A Micro-PC or unused Computer is a great choice for hosting your local Home Assistant server. In this video I explain why this Dell Optiplex 3050 beats out a Raspberry Pi 4, for a fraction of the cost and with much more performance, before walking you through the installation process, step-by-step! Follow along to repurpose that old machine gathering dust in the corner or to set-up your purpose bought Micro PC.
EDIT 10/5/23: It seems that balena etcher might be having some issues inside of Ubuntu. The Ubuntu step is intended to save time and money by not having to remove your drive and connect it to another PC. If you are able, and have the additional adapter, feel free to skip the ubuntu step and install HAOS straight to your SSD on the PC. If you do NOT have the adapter, continue with the Ubuntu installation. If you have issues with Balena Etcher, please try the built in Ubuntu Disk Imaging tool or download the Raspberry Pi Image tool. Both of which should allow you to choose the HAOS file and target your SSD for install. If you need help, please reach out to the support channel on the Chuck Builds Discord!

Hey Y'all! Thanks for checking my video out. Unfortunately, it is already a bit outdated. The portion about using Balena Etcher inside of Ubuntu no longer is feasible, and in this (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pMWbp5Sont-dopc.html) video I walk you through a quick alternative. (Spoiler, double click the .iso file!) Thanks and let me know if I can help! Check out my website or profile to join my discord, the best way to get in touch with me!

This is my 3rd attempt at installing the OS directly on the machine instead of on a VM and it's the 3rd time the video was outdated just before I got to the install so I end up back on a VM. I haven't really seen it before but I think it would be great. Instead of uploading a single 15 minute video, upload each step as it's own and set it up as a playlist. That way when one of the pieces inevitably is broken you can just fix the one step. Just a thought to save you some time down the road. I know it's tough and time consuming to make quality content. We appreciate it!

Great Video, other videos have advised to install Ubuntu to the Nuc (mini PC) then use Balena Etcher to overwrite the system drive. This is in fact the recommendation for setting up an Intel Nuc on Homeassistant’s own site. This no longer works as Balena have locked out for Etcher to overwrite the system drive it resides on as apparently many people overwrote the system drive unintentionally this way. This means the method describes on the HA site no longer works and your method of loading Ubuntu from the USB flash drive is better. I ended up leaving Ubuntu on the PC and instead created a flash drive with HA on it and booted this, works as well. Likely I will add an SSD external drive and clone the flash drive onto this, same way I booted HA on my Pi. Last step is, if you have an existing Pi HA instance you need to create a back up, export it to you PC and then log into the Home Assistant as you demonstrated and select restore from backup to transfer the current HA setup to the new machine. Worked OK apart from the Skyconnect Zigbee and Thread USB I was using and had to rebuild the Zigbee stack using my old ConBee II.

I had a heck of a time using an HDMI cable to connect to the PC when using Try Ubuntu.. the screen would flash on each mouse event and basically made it impossible to configure wifi, download HAOS and balena etcher. I removed the HDMI cable and went old school and used a VGA cable and everything worked fine. This was on an sligthly old HP I3 computer I had laying around the house, so maybe this could be an issue with the Dell devices or maybe this was HP specific.

Today I inserted an M.2 Bluetooth wifi card. Bluetooth is visible for HA but I don't know how to show wifi. Do I have to enter the same string with Terminal? Or do I have to install everything from scratch again? Thank you

Overall, I think you should try to keep it plugged in with ethernet if possible. But, if you're set on using wifi, the first place I'd check is the BIOS to make sure it is enabled. I think there's a checkbox under "wireless" in the BIOS. Once that's confirmed, with your ethernet still attached I'd go to Homeassistant > Settings> System> Network and check if the interface is showing there. If it is, you should be able to select your Wifi Network from there.

This video is excellent!! Thank you! Yes, a small change with Balena, now, apparently, one can do it with Linux Disks and just restore the image.||That worked great too. One MAJOR issue with mine, though: Upone booting, I get the message: WARN Home Assistant CLI not starting! Jump into emergency console. No idea how to get out of or away from that. If anyone has a suggestion, it would be appreciated. The HA community says: "type LOGIN", which I do, over and over and over again - still no joy. A few folks have said similar things. Not entirely sure why that is. Great video, and suggestions! I'm following your guide, but how would I give this Dell computer running HA a static IP? Can you point me to a link for information on that or ?? I heard a static IP is better for Alexa integration w/ HA or am I confused? LOl! Thanks so much!
@ChuckBuilds
@ChuckBuilds 4 ай бұрын
Alright, there are 2 ways to do this. The "more correct" way would be to go into your router settings and assign a static IP in the DHCP lease to the MAC address of the HA Host. This could be really easy or really hard depending on your router. The "still works, isn't wrong, but with one caveat" way is to go into your HA settings(gear Icon on the left bar on dashboard)>System>Network. Click IPV4 under "Configure Network interfaces" and change it to Static. You will then type the IP address desired there (with netmask - commonly /24 but depends on your network). The caveat to this is that your HA Host (Dell PC) is saying "I AM 192.168.X.X" to the network but if the IP you assign it is already taken - it'll just drop off the network. So I'd double check before you change it and be aware if your router ever assigns an IP to the same one your HA is asking for, it might drop off - it shouldn't if it has an active connection. In the real world, it's not a problem and will be totally fine but just double check before you save if you are changing the IP.

For your purpose, I’d look into maybe running it as a VM and then use a second VM to run a kiosk mode browser that would output to your screen. The "Best" depends on what your requirements are. I think HA OS on a PC (baremetal) as shown in this video is a great easy way for most people, especially those new to this sort of thing. If you are a power user and will install other things, Proxmox is a good way to do it too. If the words Docker, Hypervisor, or Virtual Machine are new to you - you can just follow this video. If you want to do Proxmox, I've got another video on that. No right or wrong answer and it's super easy to switch between them with a backup and restore if you change your mind!

Thanks for the fast response. I installed my HA on windows via a VM. But because windows automatically updates once a month (or so) it stops my HA from running because I need to manually click somewhere. I installed the way in the video on my other pc and it works perfectly! I’m still curious why you would use proxmox because I think this way is the best way. I have a HP T620. Not for some users: you can’t find UEFI boot in the bios. If you disable legacy boot it works too!
@ChuckBuilds
@ChuckBuilds 5 ай бұрын
Proxmox would give you some extra settings and features around the VM. I don’t find windows VM’s to be very reliable. If you are hosting HAOS on some less powerful hardware it wouldn’t matter as much but if you had a beefy home server, proxmox would allow multiple VM’s and docker containers to share the system and help with backups for multiple things. I think most people should keep it simple and straight forward but proxmox is a great option if you need it

Does Home Assistant offer anything that I can't do with a $3000 gaming computer using window 10 pro ?
@ChuckBuilds
@ChuckBuilds 4 ай бұрын
A bit of an apples to oranges comparison. First, Home Assistant does exist outside of HomeAssistant OS, you can totally run it on that PC at the same time you are running Windows 10 Pro with a docker container or VM. But, Do you mind leaving that computer running 24/7 to manage things around your home? Do you worry about your power bill? Do you want to worry about processing power running your security cameras possibly interfere with a higher demand workload? I like that I've got separate devices for separate needs - I can game or do video editing without worrying about my facial recognition on my doorbell slowing something down, and then I turn off my pc before bed but leave my server running for a smaller amount of power while I'm asleep or away. It's also a lot easier to backup, sips power, and really not that expensive to host. Taking your question at face value, "What is Home Assistant offering more than a high-end PC running Windows 10 Pro?", specific to smart homes - it's so much. I can't imagine trying to source all the integrations, automations, and dashboards with independent Windows programs or scripts. Nonetheless getting them to work together. It's a great way to manage your smart devices in one place and bring in templates, blueprints, or integrations that someone else has already gotten figured out. I'd suggest trying it out on your PC currently with VirtualBox or Docker to get a taste for it but know that I've seen lots of folks have issues with VirtualBox (or Hyper-V) long term. If you decide it's right for you, I'd recommend a cheap separate PC to run the OS full-time.

So I don't understand why you need to download Ubuntu and run that to install HA to a flash drive... I installed directly from Windows to an NVME drive and then installed it, it booted right into HA on the PC. Can you, or anyone else, explain that? Also, the Raspberry Pi installer (same thing as BalenaEtcher) has a gear icon that allows you to specify the SSID/passwd for WiFi.

Hey there, the reason I download and install Ubuntu in order to install HomeAssistant is that I didn't remove the hard drive and don't require any additional hardware (adapters) or know how (installing NVME drive). This is targeted at folks that aren't very tech savvy, so I wanted everything to be easy and low cost. If you installed straight onto the NVME that is great, you don't need Ubuntu then. By using ubuntu, I can boot from a flash drive or Sd card (that most people already have) and install HA on any device from there.

@@ChuckBuilds ahhh, I got it now, I didn't put it together that you were installing to the already installed drive as I watched this, I thought you were installing the HAOS to a flash drive. Much appreciate you clearing that up. You are correct, this is a very easy way to install the HAOS onto a Micro PC. I've been looking for one on ebay as well but haven't been able to find one at a reasonable price. I've dealt with these machines quite a bit at work, which is why I wanted to get one for HA. Thanks.

Isnt this overkill for home assistant? How would this compare to a intel n100 for just running home assistant, also considering running cost?
@ChuckBuilds
@ChuckBuilds 8 ай бұрын
It might be a bit over-powered for Home Assistant until you get video streams involved or object detection with something like Frigate or DoubleTake. It is half the cost of the cheapest N100 I could find. Some Optiplexs on Ebay are 1/3rd the cost of one of those machines. I clocked power draw in another video on my channel and calculated my cost to be about $7 a year with 24/7 uptime. It would be 10 years of use to break even on the N100 compared to the optiplex for me.

Maybe electricity is free in the US. Currently electricity is very expensive where I live. The Pi is very small and runs on 5 volts at 5.1 amps. That is why, living in the UK, I don't run always on systems on a PC. Nevertheless good luck with your channel. Solid advice if you don't mind the electricity costs.
@ChuckBuilds

Hi Gordon, using a Kill-a-watt meter I’ve measured the power draw of both systems. The micro-PC only draws about 4 more watts. My power is $0.09/kWh which would cost me about $7 per year to run this PC 24/7. I’ve uploaded another video on my channel clocking the power usage. I hope you’ll consider recycling a device such as this for future projects!

I watched this because I am installing HA on a micro PC - BUT the 'cost advantage' claims at the start of the video are frankly completely biased, and not true. I am currently running Openhab on a Raspberry pi 3 which are quite powerful enough and available VERY cheaply on an 8gb SD card - which are basically free.... you can't even buy them anymore. I considered running HA on an RPi 4 - at about £50 - but decided to buy another micro PC because frankly I am impressed by their value for money but they are still nearly TWICE as expensive as a RPi4 at £120+ from Amazon or £90 from Ali Express. I will concede that an RPi4 power supply can cost a lot more than it should, at ~£12. But, please don't lie about the prices just to make a point.
@ChuckBuilds
@ChuckBuilds Ай бұрын
HomeAssistant chews through SD cards within a year if you're running more than a few devices. An RPI5 by itself is $80, without power supply, ssd, or case. Cana-kit has a starter kit at $170. I think $65 all in for more performance to handle multiple video streams, hundreds of devices, and host tons of addons isn't much of a stretch. I have the exact screenshot with the prices of items I bought at 0:36 so I'm not really sure why you are saying I am lying about prices. I love Raspberry Pi's and have many of them, I just don't think they are the best choice for HomeAssistant. Their usb 3.0 ports interfere with Zigbee dongles, they are underpowered, and for a long time they were completely unavailable. Can a Raspberry Pi run HomeAssistant? Yeah, of course. It's a great way to try it out with hardware you have laying around and see if it is something you want to use. If you have a bunch of cameras, zigbee devices, media server, file server, DNS and adblock, etc. all running at once - you might find there are times you want more power. I've killed several SD cards with HomeAssistant on a Pi4 - The $65 mini-pc from eBay with a 250gb ssd in a small form factor case, active cooling, and requiring zero assembly or part-sourcing - is a no-brainer in my book. I see mini-pc's all day long on eBay and Facebook Marketplace. Look for Enterprise Technology Recyclers too. I'll admit that living in DFW also helps my local selection a ton but I think you could find something online.

Good and Clear ... I am a bit confused. I saw another video "kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oq9mq9mYsa25e6M.html" where he avoids Unbutu and directly flashes HAOS . Your comments would be welcome.

In that video they used a M2 SATA to USB connector, so they can take the SSD out of the machine and write the HAOS image directly to it. Essentially that allows you to skip the Ubuntu live image step.
@ChuckBuilds
@ChuckBuilds 10 ай бұрын
In that video, he used an adapter that allowed him to connect the SSD directly to a different PC to write HAOS onto the drive. In my method, no additional hardware (such as the M.2 SSD to USB adapter) is needed but this comes as the extra step of installing Ubuntu. I cover this a bit in my Raspberry Pi 4 installation video as "Option 2". I hope that is clear, if not let me know!
