In this video I show you how to connect the wires in a 230 Volt pool pump. It is pretty easy. There are just three wires to connect and that is it. I walk you though the process of disconnecting the old pool motor wires and connecting the new pump wires.
For part two of this video covering the plumbing of the pump:
• How To Install a Pool ...
This is part one of a two part video on installing a Pentair Wisperflow pump. The existing pump here is warped due to overheating a three years ago when the old motor burned out. It was going on it's third diffuser so it was time to swap it out.
If you are hooking up a 115 V motor you will also have three wires. One will be the black load or "hot" wire, one white Neutral wire and one green ground wire. When you open the back of your motor up you will see these three wires labeled clearly for you.

As others have said, this is a dual voltage motor. Just put hot wire to L1 and neutral to L2 then turn black selector knob to 115v.

Thank you! Very helpful. I bought this model after my old 11 year old pump died. I was confused about the writing as my old pumps wires were attached to terminals "A" and "B" and this new pumps terminals "L1" and "L2". But you cleared that up. Also I made sure to turn the switch from 230V to 115V as that's my power source.

With all due respect. That motor tag says 208/230 and 115 volt application. Then under your left forefinger after you open motor lead cap there is a selector switch to chose 230/208 or 115. They should come factory set to 208/230 but it is always good to check.

Note that this motor is actually a dual voltage motor. The name plate states the voltage rating of 208-230/115 as well as the "acceptable for field wiring". Also inside the wiring housing there is a voltage selector switch from 230v to 115v. L1 and L2 will still be used but I'm not 100% sure if polarity is an issue with this particular motor. It would be great if you would do another video demonstrating the conversion from 230v to 115v for those who have 115v at the pump area, noting that the amperage will double so wire size is extremely important. Thanks for the great video!

The recommended way to attach wires to screw terminals is to wrap the wire in the direction of the tightening screw, I.e. Clockwise. You wrapped the ground wire the opposite way. A small thing but important.

Great video thanks for the info! So essentially the two load wires are going to just 2 110V breakers so that's how you get 220? 2 x 110??

Yes. If you look at the 220 timer it is split in half. One line and one load wire on each half in the time clock. The 220 breaker is also the same configuration but connected together to control the 220 volt timer and thus the 220 motor.

There should only be one circuit breaker but if there’s a switch at the pool pump you should definitely kill it at the breaker in the panel but never assume your wires are dead unless you use a multimeter to verify there’s no power there before doing work.

If it is a 3phase motor or 240V single phase motor , then you won't need the neutral. Also romex really shouldn't be used. Lfmc is definitely a better option. If you insist on romex & there is no inspection being performed, then you can either cut off the neutral at both ends or use dielectric wire nuts to cap off at both ends. I would also throw tape around the wire nut & wire.

Always & I mean Always disconnect your ungrounded (hots) first, & grounding (ground) last! When reconnecting Always ground first then hots! The reason is because of potential, someone can turn the ocpd on without you knowing & you do not want to be the grounding conductor.

Suggestion when you install the new pump, make sure that the elbow that goes in the motor for the wires, is plastic and not metal, the previous owner of this house, install a metal elbow. When i had to remove the wiring because it was all corroded. it was extremely hard to un screw it, after two days of putting all kinds of oils and solvents, it would not budge. I tried to force it and the frame of the motor broke.

Hi, thanks for the video. This question's a bit off topic but here goes: For an indoor pool I can use gas heating for the water, if I wanted, so the only necessary piece of electrical equipment would be the pump to keep the water passing through a filter, is that right? Obviously lighting and other peripherals aside. I could use UV chlorination but don't need to - the only electrical thing I actually need is the pump? I'm doing a electrical course project with a swimming pool so it's the electrical wiring I'm interested in and don't want to add unnecessary complications. Thanks. : )

bludika Probably the installer did not use wires to code - I have run into weird wire colors also over the years. Sometimes the electrician will use whatever wires he has on the truck. So I think it is safe to assume the orange wires are the load wires. So the way I do it in this video should be the way you wire yours also.

The only wire colors assigned in the NEC is bare, green, or green with yellow stripe(typically represents a isolated ground)for the grounding conductor & white (120v/240V) & gray (277V/480V) neutral/grounded conductor. Other than that there isn't a color code. Electricity doesn't care what color the insulation is. In low voltage/data/comm wires there is a color index I believe. But standard electrical the ungrounded conductors (hots) can be purple with yellow polka-dots if you want. Industry standard is black red blue for 120/240 brown orange yellow for 277/480. That's AC. For DC no neutral just green/bare is grounding conductor & red is positive black is negative.

You are correct that is called the Bonding lug. It grounds the actual pump housing to prevent electrocution in case there is a short in the AC from the water. The inside ground green wire is grounded to the timer itself. Both are important. Thanks for correcting my terminology - I will post an annotation correcting that clip.

Swimming Pool Tips, Reviews & How To -MrDgvb1 The ground point inside grounds the pump including the case even though the wire connects to the timer. This would protect from a short. The bonding connection ensures that metal components within the pool system (pump, light, etc), are all at the same electrical potential. If they are not, there can be a difference between these and cause a shock, albeit typically quite small. All of this should even be tied into a wire mesh in the pool concrete. Check out the electrical code, its enlightening how much its not followed and how much confusion there is on the subject.
