One thing to note about triangle shade sails: They work totally fine, but you'll need 2-3 shade sails for total coverage of an area. The spacing on my deck did not allow for it, so I replaced my original sail with a rectangular shade sail and haven't looked back 😎

Honest effort and a quick solution to add some necessary shade to your deck. However I would seriously caution anyone from installing any kind of fasteners into your soffit trim, especially if it's not into a structural component like a roofing truss or rafter board, and if they are not capable of handling the dynamic wind loads on the threads' fastening hardware, or you're using a thick sail. You're just asking for trouble during a moderate wind event.

After watching your video AGAIN!! {I probably count as at least 5 views by now!} Decided to go with chain rather than cable since it's west side of house I don't have to look at IT & doing it solo so easier for me to adjust. you can use carabiners to attach the sail to the turnbuckle so you can easily remove & reinstall the sail. You may need to loosen the turnbuckle to remove carabiner depending upon how much tension you have.

My brother lives in Rocky Mountains and has three of these randomly placed on a big deck, it can get windy so he used spring loaded attachments along with the turnbuckles, if it's real windy it's better to let the sail give a little rather than being so taunt, it looks awesome, with a beautiful view of the Rocky Mountains,

Thanks for the content. The only thing that needs to be mentioned is the posts should be mounted on a bias away from the sail. When tension is applied, the post will then appear plumb. There is a lot of force at play here and the posts tend to continue bending into the center of the sail. Thanks again, good job.
@Clickumentary
@Clickumentary 3 жыл бұрын
That's a great point. Coming from a sailing background I can attest to the heavy load from main to boom to mainsheet. I want to do this under a pergola 'canopy' but I'm beginning to wonder how much load will be applied to 6x6 posts and ledger board. Much to consider.
@bryans5150
@bryans5150 3 жыл бұрын
@@Clickumentary there is a tremendous amount of stress on the posts. Consider the amount of leverage the sail has against a post of any size when the pull point is 10 feet or more from the ground. I recently saw an installation with 25% bias on posts and looked good. Also wood will keep bending season to season. May wind up with a bannana!

Just saw a video of a guy putting one up that used springs (like for a porch swing) between posts (or structure) and cable ends. Allows for a bit of "give", while still being under adequate tension. Also, using carabineers between between cable loops and turnbuckles allows for easier connect/disconnect.

We hung our rectangle sail, worked great for shade, got 1 1/2 inches of rain in an hour, didn’t run off and pulled the hook straight. Tried again heavier hooks. Same thing happened while we were out of town. Third time tried one corner into the brick wall, again pulled out. We are going for the fourth try as soon as it isn’t 105 degrees. Gotta say that much rain is totally unusual in the Texas panhandle. Really frustrating.

I always found using a 'Sail Shade' works a whole lot better than one of those 'Shade Sails', just saying like....... also if you had attached the (centre point) corner that you hooked up to the roof area, if you attached that above the door and the attached the remaining point on a post just above the seating on the right it would have offer more shade over both the seating on the left and on the right.

Great video, going to put poles in the ground this week to install two 12x12 shade sales over my deck. Are you worried about the hooks on your poles being a bit small/weak, and attaching the other side hooks to the trim of your house in case there's heavy wind and rips your sail off? Just wondering, there have been other tutorials with more conservative installs and I'm liking your method for easier removal if i don't want them up on an overcast day (I live in western washington XD).

Hey man, first of all, thanks for taking the time to watch my video! I had a shade sail installed (the triangle one at the beginning of the video) for about a year with no issues. These hooks are on the smaller side, but have help up plenty fine! But you could def buy the next size up for extra security and a little peace of mind. I considered doing that for this install, but I didn't want to go to Home Depot (due to the shelter in place) for such a small item. I've had a few pretty windy days too, and again not a single issue! Hope that helps!

Depending if the shade sails have perimeter cabling, which professionally made shade sails will ! For a 12m x12m shade sail you would need to have posts that are around 125x125x5mm steel and around 1.5m deep by 450mm wide. For peace of mind and being able to sleep at night during storms ! Using little open end hooks like so are not ideal especially that size ! Hope it helps stay safe, bigger is better 😎

I have actually seen this in person in my own neighborhood and it looks great. I will say that if you want to do this, I think you'd want to install two triangle shades in a cool way to give it a little edge. Two rectangle shades would work too, I just think the triangle combo is usually a little sharper.
