Thank you for this very helpful video as it made my install easier, BUT it was still a bit of a pain. Just some notes that people may and probably will run into. 1.) The screws are in fact too long that come with the shift knob. I buttoned everything up thinking I was good to go, but found out I couldn't pull my keys out of the ignition, yet I could still shift (was tough). What was happening is the center plunger wasn't traveling high enough, thus the rod on the shifter side was not going up far enough to allow the key release. What I did was found a tiny thin star washer, took the screw and used a #6 deep socket and small hammer. I beat the washer down with the socket on the screw to make it concave. This gave it just enough room to no longer catch any more once tightened. 2.) Make sure when you take out your orange selector shaft that it goes back on the right way and the head doesn't flop over. If you have a head on top it is installed wrong and you wont be able to put the black indicator cover on. If you force it you may break it. 3.) I went ahead and pulled the old shift knob wiring out as noted, then I took some safety wire and fed it down into the hole. I made a loop at the end first, so when its at the bottom you can use your pick to grab it and then get it pulled through the small side hole. I used this wire as a pull string and it worked perfectly. Now, getting it reconnected was a total pain! Just remember that the release part of the connector should be facing towards the passenger door if you forget the orientation of how it goes back. 4.) Make sure EVERYTHING is good to go before pulling up that chrome beauty cover at the bottom. It makes it almost impossible to pull it off like the original one. I had to use a trim tool to pry between on both sides to get it to pop back off. 5.) You do not have to remove the whole console as some have said. Not sure how that would help anyways with the vent duct in the way. Unless you can pull that out with the console, but it seems pretty tight in its place and would worry about messing it up when trying to reconnect it. Since the scare with the key release, I am going to drive it around without the shifter console on and see how it does. Just to make sure it works as intended.

I can see many people are doing this mod. I just finished and it wasn't all that tough. I can only figure Jeg's garage is a wonder with the picks, I'm not all that great, I guess. I finally gave up and slid the console back about a foot, that made all the difference in the world and that is how I would suggest anyone else do it. The console only has 10 bolts and they are easy to get at and it exposes the entire shifter assembly and no need to take the reverse lock out solenoid off either. Anyway it was a great video for reference and the mod was fairly painless although it did take a few hours but I have all the time in the world so I didn't hurry. Thanks

Nice video!! Question...to get the 1st gear to engage, could you have tapped the holes up the lever a mm or 2 or 3 so that the tapered finish piece would then clear black trim? Or would that make the shift lockout feature inoperable? And if it did that, could you epoxy a shim of plastic to the top of that rod or am I barking up the wrong tree here?? Thanx

To anyone whose looking what year model this shift knob is used on is the Ford Flex 09-12 models and Ford Taurus 08-09 models. Look on ebay theres a whole list of this Ford oem knobs being sold by ebay sellers, brand new.

Hello, thanks for this, honestly was very insightful. I would like to install an aftermarket shifter and I was wondering if the just the leather part of the shifter can be removed without disconnecting the overdrive? I've seen similar videos for F150s where they just take the top part of the shifter off, but I guess its because those don't have the overdrive on the shifter lever? I got an explorer 2010, and your video is the only one I could find of upgrades to the shifter. The part I'm looking to install is billiards 8 ball design knob, and it will be my 1st DIY car mod ever, so your feedback and guidance would be highly appreciated!

Jeg's Garage, i was watching how you were drilling straight thru the metal rod it looked like you were going in an angle and was worried that the hole on the other side of that rod wouldn't line up with the hole on the shift knob, obiously it worked out good for you but it was a lucky move. This is why its better to drill the holes one at a time on each side of that rod to get a perfect hole alignment in relation to the hole on the shift knob. It would nice if you can find a way where you can put the shifter all the way to 1st gear without any binding or obstructions but what do you need 1st gear anyway and 2nd and 3rd as well unless you're drag racing the SUV like driving a stick? I drive an 06 Ford Explorer 4.0L i hardly ever use the 3 gears unless i race somebody from a dead stop traffic light but i do use the overdrive switch when i need to accelerate fast by turning the OD switch off.

Jeg's Garage also i checked on that part# you listed at my local Ford dealership they quoted me $45.98, where did you get $12 that must be a very good deal or either they priced you mistakingly on another part that was cheap and gave you that price instead. I know if you buy a new shift knob from the dealership doesn't matter what kinda it is weather its Ford, Mitsubishi, Hyundai, etc you're going to pay at least $50 and up for a shift knob

Im here because The button on my shift lever wont move when its in park i have to press the brake over and over again until the button goes in and i can put it on D only does it when its on park any ideas?
