In this video, Shannon shows you how to install a smoke detector. The process is the same for smoke detectors and CO2 detectors. The one shown here is a regular battery powered version but there are also hardwired versions available depending on what is required where you live.

Hi. I’m a subscriber. I enjoy your videos. As a handyman, I would like to share two bits of information for your benefit. One is that there are different manufacturers of these products. With that in mind, if you install a model that has two separate buttons, one to test and the other to “hush”, I recommend that you use a marker and make a visible black dot on the “hush” button when it accidentally (false positive) occurs. Because of the height and the size and color of the letters indicating the “hush” button, the visible black dot helps the homeowner. With that said, the other bit is that excessive dust build up inside the unit can and does cause it go off. I also tell my customers that using a broom or mop handle may allow them to reach without a ladder. Most of my customers are elderly. Thanks, have a great day!

I prefer anchoring smoke alarms with screws, but as I'm sure your aware there are smoke and carbon monoxide alarms that anchor with an adhesive tab only. In fact our town fire department uses the adhesive type in their annual smoke alarm drive for fire safety.

in 2003 the contractor hardwired 2 detectors into the ceilings of the 2 new bedrooms. one month later one started beeping, so i changed the battery. a week or so later it resumed beeping, so i removed the battery. a few days later the beeping came back. i had no recourse but to remove the detector completely. a month later the behaviour started in other detector. i haven't had detectors in the bedrooms since, just two holes with the wires hanging out.

You came on with a video that I need to do.!!! Currently, I have the smoke detectors that I can change batteries - they're 28 years old - if I keep on replacing the batteries, aren't they still good.???
@HouseImprovements

I would say no replace them. Most detectors should be changed every 10-15 yrs anyways because lint, dust and dirt can effect how well they are functioning. Its cheap safety for your family

I hate the sealed 10 year batteries. When they start chirping, I have to throw away the whole thing and be without protection until I can get to the store and buy a replacement. They always seem to die before 10 years, and I've had one die as soon as 4 years after the date of manufacture (in regular indoor conditions, no extreme temperatures). With changeable batteries I can just pop in some new batteries.

I agree. I've had the same issue. Haven't had one last more than three to four years yet. I've had them go off twice now when there was no fire or smoke. I'd rather just replace the battery every year.... like the gas can, the older ones were better.

These are a new requirement in my Province (10 year battery) SO I guess time will tell how long this lasts.

they need to design a vandal proof smoke detector because the tenants at my 60 locations can't seem to leave them alone. :) every year i find myself replacing them.
@Le_Comte_de_Monte_Felin
@Le_Comte_de_Monte_Felin Жыл бұрын
They start beeping and the tenants are too cheap to buy another battery. We started buying 10 packs & if there was an annual inspection (depends on landlord) I'd change batteries & furnace filters. (Furnace filters were another thing tenants will not change... but a few HVAC calls usually convinces landlords to let maintenance make monthly trips just for filters... which also gets them a free 'condition report' of the entire unit.

@@Le_Comte_de_Monte_Felin i have been installing 10 year battery smoke detectors and the bastards disappear them because when they go off, for whatever reason, AND when that happens now they have no battery to pull out ...they get ripped out of the wall never to be seen again. :( i'm tempted to put a breathable lockbox over them but regulations probably won't allow it.
