thanks a lot for the video, i wouldn't have made it without you One thing that i wanted to point out if anyone else wanted to use the server for something else, when you're configuring the prerouting, instead of port 80 (which is a commonly used port) you can route the exact 8123 port or anything else, to display there home assistant, so that if you type your server ip address on your browser, you won't only get the home assistant side of things (there's plenty of cool dashboards to display all the current services installed on your server). Thanks again man, happy tinkering everyone

Hi Simon, thanks for the tutorial. I followed it to the t but the very last part (networking) is not working for me (I'm using a wifi dongle on my very hold laptop). As the HA VM image did change a bit (I can't use root or info network in it) I can't identify the gateway. So I tried the second to last command (the one with the network gateway name) on every of the devices listed in ifconfig without luck. I see on the HA page that using VirtualBox is not possible with wifi, do you know if a similar restriction exists with Virt-manager (as it is not mentionned) ? Do you happen to know any workaround or tutorial showing the bridge setup instead of NAT ? I must add that I can connect to the HA page on the device the VM is, but not on my other devices (tried on the iOS app and windows computer)

I am now stuck in a weird boot loop, where it installs, then reboots, and installs again. Eventually it will land on a screen that just says "-Autoboot" in my vm. But that part works flawless, i can start the machine no problem and I have the ip from my Virtual Network, but when I'm using the iptables command it dosen't work. I mean when i go to another PC and try to connect to the ip address it dosen't connect to anything. Do your know if there is a way to see by the command line if the iptable command worked or a fix for this?

Thanks, mate, lifesaver! The one thing I did different was to use "Host device en*" with virtio in the network settings. That is, no virtual bridge. I'm really no expert, but it seems to put the VM on the same network as the host, and has the downside that host and VM cannot communicate on the network. Upside: no forwarding necessary, so it should be easier to make something work... Thanks again!

Simon, Why use a virtual machine to install home assistant? My network is a Unify EdgeMax and I have set up VLANs for each network such as 192.168.107.x for IOT devices. Couldn’t the network router handle traffic to the home assistant and protect it behind the firewall? VM seems like an extra layer. Thank you for the great video and explanation. I look forward to your help with HA.
@HomeSight
@HomeSight 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Perry, I’d use a virtual machine as it’s supported by Home assistant rather than installing core. I agree in using VLANS for network segregation, but most people wouldn’t have the knowledge or equipment to do so. Using VLANS doesn’t replace the need for hosting HA on a device, be it physical like the Pi or virtual.

I’ve done this before, but when I reset my Ubuntu server awhile back I struggled to set it up again, although I did use docker. I’m currently using one of my dad’s old All in One Acer PC’s with a cracked screen so it’s just being used with Ubuntu server to run all my HA stuff, Homebridge, Plex, NTP server and some other stuff. I’ve got this cool little think centre PC which is currently locked down by an Amazon ChromeOS bios, hopefully I’ll be able to reflash the bios chip after my Finals in December, I’ll use that to run my server stuff 😋. My dad doesn’t want me to have the Acer PC behind the TV (so I can use Ethernet) but once I have that think centre pc up and running I’ll be able to use Ethernet and sim definitely use this video to setup HA on a VM

I am aiming towards converting, my house into a smart home using Homeassistant, I got a Pi 4, 8GB, model B. and a Conbee II stick, I was able to set it up with zigbee2mqtt following your epic tutorial, (for the conbee II i had to watch a number of other channels tutorials as well) but it does work now!. i am running HA directly on the PI and did that before discovering your channel. now for the actual question: what pros and cons are there, if i move over to ubuntu like in this video? since i am not a programmer nor an advanced user in this world yet, i want to feel secure in choosing the right path at the beginning in terms of network security, connectivity and speed/delay between the ZigBee devices. i know there may not be a short answer, but if you could just point me in a direction..

That is one limitation of this method, auto discovery is more difficult. You will need to forward the necessary ports through the iptables command, like we did in the video for 8123. I’m afraid I don’t use google cast so I’m not sure what ports to forward. According to google you will need TCP 8008 and 8009; and. UDP 32768 through to 61000.

I had the same problem before. Just follow all the commands in the video. But when you use another PC, you have to enter the IP address of your ubuntu machine, not the virtual machine. You can find it using "IP addr show" in the Ubuntu terminal, and the address right next to "it" will be the IP address to enter in your other computers. Feels like the previous part of the video is kind of misleading, and the explanation at the end makes me understand everything.

@@joeslife520 you saved me. Great video, but just this little bit of information at the end would have saved me hours, this Joe's life saved mine ;)

Are you cabled in? I would try and plug another device in (maybe a laptop?) and make sure that gets an IP address.

It's odd that you start this by showing how to install the os. Just imagine every windows tutorial started off by telling you how to install windows. Lol. The Linux community loves to make everything look as complicated as possible when it really isn't. 🤣
