why not use solid plastic pipe? without corrugations no silt build up would occur, water flow would be improved and the flimsy flexible pipe would be replaced by something that would last longer
@scrapplepig
@scrapplepig 3 жыл бұрын
I agree, plus the black flexible pipe look like crap and won't hold up. White pipe with a downspout adapter that would be above ground connecting to the downspout would look so much better.

Thanks for the video. It was very informative. I have a question , today in my lawn i observed when i ever i switched on the sprinkler system this NDS pipe pops-up and water is flowing. And after switching off the sprinkler system the water still flows for sometime from the pop-up emitter and then stops. Can you please tell me why it's happening this way. Appreciate your help on this.
@choreschow
@choreschow 3 жыл бұрын
If you are running a solid pipe from the downspout to the pop-up emitter, the sprinkler shouldn't have any affect on how it functions. Unless, somehow, the sprinkler is providing water access into the drainage pipe, which seems unlikely. Are you sure you're not looking at an actual sprinkler head?

that black piping has been used for decades for drainage. It doesn't collapse unless you drive a BIG HEAVY truck across it. It is not garbage, but is an industry standard for underground drainage. not for building plumbing.

@@zacksgaragedoorserviceandr1208 The black insert at the gutter looks big but inside that bigger end is a smaller opening that fits right over the downspout, so its the right size. If you watch the video closer you can tell its fitting over it tight as he goes inside of it. The reason i know this is I just bought something simular and it fits the same way, The reason mine is like this is it has 2 plastic clips that fold up to secure it to the downspout using a rivet gun or gutter screws.

@choreschow
@choreschow 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply Pat! I address that at 2:03 in the video. Since the piping should be installed at a slope, any excess water should flow down to the drain on the pop-up emitter. That water then filters through the pea stone underneath. So, you shouldn't have any issues with freezing.

System is working great! There were some comments about the type piping used as being problematic and/or in could collapse. That's not the case. First off, the downspouts are fitted with guards to prevent debris from clogging up the drain. Second, you'll note that I buried the piping at least a foot below ground to prevent movement/compression from the riding mower going over the area. It's also not highly trafficked. Thanks for the comment!

@choreschow
@choreschow Жыл бұрын
Assume the grade is at a slight decline so the water runs downhill from the emitter? If so, there shouldn't be any pooling water around the emitter/ground. Now, if you've had a lot of rain recently, yes that area could be saturated. However, that would eventually dry out once the rain stops.

Well if you did it the way he did it exactly with the big huge hole in the ground it will have to take a long time for the hole to fill up and for the pipe to fill out before it actually feels up and then it pops up but If your pipe is not installed correctly then the drain will not work or the pipe might be collapsed so you have to make sure everything is running correctly in the pipe he used I highly do not recommend using that stuff collapse really easily and I just don’t recommend using it at least underground
@choreschow
@choreschow 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Raymond, there are a couple of things that could cause the issue. First, what type of piping did you use? In the video we used solid piping. If you used corrugated perforated pipe, it will release some water as it travels down the pipe. The hole with the peat stone could also hold some water with light rain, but the small drain at the bottom of the emitter won't drain most water during harder rains. It's also possible that debris from your roof has clogged your system, but if the emitter hasn't worked since you installed it, that's unlikely the problem. Basically, the water is traveling from your downspouts to an underground piping so unless there is an obstruction or something altering the waters path, the emitter should work as the water has to be forced out somewhere.

It depends upon the size of the drain line, but 3-4 inch line has a 2X4 of water draining into it...you will not see much, unless you are watching it during a rain, and then maybe a trickle. If you are trying to check it with a garden hose...wasting time...the buildup of water does not produce a very dramatic drain through the pop up. If you have a catch basin, the basin will fill and then overflow, if pop up is not working or cannot handle the flow (that's why it is important to install the catch basin in a place that will allow effective drainage). Stick a firehose in it, you'll see something. It's just a matter of physics, depending upon the elevation drop from origin to destination of drain pipe (and it should be an elevation drop). For the most-part, if you see it pop up and drain water, you have a major problem!

You're supposed to cover the pipe in landscape fabric and drainage gravel, otherwise the dirt turns to mud which will clog the pipe.
