I'll show you how I installed 400 Ahr of Server Rack Lithium Batteries in my 2016 Winnebago View. Also why I didn't take the easy way of installing 2 BattleBorn batteries in the step well. I also kept my wet cell golf cart batteries, at least for now.

The gossiping chickens in the background create a nice contrast to the technical information being detailed in this video. Very enjoyable.

Ron you set your rig up exactly the way I want to eventually set mine up. But man…you almost talked me out of it with everything you did! And some of the difficulties you had. Although I am normally a DIY type of guy (I believe in doing everything myself if possible) I’m a total beginner at this sort of thing I’m leaning heavily toward finding someone to do the install for me. I don’t know your background and experience level so I have nothing for a comparison. Great video, I subscribed quite a while back and enjoy your channel. Keep these videos coming and I hope to see you on the road sometime!

I don’t always take the easy road. Just adding lithium to the original battery bay would be a lot easier. I’m not a mechanic but worked as a mechanical engineer for 40 years. I just like trying new things.

I was kind of set to order a 400AH sealed lithium. After watching this I just kind of got deflated and said its not a DIY for me. I’ll rewatch this a few times to make sure a drop in is not more simple. Good video though, Ron.

Hello Ron. I enjoy your videos. Thanks for them. I don't usually comment, just a thumbs up, but this time I feel I have to write a few words... Hope the installation is safe, especially the punched crimped lugs....? (I would have rented an hydraulic crimper, and put dielectric grease. A lot of current and a lot of vibrations, never a good mix...) The whole setup, with both battery banks, might be ok, but definitely is unique. Unique is not necessarily the best way to go. I have a feeling there will be many more battery videos... For about the same amount of money, why didn't you go with 4 x 100amp lithium at 26 pounds each? You could have replaces your 2 step batteries, + 2 more in the compartment. It makes for an easier setup and ongoing maintenance. Yes, if you plan on boondocking a lot, 400 watts of solar and 400 amps of lithium is more than enough to be totally off grid indefinitely. We have such a setup and only move because of the tanks. For AC, with a soft start, the 2000 w inverter should work, in theory... Be safe.

Thanks for your comments. I did try the AC but wouldn’t start. Will probably get a soft start in the future. I kept the 6v batteries for now. They are only 9 months old. When we get back frim iur trip, i can finish up.

Keep in mind that the crimped lugs are almost as good as professionally crimped ones, but there's a big advantage in only having two of them to worry about instead of the eight you'd need for four batteries. I was thinking about combining two sets of batteries with a rotary switch but was worried about outsmarting myself. Connecting dissimilar batteries presents different concerns and, personally, I'd either want two completely separate systems or I wouldn't do it. But, that's just me, an absolute amateur. Since solar powered camping is a game of redundancy, we have 840 watts of solar panels on our 2021 Navion and, to optimize efficiency, I installed brand-new wiring runs to three new Victron solar charge controllers. It's fun to see how different people solve the puzzle and to note how well it works for them. In general, I'd say 400 watts (about 100 amp-hours of recharging per day) would be the minimum I'd want with our compressor refrigerator. A propane-powered refrigerator is a completely different story. There's a million ways to skin a cat!

Grandpa Ron, how ya doin fellow San Diego? You and I have the same Zamp Solar ZS-30A controller. I contacted Zamp and they said that the controller is able to run lithium but if it doesn't have setting then just use AGM battery setting. But it seems as if you updated it anyways? BTW I have a 2017 Winnebago Via so it has similar stuff and your Sprinter Chassis.

The original solar controller didn’t have a lithium setting. I replaced it when my solar died a year ago. Turns out, the controller was ok but the combiner box on the roof corrroded. Zamp sent me a new box but i already bought the new controller. It has a lithium setting.

Have you had any condensation or humidity issues with the EG4 as it's not a sealed battery? Did the manufacturer OK a location like this? Looking to do the same thing, but worried about the rack battery not being sealed. Thanks!

Hello Ron, do you have a way to heat the batteries in the event of low temperatures and needing to charge?
@ontheroadwithron2432
@ontheroadwithron2432 Жыл бұрын
Not yet. I actually hardly ever camp in freezing weather. Battery will heat itself when using it. I actually have more of a problem keeping it cool. My inverter is in the same compartment and it gives off a lot of warm air when running.

those 6v batteries you got as i said before are garbage the trojan t 125 are much better and now you are not charging them at all plugged in to shore power? So how are you charging them just when you run the engine? as the generator still went through the old converter ncie video Ron cant wait to see how it works to much money for me though
@ontheroadwithron2432

Yes the 6v are only charged with engine. Altho i can conbine both sets for a while and the lithium will slowly charge the 6 volt batteries.

Hello Ron , why did you choose 12v Lithium , vs 48V ?
@ontheroadwithron2432
@ontheroadwithron2432 2 жыл бұрын
Mainly as i already gave a 12 volt inverter.
@koertdubois6781
@koertdubois6781 2 жыл бұрын
We've considered going 24 volt but decided against it. There are advantages to a 24 or 48V system (mostly in that it lowers the cost of the inverter/charger and solar charge controller) but the alternator, shore power, and solar charging systems have to be up to the task. It makes a lot more sense in a vehicle that has a 56 volt auxiliary alternator, and a vehicle that can be run at idle for hours with no concerns.

So you've had this in a few months... any issues with the battery mounted on that piece of plywood? I am going to make a wooden frame with lots of ventilation under and over.

In has been very secure. The plywood is tight on 3 sides and 2 small bolts that go through the floor. No issues.
@grumpyshorts1056
@grumpyshorts1056 Жыл бұрын
@@ontheroadwithron2432 Only reason I ask is that EG4 will void the warranty if there is a fire and the plywood was the source of the ignition. No flammables are to be in contact with the battery. I'm getting ready to install one in our 5th wheel and double checked with Signature Solar where I purchased.

I thought about using that very server rack battery. My concern is would it handle the RV abuse? It's meant to sit in a climate controlled room instead of bouncing down the highway at 70.

Will installing it in a vehicle that vibrates void the warranty? Have you been able to "communicate" with the 12V?
@ontheroadwithron2432
@ontheroadwithron2432 Жыл бұрын
I suppose it depends on the manufacturer. The EG4 is designed for home solar use but is very rugged. I’ve driven over many mikes od washed out dirt roads without any problems. My battery doesn’t have bluetooth but my battery monitor does so i can see the actual charge and discharge current.

Why not crimped butt connectors instead of taped wire nuts? Aren't wire nuts contraindicated due to vibration.

I've been recently using Wago connectors for small gauge wire (10 AWG maximum). They are a joy to work with! (And I like the advice of the guy from The Explorist Life to, except for very-high-current applications, to use 10 AWG wire for everything. I keep a supply of duplex shielded 10 AWG stranded marine-rated cable on hand and use it for just about everything except for the battery - inverter/charger and alternator-battery connections.
