Something I would like to add. If you can, lay the tile BEFORE the cabinet is placed, or if you can feasibly take it out, do it. It makes for a much cleaner look of the cabinet sitting on top of the tile, and makes your cuts much easier (only having to worry about the toilet). It does require a bit more tile, but in my experience, it goes quicker and easier when there are minimal cuts. If you are using rectified tile (with sharp edges) and want to ensure that the tile's edges are even, I would recommend using Raimondi's Leveling System. It is an added cost, but my company uses this and it makes laying tile much quicker and ensures smooth edges, though more thinset is used (you'll have to use a 1/2" by 1/2" trowel to account for the thickness of the clips).

You have a great ability to explain and demonstrate things that make these kinds of projects accessible to everyone. I really didn't know how to do anything DIY/Home Improvement-wise and watching your videos has helped me in so many ways. I wish I knew a guy like you that I could hire to do certain things, you seem to take such pride and care to make sure things are done correctly, something that is so difficult to find these days. You make it all look so easy. I just can't get over the fear of doing it myself. The thing is at least for me is if I want it done I have to do it myself. I've gotten estimates and the contractor's want any where from Close to $6,000 with low ones coming in at $4,600. That is just labor. Tiles and paraphernalia are extra

What kind of working time do you get with the bucket of mortar? How long until it hardens up on you and you can’t use it anymore?
@HouseImprovements
@HouseImprovements 4 жыл бұрын
kinda depends on the mortar. Most will give you a working time on the product packaging. I would say normally you have a couple hours but there are a few factors that can change that like temp. Keep your bucket clean so you don't get small bits drying out quicker on edges and falling back in and also mix every 10 mins or so with a small trowel if it sits undisturbed to break down the skim you will get. I never mix a full bag at a time unless you have a real straight open area to do at once.

Once your tiles are laid, have you ever placed a piece of plywood over an area and gently walked on it to level a floor where the tiles may vary in thickness, so that the finished floor is uniformly level ? Thanks J K
@HouseImprovements
@HouseImprovements 4 жыл бұрын
Never, and would not recommend it at all. You can use leveling clips and wedges as you lay the floor if you want. I don't have a video for that.

Looks like subfloor is 3/4" OSB? I've seen some improvement shows recommend getting to over an 1" thick - does the Ditra system negate that need?
@HouseImprovements
@HouseImprovements 4 жыл бұрын
when using a uncoupling membrane (orange product here) there are different recommendations depending on joist spacing and sub floor products and tile choice. In this case we had joists 24" OC and original shiplap 3/4" boards covered with 1/2" plywood then the Ditra. Schluter gives you all the specs on their website.

so what kind of transition are you using going into the adjoining room, why didn't you break the tile underneath the door? normally there is a tile edge/reducer placed at the edge of the tile?

As a tile setter, I would recommend using a 1/2" by 1/2" trowel for a tile of that size. You look to be using a 1/4" by 3/8" trowel, a 3/8" by 3/8" would have done the job nicely as well being a small bathroom.. Just my opinion, Decent video
@HouseImprovements
@HouseImprovements 4 жыл бұрын
Interesting I would have deemed 1/2x 1/2 too large? If these where 24x16 I would have used 1/2 x1/2 on the floor.

@@HouseImprovements yeah...small bath like this you'll be ok. FYI though.....step up your notch size with any tile that has any single side larger than 15". There are multiple reasons and lots of stuff out there explaining it. And use mortar intended for such tile and bed depth. This mortar shrinks too much beyond 3/16 or 1/4 thick or so. Mortars with the designation T and E are great. The tile you laid here is DEFINITELY a "large" format tile.

Grizzly by using a 1/2” by 1/2” trowel and back buttering, wouldn’t it create a lot of excess thinset to squeeze out the sides when setting the tile down?

No DON'T remove the cabinet. That's how people with little to no professional knowledge do it. i.e. many of the people that install for a paycheck but really have no clue what they are doing or how to do things correctly or WHY. The "hacks."
