And don't forget, make sure that the board you put on top of the post does not go all the way to the front of the box. Make sure that board is short enough to allow the door to open fully without the bottom of the door stopping on the board.

If you live in snow country like I do, instead of screwing the mail box to the mounting plate, use two wrap around bungie cords. Then when 2 tons of wet snow come flying off the county snow plow as the drivers want to set speed records to get the job done, the box will rotate or give way without breaking into a dozen pieces. You simply rotate it upright again, or pick it up out of the snow drift and reattach it. Saves buying a new mailbox (or two or three) every winter. Ask me how I know.

Thanks Dustin. Does the mailbox come with the holes that line up with the holes on the mounting bracket? Are these standardized or do I have to buy Gibraltar for both? Also what kind of screws did you use to fasten the mounting bracket to the post?

I like simple. I'd just be a bit worried about the snowplow knocking it over, since the post will need to be closer to the street w/ the mailbox directly on top of the post.

I posted this above before I read your comment. Here is what I wrote:If you live in snow country like I do, instead of screwing the mail box to the mounting plate, use two wrap around bungie cords. Ask me how I know.As far as the post goes, I put a platform on mine and attached the back of the box to the post. This way the post sits farther back from the road.

I am surprised you (seemingly) placed the wood post directly in contact with the soil at the bottom of the hole. Why not place some rocks at the bottom? Also was surprised that you did not suggest using a quick setting concrete such as Quikrete. You kept saying "concrete". And to simply assume that enough water would be available from the surrounding soil for regular concrete to work properly was a bit much. Would it not have been as good idea to tell folks to wait until the concrete hardened prior to installing the mounting plate and box?

hey TT..the grounds got a lot of moisture friend...call backs on posts not setting aren't very common.. as far as the wood to soil...some put rocks in...i don't.after all, its just a mailbox...thanks for commenting!

Why bother with concrete? When a car hits it, it's going to break either way...
@DrHogfan
@DrHogfan 7 жыл бұрын
over time boxes that aren't concreted tend to lean toward the street. Then they open up and mail ends up in the street.

@willhorting5317

And the reason so many mailbox posts, that aren't concreted in, begin to lean, is because so many people only install the posts 16" to 24"......If you are going to begin with an 8' 4x4 like the one this guy used, it makes sense to dig deeper, and put the post 36" to 48" in the ground. Then if you don't use concrete, but instead do a good job of packing the dirt, as you put the dirt back in the hole, the post will remain straight for the life of the post. Just like a fence post! Duh!

lol hey will! anyone who digs a mailbox post 4 ft in the ground needs to get some hobbies...much easier to pop a bag of concrete around it. and be done
