This is the easiest method I have found for installing a transmission cooler into your vehicle to imporve transmission cooling and fix/prevent transmission overheating. This will improve your transmission's performance while towing or under high power demand conditions as well as extend the length of your transmission and transmission fluid.
The vehicle in the video is a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.7L, but this process is that same for almost any vehicle

Great upgrade!! Simple and effective. I think upgrades like this should be done first to your rig instead of adding every kind of light bar on it... performance before ornaments. Can’t wait for the fan installation video to come out

Definitely...even if you aren't towing, keeping the automatic transmission cool is essential as heat is what kills them quicker than anything. Far cheaper for roughly $50 transmission cooler than $3k+ for a transmission rebuild or replacement. I think he's also spot on with adding additional electric cooling fans, not necessarily need them running continuously but if you are towing heavy or in heavy traffic being able to turn those auxiliary fans on will not only help cooling the transmission/power steering fluid it'll also push extra air through the condenser helping your air conditioner and through the radiator helping to keep it cool as well...I don't think the clutch fans or hydraulic fans help too much with airflow when you are sitting still.

I've done some experimenting over the years, the setup I like to go with is only using the aftermarket external trans cooler around the end of spring/early summer. I've noticed it allows the motor to run cooler for longer before the fan comes on while in traffic or while the motor is warmed up sitting at idle. I live in New Hampshire, so around fall time, I hook the stock trans cooler back up, from the transmission, the fluid goes into the stock internal cooler first, then into the external, then back to the transmission (mine is the 4.0 with the trans cooler inside the radiator). That way the trans is warmed up and ready to go after warming up on a cold start during the cold months. When I am not using the stock cooler, i leave the transmission fluid inside the stock internal cooler with a hose running from the stock trans cooler inlet to the outlet to prevent anything from getting inside. As stated above, after experimenting over the years during different seasons with below zero temps in the winter, and above 100 temps in the summer, using only the after market external trans cooler in the summer months is what I have found works best for my Jeep.

This is good timing on The Pusher fans that you're trying.I'm actually looking to add a pusher fan on my XJ. I am in the belief that my cooling system works fine,but when I amon the trail crawling and not getting a lot of air through the radiator I'd like to have a backup secondary fan to help cool. I'm also am very big supporter of doing trans coolers even on vehicles that may not necessarily tow. I feel that it extends the life of the transmission. Good mod and nice looking install

I think I missed a part. Can you explain a bit? Where is the line flowing fluid from the transmission to the original cooler connected to? There should be 2 lines coming from the Tranny. One coming and one returning. It seems you have used the port entry of the original cooler to connect to the entry port of the new cooler if I am not mistaken. Shouldn't the original port entry be receiving the fluid from the tranny? and the return port of the original cooler should be sending a line to the new transmission cooler being installed (or the top port)? That just leaves the exit port on the new transmission cooler to connect to the line returning to the transmission. I have never done this before but I am trying to understand the schematics of the flow. I only heard you say that one line was returning to the transmission. But which line has been adapted to receive the fluid from the transmission. I think I may have missed that part.

So basically you ran it through the radiator cooler first, then into the external cooler then return back to the transmission? Great fan ideas but I think putting one fan in the middle on the radiator would be better sense the radiator is general is now even restricted more and let the natural flow of air fuse the outside smaller coolers.. just my opinion.
@charlesnorris2993
@charlesnorris2993 Жыл бұрын
should always use the lower (return) on the rad trans cooler. basicly the way you have it the radiator trans cooler will re heat the trans fluid. the idea of a extra trans cooler is to cool it even more after the rad transcooler.

@paullahi2091
@paullahi2091 4 жыл бұрын
Did you put it accidentally on the radiator in line? and bypass the radiator? You want it to flow through the radiator then in series go to the cooler. Put it on the radiator OUT line, then to the cooler in then the cooler out to the return line (filter there) Use the radiator to cool the transmission and then the ADDED cooling capacity. Not a big fan of adding hose without saying replace them often. They break down from the inside so it is not a bad idea when adding rubber to also put a filter on the return line...

How will this effect your engine temperature now that you have restricted the airflow to the radiator. Jeeps by nature have a small grill area which restricts airflow bye design. Not a good design but it looks cool and jeep ran with it. Will this increase the heatsoak issue? If you don't think a trany cooler restricts airflow hold it up to a fan a see what little air passes through it. What are your thoughts on this? It's funny how the new jeeps come with hood vents. 2020 and they still haven't fixed there heat issue. Sorry I love my jeep just been dealing with heat issues since 1970 on all my jeeps.

@Eyes0penNoFear 3 жыл бұрын
I know I'm 7 months late to the party, but to answer your question; the reason to add another cooler is because the manufacturer wants to save money so they factory install a transmission cooler that is good enough for most conditions, most of the time. Heat can cause transmissions to fail prematurely, so it can be a good idea to add something like this to help extend the life of your (very expensive to replace) transmission.

@@ronaldnelson7204 Interesting theory and I believe it has merit however I am going with the installation instructions especially since my cooler is not that large; and I live in the southeast where it does not get cold very often or the same extremes as the North.

@@aquaticnstuff7666 All I can say about that is you better have a temp gage that reads transmission sump temp and that it stays between 135 and 150 deg. If you want to know more call BowTie overdrives in Hesperia California they know their stuff.

Poor guy has to deal with Ford buckets of bolts design. Their engine compartments look like the engine was installed with a shovel, parts tossed under the hood.
