Will be trying your method soon… thanks for the video.. assuming you use MDF 1x6?
@idealdirecthomeimprovement1639
@idealdirecthomeimprovement1639 Жыл бұрын
I actually ripped it down from a full sheet , the end result for size is approximately 1 x 6. You can use any material as long as you have a little room from the steel post to the inside of the shell. I have a video on how I made them just to demonstrate. Check that video out! Thanks for watching and don’t forget to subscribe!

Hi, can you drywall over them? I want to know if you can attach drywall panels to the MDF. I have a pole beside a wall and wanted to make it connected like a corner. Let me know, it would help to know if its sturdy enough.
@idealdirecthomeimprovement1639
@idealdirecthomeimprovement1639 5 ай бұрын
Why not just frame it in and drywall it? Or use osb plywood to make a box like I did instead of using mdf. I think it would be a waste to use mdf and drywall over it. Make a plywood box, install it with foam and drywall over it. If you install the post cover the way I show, it is super solid, you would be amazed. Hope that helps !

How many cans of foam would you say it took to do the whole job for both posts?
@idealdirecthomeimprovement1639

Great question! I didn’t use the full can . You don’t have to do the entire cavity, just basically spots and like a few rings around the post. Hope that helps!

Hey Edward, I'm following this install step by step in my basement and have a couple questions. I see there is a gap left at the bottom when you remove the shims, so the cover is actually completely suspended by the foam. MDF is a relatively heavy material and I'm wondering if you've ever had an issue with the foam deteriorating over time and the post cover dropping? Is this gap created on purpose in case there is movement in a floating floor? Thanks for your video's! You have been very helpful.
@idealdirecthomeimprovement1639
@idealdirecthomeimprovement1639 3 жыл бұрын
That’s a great question Mike! The primary reason for the gap is to be able to use the shims on the bottom and top to be able to in install the post with ease. I will be honest to tell you that the foam in the covers has never failed to this day. We have been using the foam and this system for over 20 years. The gaps will all be covered with a base and crown. You can leave a smaller gap if you’re confident to install with ease. You can leave any size gap, Mike, I have shared what we do, take this video as a guide to help you. I hope this answers your question. Thank you for watching! Stay tuned for more videos and please stay safe and healthy!

@@idealdirecthomeimprovement1639 It does help. I am installing over a Dricore floating subfloor which may have slight movement, so a gap might be a benefit. Thanks for your quick reply.
@idealdirecthomeimprovement1639
@idealdirecthomeimprovement1639 3 жыл бұрын
The gaps can be whatever you want as long as the last finish trim covers, you’re good. To be honest I would install the posts after the finished floor is installed. I show all of this in the video.

@@idealdirecthomeimprovement1639 Unfortunately, the LePage foam product you have linked to won't ship to the states. I did a little poking around and came across this product also from Henkel. It looks to be the same product from the same manufacturer only marketed for the U.S. I hope this is helpful to other folks south of the boarder. Thanks for all your tips & tricks, Edward! Mike sorry about the bad link! My apologies. The quad is great I have used it before. As long as it doesn’t over expand it will be fine, when you foam, just do the same as I did. Let it cure and go back to it to make sure it doesn’t take the post out of shape. That’s the only trick. Thank you and I really appreciate your feedback! Always a pleasure! Stay safe and healthy Mike!👍🏻

Look nice, but I don’t understand how you’re preventing rotation of the columns in the event of an impact or from someone leaning on an edge. Unless you’re somehow using L-brackets at the top, there’s no way that the foam is strong enough to prevent rotation around a cylindrical lally column.
@idealdirecthomeimprovement1639
@idealdirecthomeimprovement1639 Жыл бұрын
Thanks Ryan, The foam sticks to the column and the cover, as the foam expands it fills the cavity to have a perfect fit. I have been doing this for over 25 years and I have never had any cover move in any way. No brackets needed. If you follow the instructions in this video you will see how solid the cover is. Try it out, and let me know how it worked out for you, try banging and try to rotate the cover when all the foam is set. Thanks for watching and looking forward to hear how it worked out for you.
