The plumbers putty doesn't replace the washer. The washer goes in between the tub and the drain shoe.

Yes, you are correct about washer under tub. there was an existing washer underneath tub to pvc from a previous install so I left it. I should have mentioned that because it did cause confusion.

The drain pipes have zero pressure, so thread sealant may not be necessary. I appreciate your justification though. Personally I avoid anything that may make disassembly more difficult in the future. I'm repairing my bath drain because the rubber washer was completely obliterated by over-tightening, I think, during installation in 1992. Gobs of putty was found between the bath and the gasket, which served as a weak barrier to prevent water leaks. Thus, I'm still installing the gasket. I think the reason that gobs of putty works (i.e. doesn't appear to fail) is that the water drains at zero pressure, so there is no force pushing to make a gap in the putty.

Its funny you said that because that was my thought as well. I did see the instructions on one of my tub drains and it calls to use thread seal tape to to the male side which would do the same thing. I have never used the thread seal liquid I wonder if it cleans easily?

Surely a bath drain does come under pressure when the plug is open to a full bath of water? That head of pressure is probably pretty high but not constant

Don’t use the thread sealant. You also missed the most important thing, replace the rubber gasket under the tub-upper drain pipe. The rubber is very important and it seal water leaks. Neither thread sealant nor plumber’s putty do. The rubber get hardened, so replacing it is very important.

The rubber under my tub failed and needed to be replaced due to a leak, I agree with Andy.

Andy good point that rubber seal is crucial to prevent leaks. I have looked at a couple of tub drains instructions and both called for thread seal tape not the plumbers liquid seal.

Thanks for the great video. So the best brand thread sealer is? You recommend and is it at Home Depot / Lowe’s? Also you don’t recommend using Teflon as I see in other KZfaq videos and if not, why?

You made some great points about installing it correctly, the first time. I am an industrial engineer having worked with assemblers and maintenance (like yourself) in many various industries from simple manufacturing of household items, to civilian and military vehicles, and I also see the end-result of what happens when someone does not do their diligence at the beginning of a process. What happens is that I (and you) always end up fixing what could have been avoided. One thing that I don’t understand is why the internal metal cross in my old plug has been eaten away and how did this happen? In September 2020, I had two bathroom remodels; the hallway bath at 100% (everything from hardware, new pex piping, cement board, new tile - the master bath uses the same wall piping) Since September 2020, I haven’t needed to use any drain chemicals, so do you have any idea on what’s eaten away the internal metal cross, that is used to tighten the plug? My new plug has a thicker internal metal cross to tighten so it should last longer. The only products that I have used to clean the tub is Comet and bleach. Would these two items each away the metal? I have to replace and install this exact drain plug today. Back in September 2020 I installed this item and used plumber's putty but I didn’t use the Tru-Blue, but I will today.

The item that I am installing today is the "PF Waterworks PF0920-BN Touch (Tip Toe or Foot Actuated) Bath Tub Drain Assembly". The only thing different about this product is that it included a plastic catcher for hair, etc. I am trying to avoid anything other than water and soap going into the new pipes but an idea just came to me; I don't want the plastic to break apart and fall into the new drain. Should I avoid using the plastic hair catcher?

Hi Velton! Thanks for taking the time to comment and share your experiences. I believe the metals corrode over time due to a couple of reasons. Depending on the geographical location, some townships have very aggressive water tables which could help corrode the metals faster (just my theory). A water softener would help reduce that process. The second reason is using bleach and other chemicals over time. Bleach will definitely cause corrosion. I hope my insights help answer your questions. Best of luck and hopefully future repairs go easy on you. Happy New Year!
@veltonmeade1057
@veltonmeade1057 Жыл бұрын
@@vinnythehandyman Thanks. I bet the corrosion is caused by bleach, because I only use bleach to clean my tub and shower. Because of the new piping, I am not using any drain cleaning products. I also had a new sewer pipe installed in the backyard 5 months after the bathrooms were remodeled. So, everything is up to date. Is there anything other than bleach that I should use to clean?

Isn't the washer supposed to go under the tub?

At 1:56 I talk about the thicker washer that is under tub. Typically when there is a new tub drain kit it comes with a larger thicker washer under tub. The thiner version that comes with kit is for above. However, I like using plumbers putty instead. Hope that helps answer any confusion.

@@vinnythehandyman but if the house is that old then that washer is probably super dry and not doinf much anymore. You absolutely should be replacing the washer behind the tub. The putty on the inside of the tub will do nothing for water leaking between the drain and tub onto the floor/ceiling underneath the tub.
@vinnythehandyman
@vinnythehandyman 11 ай бұрын
@@arleneanjos9831 Yes, you are absolutely correct. The tub drain itself was less than a year old. So I knew the bottom washer was still good. The drain I removed had lots of corrosion so I replaced. I should have mentioned that in video. Sorry for the confusion everyone. But Arleneanjos9831 is 💯. Change out washer under tub if possible to prevent future leaks. Thanks for watching.

I live in a 1950's ranch with no basement access (in Florida). Is there any danger at all of the underneath drain line plumbing falling and us not being able to retrieve it? With other things that have been done to this old house, I fear that it was not properly installed and/or supported underneath the house?
@vinnythehandyman
@vinnythehandyman 3 ай бұрын
The tub should be an a concrete slap with an opening by the drain that exposes dirt. If you have a minor leak eventually you will get little critters underneath tub enjoying the dampness. Honestly, maybe it’s time to remove tub and install new plumbing so you know it’s done correctly. Also, you can make an opening on other side of wall where plumbing is and reconnect there with only drywall repair. This way Saves you a lot of money!

@@vinnythehandyman, thank you for your quick response. We're just not in a position at this time (nor do we have the desire) to re-do the bathroom at this time. We do have a closet nearby where we could access the plumbing, if necessary, and then replace the drywall. I hadn't thought of that. Thanks again.
