On another video I saw a great tip. To ensure that your bit shank is high enough off the bottom place a small hard rubber faucet washer in the bottom of the collet. This will ensure that the bit is high enough to avoid the problems described in the video. Where this really comes in handy is when you are doing a job where you have two bits such as one for a tongue and one for a groove. All you have to do is adjust one of the two bits to the height on the wood you want. Then you can change bits back and forth without adjusting height. You only had to set the height for the first bit. The second is already right for a perfect match.

Thank you. I dabble in creating wood items, currently a chicken Inn and Saloon. I pulled out my fathers really old Craftsman Router, which of course has no instructions.. I have never used one before but knew I wanted to try it out. figuring out how to work the bit was the first step. Plenty of videos on how to use it, not so much on how to start from scratch.

Thanks. After I watched your video I figured out my standard wrench was too wide and not allowing it to tighten. I'll need to find a thinner wrench, similar to the one that came with the tool.

Thanks Fine Woodworking , your video really helped me learn how to fix a router bit. I played your video tutorial keeping my router before me to see the different parts of the machine before I actually went for fixing the bit. Failed twice before fixing it firmly though, I carefully observed you pushing some lever to fix the collet in place before fixing it. I mistook you pushing that lever something that may be specific to your router , but I learned later that the same mechanism in in my router too . I tried copying you in toto and eventually succeeded. I am a beginner, hahhahah , Thanks again Finewoodworking. Shall visit you again. Not forgotten to subscribe.

step 1 is getting a stuck bit OUT of a collet and as more fellows buy used routers, it will occur more. Start there!

When you are tightening are you pressing on the release button-probably wrong terminology lol literally first time using a router and installing a bit 😬😆
