I will be doing a DIY Raid uring TrueNAS. That will be after I put in larger drives into my main QNAP. I am looking at 4 each 6TB Drives, a i5 6500 Mini-ITX board. I understand RAID, but am having a hard time understanding how to do it similar to a RAID 5 with TrueNAS. Buy the way, your videos are exellent.
@HetmanRecovery
@HetmanRecovery 8 ай бұрын
TrueNAS is a popular open-source network-attached storage (NAS) operating system that supports various RAID configurations. To set up a RAID 5-like configuration using TrueNAS, you can follow these steps: Install TrueNAS on your Mini-ITX board and ensure that all the necessary hardware components are connected properly. Access the TrueNAS web interface by entering the IP address of your TrueNAS server into a web browser. Once logged in, go to the Storage section and click on the “Pools” tab. Click on the “Add” button to create a new pool. Select the RAIDZ1 option from the dropdown menu. RAIDZ1 is similar to RAID 5 and provides single-disk fault tolerance. Choose the desired disks for your RAIDZ1 pool. In your case, select the four 6TB drives. Configure any additional settings, such as pool name, encryption, compression, and deduplication, according to your requirements. Click on the “Add” button to create the pool. Once the pool is created, you can create datasets within the pool to organize your data. You can then create SMB or NFS shares to make the data accessible over the network. It’s important to note that RAID configurations, including RAIDZ1, provide fault tolerance by distributing parity information across the drives. This allows for the recovery of data in case of a single drive failure. However, it’s always recommended to have a backup strategy in place to protect against multiple drive failures, hardware issues, or other unforeseen circumstances. If you encounter any difficulties during the setup process or have any further questions, feel free to reach out for assistance.

Great Tutorial. Got my NAS up and running. My only question is that TrueNAS is show an internal address, 10.0.0.10. I like to set it up to reach outside my local area. Any answers would be greatly appreciated.
@HetmanRecovery
@HetmanRecovery 6 ай бұрын
To access your TrueNAS NAS from outside your local area network (LAN), you will need to configure port forwarding on your router. Here are the general steps to follow: Determine the external IP address of your router. You can find this information by visiting websites like whatismyip.com or by checking your router’s settings. Access your router’s configuration page. Open a web browser and enter the IP address of your router in the address bar. You may need to enter a username and password to log in. Look for the port forwarding or virtual server settings in your router’s configuration. The location of these settings may vary depending on your router model and firmware. Create a new port forwarding rule. Enter a name for the rule (e.g., TrueNAS), the internal IP address of your TrueNAS NAS (10.0.0.10), and the port number you want to use for external access (e.g., 8080 for HTTP or 8443 for HTTPS). Save the settings and exit the router’s configuration page. Test the external access. Open a web browser on a device outside your LAN and enter the external IP address of your router followed by the port number you specified in the port forwarding rule (e.g., external_ip:8080). Note: Keep in mind that exposing your NAS to the internet carries some security risks. Make sure to use strong passwords, enable firewall settings, and consider using a VPN for secure remote access. If you encounter any issues or need more specific instructions, it’s recommended to consult your router’s user manual or contact the manufacturer’s support for assistance.

I've had a problem, when I done following the setup processes that you can see in this video, but when I tried to copy, or create a folder on my nas, it always asked premission... So, I navigated to the third dataset, and clicked on the 3 dots at the end, then "Edit Premissions", and then, gave to my account full access to it. Now i can copy and create folders and files. (Also did the same in Accounts/Users too.)
@HetmanRecovery

It sounds like you were able to resolve your issue with file and folder permissions on your NAS (Network Attached Storage) by editing permissions for a specific dataset and user account. This is a common step when setting up network storage systems to ensure that the right users have the necessary access to perform operations like copying and creating folders and files. It's important to manage permissions properly to maintain the security and integrity of your data. By granting your account full access to the specific dataset, you've allowed yourself to perform actions without encountering permission issues. However, it's crucial to consider security and only provide the necessary permissions to users based on their roles and needs. If you have any more specific questions or if you encounter any other issues related to NAS or permissions, please feel free to ask, and I'll do my best to assist you.

Great video, but it hasn't worked for me sadly.. I got to follow along up until 4:42 when you access the TrueNAS web interface. It's all set up the way you did it, but if I try to go to the web interface on my normal PC, it times out. My NAS was connected to a wifi extender which was on the same network, which according to what I found shouldn't've been a problem, but I assumed it was. Then, with some hassle, I connected it to my router so that it was definitely connected to my local network, but even then I still wasn't able to connect to the web interface. The only thing I can imagine is that it's not connected to the network at all, but I'm not sure how to check that.
@HetmanRecovery
@HetmanRecovery 7 ай бұрын
I’m sorry to hear that you’re experiencing difficulties accessing the TrueNAS web interface. Let’s try to troubleshoot the issue together. First, make sure that your NAS is properly connected to your local network. You can check this by verifying that the NAS is receiving an IP address from your router. You can usually find this information in the network settings of your NAS. If your NAS is connected to the network, try accessing the web interface using the IP address assigned to the NAS. Open a web browser on your PC and enter the IP address in the address bar. Make sure to use the correct protocol (http or https) as specified in the video. If you’re still unable to access the web interface, try disabling any firewall or antivirus software on your PC temporarily. Sometimes, these security measures can block access to certain web interfaces. If none of the above steps work, you may want to try accessing the web interface from a different device on the same network. This will help determine if the issue is specific to your PC or if it’s a network-related problem. If you’re still unable to access the web interface after trying these steps, I recommend reaching out to the TrueNAS support team or consulting their documentation for further assistance. They will be able to provide more specific guidance based on your setup. I hope this helps, and please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns!

Can i configure the same drive and make it partition to many users by using the same drive?
@HetmanRecovery
@HetmanRecovery Жыл бұрын
Yes, it is possible to configure a single drive with multiple partitions to allocate storage space for different users. By creating separate partitions on the drive, you can assign each partition to a different user, allowing them to have their own dedicated storage area. Here are the general steps to partition a drive and allocate it to multiple users: Open the Disk Management tool in Windows. You can do this by right-clicking the Start button, selecting "Disk Management" from the menu, or by searching for "Disk Management" in the Windows search bar. Identify the drive you want to partition and ensure it has unallocated space available. If not, you may need to shrink an existing partition to create unallocated space. Right-click on the unallocated space and select "New Simple Volume." Follow the prompts in the wizard to create a new partition. Specify the desired size for the partition, assign a drive letter, and format the partition with the desired file system (such as NTFS). Repeat the process for each additional partition you want to create for different users, using the remaining unallocated space on the drive. Once the partitions are created, you can assign each partition to a specific user by setting appropriate access permissions. Right-click on the partition, go to "Properties," select the "Security" tab, and configure the permissions for the respective user. By creating separate partitions and configuring the appropriate access permissions, you can provide different users with their own designated storage areas on the same drive. Remember to back up your data before performing any partitioning operations to avoid the risk of data loss.

when mapping network drive in windows where did that ip address come from ?
@HetmanRecovery
@HetmanRecovery Жыл бұрын
The IP address of the network drive which appears in Windows depends on how your network is configured and which device is providing access to that network drive. In general, a network drive is a remote device that is connected to your local network and has its own IP address. This IP address can be assigned automatically using DHCP if the network device to which the network drive is connected supports this protocol. In this case, the IP address of the network drive will be assigned automatically each time it connects to the network. If the device to which the network drive is connected does not support DHCP, an IP address can be assigned manually. In this case, you will need to know the IP address that was manually assigned to the network drive in order to access it. Alternatively, if the network drive is behind a router or other network device, its IP address may be assigned according to the settings of that device and may be different from the IP address of the network drive itself. In this case, the IP address displayed in Windows may be the IP address of the router or other device through which network traffic passes to the network drive.

truenas installer wont boot for some reason. it proceeds to boot up OS (linux Ubuntu) currently installed on pc. I do have USB selected in BIOS as the first device to boot from ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@HetmanRecovery
@HetmanRecovery 5 ай бұрын
If the TrueNAS installer isn't booting from the USB drive despite having it selected as the first boot device in BIOS, there are several troubleshooting steps you can try: Check the USB Drive: Make sure the TrueNAS installer USB drive is properly inserted into a USB port on your computer and that it is not damaged. Try using a different USB port or a different USB drive if available. Recreate the Bootable USB Drive: Sometimes the installation files on the USB drive may be corrupted. Try recreating the bootable USB drive using the TrueNAS ISO file and a tool like Rufus (on Windows) or dd (on Linux). Check BIOS Settings: Double-check BIOS settings to ensure that the USB drive is set as the primary boot device. Sometimes, there might be multiple boot options listed, so make sure you select the correct one. Disable Secure Boot: If your system has Secure Boot enabled, try disabling it in the BIOS settings. Some operating systems and bootloaders may not be compatible with Secure Boot. Check Compatibility: Ensure that your hardware is compatible with the version of TrueNAS you are trying to install. Check the TrueNAS documentation or forums for any known compatibility issues with your hardware configuration. Try a Different USB Port: If possible, try using a different USB port on your computer. Some motherboards may have specific USB ports designated for booting. Reset BIOS Settings: In some cases, resetting BIOS settings to default can help resolve boot issues. Be cautious when doing this as it may reset other settings as well. Update BIOS: If none of the above steps work, consider updating your BIOS to the latest version. Sometimes, outdated BIOS firmware can cause compatibility issues with booting from USB devices. Try a Different Installer: If you're still having trouble, you might consider using a different installation method or installer for TrueNAS, such as installing from a CD/DVD or using a different USB creation tool. If none of these steps resolve the issue, you may need to seek further assistance from the TrueNAS community forums or support resources, as there could be more specific issues related to your hardware configuration or the TrueNAS installer itself.

A device attached to the system is not functioning. how do i fix this?
@HetmanRecovery
@HetmanRecovery 8 ай бұрын
Fixing a device that is not functioning can depend on the specific device and the underlying issue. Here are some general steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially fix the problem: Check the connections: Ensure that all cables and connections are secure and properly plugged in. Loose or damaged connections can cause issues. Restart the device: Sometimes, a simple reboot can resolve problems. Turn off the device and then turn it back on. Check for error messages: If there are error messages or warnings displayed, note them down. They can provide clues about the problem. Device Manager (Windows) or System Information (Mac): Check the Device Manager in Windows or the System Information on Mac to see if the device is recognized and if there are any driver issues. Update or reinstall drivers if necessary. Hardware diagnostics: Some computers have built-in hardware diagnostics tools. Use these to check for hardware problems. Test on another system: If possible, test the device on another computer or system to see if it works there. This can help determine if the issue is with the device or the computer. Replace or update drivers: Go to the manufacturer's website and download the latest drivers for the device. Install them and see if it resolves the issue. Check for software conflicts: Sometimes, software conflicts can cause devices to malfunction. Try disabling or uninstalling any recently installed software that may be causing conflicts. Run Windows Update or Software Update (Mac): Ensure your operating system is up to date, as updates can include fixes for compatibility issues. Device-specific troubleshooting: Refer to the device's user manual or the manufacturer's website for specific troubleshooting steps. Check for physical damage: Inspect the device for any physical damage or wear and tear. Physical damage may require repair or replacement. Contact manufacturer support: If you are unable to resolve the issue on your own, contact the manufacturer's customer support for further assistance. Professional repair: If the device is under warranty or the issue is beyond your ability to fix, consider taking it to a professional technician or a service center for repair. Remember that the specific steps you take will depend on the type of device and the symptoms you are experiencing. It's essential to diagnose the issue accurately before attempting any fixes to avoid causing further problems.

@HetmanRecovery
@HetmanRecovery 2 ай бұрын
I’m sorry to hear that you’re experiencing difficulties with TrueNAS Scale and the applications not working as expected. If you’re encountering issues where the applications are getting stuck at “initializing app services,” there are a few troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve the issue: Restart the NAS: Sometimes a simple restart can help resolve issues with applications not initializing properly. Try restarting your NAS and see if the applications work after the reboot. Check System Resources: Ensure that your NAS has enough system resources (CPU, RAM, storage) available to run the applications. Insufficient resources can cause applications to hang or fail to initialize. Update TrueNAS Scale: Make sure that your TrueNAS Scale installation is up to date with the latest updates and patches. Updating the system can often resolve compatibility issues with applications. Check Application Logs: Look for error messages or logs related to the applications that are failing to initialize. This can provide valuable information on what might be causing the issue. Community Forums and Support: Consider reaching out to the TrueNAS Scale community forums or support for assistance. Other users or support staff may have encountered similar issues and can provide guidance on troubleshooting steps. If you continue to experience issues with applications not working on TrueNAS Scale, it may be helpful to provide more specific details about the applications you’re trying to run and any error messages you’re encountering. This information can help in diagnosing and resolving the problem more effectively. I hope these suggestions help you troubleshoot the issue with the applications on your TrueNAS Scale. If you have any further questions or need additional assistance, feel free to let me know!
