@viilips Laminate flooring is usually meant to imitate a wood floor which tends to come in varying lengths resulting in a random pattern. The random stagger pattern is suggested because it makes the end joints less noticeable then a consistent stagger pattern. A consistent pattern results in a look where the end joints form a stair pattern that is very apparent and ultimately less desirable to most homeowners.

good video for very basic info for DYI'ers. Would have been more useful if they showed how to click the boards length-wise and the end clips at the same time. Installing a laminate floor is not that hard, but I think this video makes it look easier than it really is.

I also was curious if you think 1/8" gap is a problem for a transition between the bathroom tile and the actual Laminate Flooring. My Flooring is around 3/8" thick and my tile is probably 1/4" tall, but I am planning to install the transition as if these two are equal heights. Do you think I will see any problems? Will I need to shim the tile side up somehow?

Take a flooring & installation class at your local community college. Here in Fayetteville,NC its only $125 . 1x a week for 3hrs... for a total of 48hrs of instruction... mistakes + learning curve will catch up to you... but this method is cost effective and stress free, if you go the DIY route..

if you started every other row with a half of a board this would not look good? I see you ask for random or all sorts of sizes to start rows, but I thought a full piece to start then a half piece for next row to start would be OK. Is this not the case?
@curtisstrauss8

I think it's saying if you go full board then half board then full board then half, etc ... it would look too patterned. So various starting sizes is better.

Apply a small bead of PVA type 2 glue to the seams of the laminate. This will also help prevent spills from getting underneath the boards.

Hey. I am almost finished installing my Laminate Flooring in my Master Bedroom and I have a 1 inch gap between the last piece of full sized flooring and the wall. The wall doesn't have the baseboards installed yet, so my distance is more like 5/8 or 3/4 of an inch. Should I rip a skinny piece on the table saw and use it to ensure zero gap between the flooring and the baseboard? Or what should I do? thank you in advance
@kimchee94112
@kimchee94112 5 жыл бұрын
Glue two sections first, let it dry, then rip it. Or you could hide it by adding a quarter round to the bottom of the baseboards.

the best thing to do when using a tap block, is cut a small strip off a piece of laminate and join just the top to the bit of laminate your taping in and use the taping block against the small strip. that way you don't bust up the joints especially if you have cheaper laminate

Is it better to orient it towards the greatest light source or longest wall because these two are not the same in my condo? Thanks
@bullettools
@bullettools 7 жыл бұрын
If your room is square(ish), then the longest light source is what should determine your layout direction. For more rectangular rooms and for hallways, going along the longest wall will be faster to install and will probably look more natural.

Keep in mind that most legit hardwood (the kind that is nailed in) goes PERPENDICULAR to the joists, which means 99 percent of the time it will be parallel with the longest side of the house. What this means is that if you have a floating floor like this then it would look weird if it was running with the joists. Light sources, imo can be fickle and change throughout the day and if you have a room that is more square but has a light source that goes WITH THE JOIST, then I would strongly advise against doing that. Always go perpendicular to the joists, especially if you really want to mimic the traditional nailed hardwood floors. Sorry Bullettools, not trying to snipe you all (no pun intended), BTW I really like your name and motto. Sound like good second amendment folks!

Is underlayment always necessary? I know some laminate comes with some sort of padding or something attached, which makes it more expensive and so I need to find out if I need any such things before I begin this installation. By the way, I have not watched this video just yet.

Even if there is pre-attached padding on the laminate, you will need moisture barrier, especially if installing over concrete floors.

How do you use the Skimmer ll and No Flip Clip? Never needed it before.
@bullettools
@bullettools 5 жыл бұрын
These are discontinued tools, but the Skimmer II scraped any chips or debris out of the grooves on tongue and groove flooring. This allowed boards to be locked together more easily and saved boards with tongue or groove damage. The No Flip Clip clipped over about two rows of installed click-together flooring (kind of like a bobby pin, but really big) to hold boards in place as you tapped in the next row. On the early tongue and groove planks, boards would often flip up or come loose as you were pounding in the next board with a tapping block. They were some of the original inventions of our founder, Dalen Gunn!

Floor has to be less than HALF of the thickness of the trim to the wall, not just less than the full thickness of trim. Otherwise floor may shift fully to one side and leave a gap on the other side. Been there done that. :(

Do you have an clue where I could get something close to that color scheme, preferably in 12mm with under pad attached. Links would be appreciated. explained well. I have a house on a cement slab with clay underneath with lots of moisture? I installed solid un finished hard wood oak in my four bedroom raised ranch . everything was good for a while until the bedrooms down stairs started to raise up . I had put plywood down first with felt paper and nailed it down with a 22 caliper nail gun and then felt paper and then the hardwood. what a mistake ? I had to rip it all back out again and there was mold present and the nails just pulled right out from the moisture ? Lot I am going to try it again with moisture barrier and the laminate flooring. I hope this works? what a lesson ?

One thing that people should keep in mind is that when you lay the laminate in hot weather, the expansion gap only applies to shrinkage because in hot weather the boards are at their maximum expansion. So the gap needs to be minimal to allow for maximum shrinkage.
