In this video I will show you how to install a pool pump, specifically the plumbing of the pump. In part one I walk you through the wiring of the pool pump. To see that video: • How To Wire a Pool Pum...
This is a very difficult set up area as it is a small equipment pad and the area back there is nothing but dirt. A messy area to work in for sure. Plus the plumbing was done in such an unnecessary tight fashion. There was no need to put the equipment in such a tight fashion with such a large area back there - but "it is what it is."
So I was left with not much space at all unless I wanted to re-plumb the entire area and put in a new Jandy valve and backwash valve.
Here are the parts I used in this video in order as they appear:
2" Male Adapter for front of the pump - note it fits over a 2" PVC pipe
1.5" Fitting Adapter - this fits over an existing elbow or coupling
2" Self Align Slip Union - essential in getting this pump on
2" X 12" Nipple SCH80 Pipe - This resists heat - high melt temperatures
For the threaded parts I used Plasto Joint Stick but you can use Teflon Tape.
I like the Pool Heavy PVC Cement because it gives you more time to adjust the fittings which comes in handy in a tight spot like this here.
Any primer will do - it basically gets the pipe ready for the Cement
Recap:
There is really no way in this type of tight area to jam two opposite ends on PVC pipe up to connect the pump so a Union was needed on at least one part of the piping. I would like to have put one in front also but the installer left me zero room to do so. So with one union it was still pretty difficult to squeeze the pump in - as you can see from the video.
In a real world installation you will find that most of the pool equipment installed is in a tight configuration like in this video. Especially a lot of the older equipment installs. The one foot manufacturer rule for a straight pipe from the elbow in the intake of the pump is not really followed by most original installers so I have to live with it.

I wanted to thank you for a great video. I'm almost 70 and just installed / replaced my old 1 hp challenger. The union process you showed me saved my rear end!! I did the coupler on the front of the pump and the union on top. Worked perfectly, no leaks. Thanks again! Much appreciated!!!

God love you for this. I don’t have a handy man around to do work like this around my home but I am able to take care of most things with very clear and directive videos like this one. Thank you for sharing your knowledge so I can save some money and do the work myself. It looks good and is a quality repair thanks to your instruction and I must say it feels good too knowing I could do it myself.

Most every pump installation manual calls fora minimum of 10” straight pipe on inlet side to minimize turbulent flow and cavitation. Pump will run with less strain and cooler temp thereby extending its life

Super rare to see 10" of straight pipe in front in any CA install. The equipment pads are so tight.

What made this a great instal is that it had to be done on such an old system, real world installation. One piece of advise, if the motor is stressing that union just shim it to relieve and pull the weight of the motor is putting on the piping. Great job considering what he had to work with.

Hi David, two questions today. Is it possible for my Inteliflo 3hp VS pump to transition smoothly from one speed to another or does there have to be a one minute gap, 1900-2700 for example. The second question is, is it possibly to remove phosphates easily. With the poolrx I wasn’t too concerned about them but I think even the poolrx is reaching its limit. 1300 phosphates as always thanks for all you do.

Awesome video. Thank you for making it. I have a few questions, and any suggestions would be appreciated. I'm disabled. I'm trying to do this via wheelchair, and am determined to do this myself, lol the swim season may be over by the time it gets done, but hopefully it will get done, and done somewhat correctly. I've just now starting my hard plumb using Sch 40 PVC on my above ground pool. I'm planning to run the lines from the skimmer/return to ground level for added support, and to, hopefully, increase the distance a little further between the pool and the pump. (I actually dry ran it originally with it just coming down from the skimmer, a short piece of PVC, the Ball Valve-cut off, another small piece of PVC, a 90 placed across from the pump, a short piece of PVC, the Union, a small piece of PVC, and the threaded/slip connector into the pump, but by the time everything was added in it just looked way too heavy to just be hanging there in the air, and having no support, so I decided to start over, and run it all the way to the ground, across, back up, and into the pump). I've done a little on it already, but with my physical limitations I'm only able to handle doing a little bit each day, plus with all the rain, rain, and lol more *&%$ rain, I've not gotten much done. (So far I've only put in the new thread/slip connection in the bottom of the skimmer, added a short piece of PVC, put in the 1st Slip Ball Valve below that, ran the PVC line to the ground, and put a 90 at ground level to start going across with). Here's a lot of my problem. I have very limited space between the pool and the pump, they are currently approximately only about 3 foot away from each other, (but I do plan to leave enough pipe available in the line to cut it and bury it next season, and move the pump to a different location about 5-6 more feet away from the pool. (The pump has been in this same location for about 5 years now while using just the regular hoses, and has done fine, I'm hoping the hard plumbing doesn't cause it to have flow issues by being so close.) Do you think this will cause a flow issue in regards to the PVC pipe, and the close location to each other? I'm placing Ball Valve-cut offs on the skimmer and return sides, and will also be T-ing a line off the return to make a DIY fountain with its own cut off. I also have Unions that I'll be using for easy disconnect. Where in the line should that Union be placed? Should it be closer to the pump, closer to the skimmer/return, or does it really matter? Do they do better if placed up and down, instead of laying across the ground part? Do Unions require any type of Teflon tape or sealer, or are they self sealing? At the pump, and at the return a threaded 90 would work better there and take up less space from having to add another connector in. Is there any issues with using a threaded 90 in those areas, or should a straight connector be used to prevent any additional possible pump flow issues, and then the 90 glued in after that? Also is it better to use (2)45s instead of a single 90? Also the clear line on the pump that has the metal in it (I think it's spa tubing possibly or something like that but I'm not sure). Is it alright to replace that clear tube with PVC as well or should the flexible clear tubing be left alone when hard plumbing the system? Ok Last question, lol I bet you're thinking thank goodness, it's about time lol: What type of white paint was used in the video to paint the pipe with, was it just regular white spray paint, or is there one specific for PVC pipe? LOL after just gluing together a couple of parts so far I can already tell it is definitely going to be needed? Sorry this ended up being so long. Thank you for any suggestions you can offer. Have a wonderful Night!!!

Hello. Thanks for your videos! I disagree with the below post that "you are using too much glue". Nothing like cutting back on the glue and fitting it all up, only to discover a drip or leak and have to start all over again! I have two in-gound pools in two homes and your videos are extremely helpful, even though I am an Engineer. Questions: I am installing a new Pentair Multi Speed and feel I should install a check valve in line while the system is down and all tools are available. I believe I have two issues, which may require two check valves. (1.) Should there be a check valve on the pipe the pump suction prior to the pump to prevent water from retreating to the pool, now causing the pump to take 30-60 seconds to prime on each start up? (2.) Should there be a check valve on the pipe prior to entering the Pentair tablet chlorinator to perevent high chlorine content H20 from backing up into the equipment? (3.) Unrelated to the above, I installed a Pentair Chlorinator 320 and found that the tablets are not being consumed, causing me to manually add chlorine to the pool. My theory is that the supply line PSI feeding the 320 is very close to the PSI of the pipe the chlorine should be exiting to, thus causing it to remain static. I added a tablet, filled container with water then capped it and tablet remains whole after 2 days. Any suggestions? (4). Lastly, this same pool has a raised spa with a waterfall into the pool. When the pump shuts down, several hours later the spa water seeks the level of the pool. Would a check valve above #2 remedy this issue? Thanks for any assistance you may offer. Jack C
@SPL
@SPL 8 жыл бұрын
If the spa is elevated above the pool water line there should be a bypass check valve installed to prevent water draining back into pool. Generally the check valve for the spa goes on the pipe where the bypass is - usually an elevated spa has water running to it even when pool is in "pool mode." Would have to see you equipment layout to further advise. Check the bottom screen in the 320 to make sure it is not clogged up. Use a pair a tongs to remove it and inspect it. And yes, a check valve in front of the pumpcomes in handy for what you described. And they sell a specific check valve for the 320 chlorinator with no metal in it: Rainbow R172288 Corrosion Resistant 1.5 x 2 inch Chlorinator Check Valve

Are you using regular schedule 40? Also if my pump is 1 1/2 HP can I use schedule 40 under ground. I'm repiping the pool I'm unsure of what type of pipe would be best and. I'm worried about using 90's because of flow restrictions. I would use 45's but I don't want a lot of joints under ground. I could use a sweep as well but I want to really manage the flow. Right now there is black poly pipe with hose clamps keeping it together.

I had a couple of questions on that joint stick ... I recently tried to plumb my above ground pool filter between my new pump and old cartridge filter. Right at the spot where the threaded pipe screws into the the outlet is where my leak is ... I used teflon tape on the threads ... is that joint lock stuff better than teflon tape? Does it glue the fitting in? Should I be using an 0-ring? Thanks for any help. Jeff
@SPL
@SPL 10 жыл бұрын
Teflon tape is comparable to the joint stick - pool guys will use both. The joint stick never really dries so it doesn't glue the pipe to the fitting at all. Nothing goes between the threaded fitting and the pipe - so no O-ring.

Is it wise to buy a 2 speed motor to replace the one speed motor for energy saving when I just want to circulate my chemicals in the water???? BTW. I also have a return separately valved for my polaris pressure side cleaner that i run as needed . In this 15000 gallon pool with a 10 person spa.

It is between the heater outlet and the return. No check valve between the pump inlet and the pool. Do I need a Check Valve? If so where? I also see a few places where there are elevated loops to prevent siphoning I guess. One is between the Pump outlet and the multivalve. The other is between the heater outlet and the return. That is also where the check valve was. Do I need to redo that heater outlet one when I remove the heater?

Ivan Bunch Frogs re not a good sign... usually when you have organic life swimming in the pool it takes a boatload of chemicals. When I get to a pool and see swamp life, I generally bring the chlorine level up as high as possible. The green algae and organic life will sap away a lot of the chlorine as it is being used up fast. For 22,000 gallons I would dump in about 8 bottles of liquid chlorine and that will raise it up to 50 ppm - about 5 times the shock level of 10 ppm. That should be a good start. Got that number from: Thepoolcalculator.com. Follow the procedure here and it should turn around in a week: Green Pool Part 1 of 2, How to Clean: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/r8p5rNZzrq7Mh6M.html

Sears sells it - Krylon H2O Latex Spray paint. I use a light tan that looks almost white - covers a little better with one coat.

I was surprised not to see the pump being bolted to some concrete. Is it OK just to let the pump sit on a surface unattached? Thanks!

Generally, no one bolts them down to a cement slab. Not unusual.

@@SPL thanks a lot for the quick reply. Does the motor just sit supported by the inlet and outlet pipes? I thought there was enough torque and vibrations to warrant a former fitment. So I can just place a replacement pump on some concrete pavers? Makes my life easier 😁 Thanks again!

Agreed, I've replaced more pumps than you can shake a stick at and only mounted 1 by customer request. And the pump is supported by the base and stays on ground due to gravity. 😎

If there is that much vibration I'd take a look at restrictions in return plumbing ie dirty filter, clogged heater core, clogged solar lines.

I would have re configured to use a union at the inlet as well. Pain in the A they way you did it if you need to ever service the pump.

Swimming Pool Tips, Reviews & How To -MrDgvb1 Thank you for your reply. I watched about 10 videos and still couldnt find anyone explaining. I found my dad's old one yesterday that had been thrown in scrap metal pile. My father passed away in 2001 and I remember seeing something like a old pump off one of his ponds. We have just got a pool for the kids this summer, So I went on the scrounge and you wouldn't believe it! I plugged it in & it fired straight up, working perfect!! Saved about £500!! God bless mi old man😉. Thanks once again. Happy days👊

Wouldn’t it be easier to just replace the whole pipe from the pump outlet to filter with a union to the filter?

Would have to replace that jandy valve and cut the pipe down to the dirt. Not easier but it would make replacing the pump easier in the future.

Thank god it not just me. That looks like a home brew abortion with so much addition to the total Head just in the short part that was fixed. Also you may have noticed that the pump was actually hanging in mid-air from the out flow pipe. That won’t last long. I do not even want to tackle that remark about restriction issues not being important till 3” pipe???????

Great video! I can tell you there are two others method you can use instead of a union. One method is cut at the top and add a elbow. Second method is you can use 2 inch pvc slip and burr out the inside center and pull it up after you gave apply the glue on both end. 😉

That final connection is always the worst. No slack whatsoever to make up for measurement/cutting errors or, worse, failure to fully seat the pipe into the socket.
