4 years late but perfect video no unnecessary cuts or music very informative about small things that make a difference. If I had the parts and engine stand handy I feel I could confidently reassemble my L28 off this video.

Suggestion that you put rubber fuel line over the connecting rod bolts. Otherwise they have good odds of scratching the crank on their way over.

Very informative video! Just a quick FYI, using an extension on the torque wrench offsets the torque you’re putting in. Didn’t know if you were aware, but shouldn’t really affect anything as its very little.

These videos are awesome. You should compile a list of every part you used to do a full rebuild like this so other people can have some recommendations for good internal parts, studs, etc. That sounds like a lot of work but maybe you already have the list compiled from when you were planning out your build?
@CarsBikesandCoffee
@CarsBikesandCoffee 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much!! That’s a great idea. All the parts used in each video are listed in the description, but are you saying maybe have all the parts listed with links on the website?

@@CarsBikesandCoffee Yea and like a master list not just for this video but for the whole rebuild. And specs for some of the parts. For example I looked at your piston link to Rock Auto and they have options for .2 oversize .4 oversize etc. So just like the specs for the parts you actually used on your build to give us a baseline

I have been keeping up with the progress on your Z, Very Nice. I am rebuilding a 75 L28 N42 block and currently having the new 30 over dished pistons fitted. until my machine shop called and said they messed up and went 40 over on the boring. they are buying me new pistons but are having problems finding 40 over dished pistons. but can source flat top 40 over pistons all day long. Do you know if the flat top pistons from the '81-'83 years will work in a '75 L28. the machine shop says the flat tops will extend .030 above the block. what can be done to correct this problem? or should he just keep looking for the dished? Thanks
@CarsBikesandCoffee
@CarsBikesandCoffee 5 жыл бұрын
First and foremost, thanks for watching! So from what I understand running flat tops with the N42 will require a little more work if you go that route. Easy for machinists more money, time, and energy from you. Are you in the states? I did some google’ing and it looks like California Datsun might have some 0.040 over dished, www.californiadatsun.com/cylinder-head-parts/dished-engine-piston-set.html I guess, the next question is how much modding do you want to do and what do you want from your engine? Let me know!

Thanks! Awesome! I have a P79 Head (check out the head mod vid!) I have dual Weber carbs, but the eventual plan is to go to triples. Good luck on your build too! What’s your overall Z build plan?
@sbruce899

Rest-o-mod, the car has about 86K miles on it, but not original numbers. it hasn't seen rain or snow in about 25 years, so its about as close to no rust as one can find around here (Omaha, NE) Great Fun to drive. I'm going to stay with the four screw Round tops for Carbs and a header. I've got a N47 head, but I'm going to run a mech fuel pump, and the header has square ports, so I will use the E88 that is on the current engine. Dont know if this is good or bad. Thanks for saving your build to You Tube.

Careful putting the pistons in like that, the rod could be catching on the crankshaft and might scratch if you try to force the piston in. Otherwise, cool build, I look forward to it! If you dont mind, could you list where you get your parts? I saw the partsology video, but I've only been able to find 4 other sites that have parts for these L28s and those pistons look pretty good
@CarsBikesandCoffee
@CarsBikesandCoffee 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Very good advice, I did double check off camera before I started smacking but good to be aware of that.Looks like I didn’t post the link for the pistons, thanks for catching that, just updated. Been having good luck with rockauto.com on hard to find parts , even down to the cam towers. Would it be helpful for a video on all the parts and where they were found?
@toddbentley5416
@toddbentley5416 6 жыл бұрын
Rock auto? That's surprising, on my other cars it seemed that rock auto didn't have many parts. I haven't checked for the L28 (because of that) but if they even have cam towers that's pretty cool. A video on the parts and where you got them would be great, could even include info on specs of the parts themselves. That way you always have one spot to find all that info after it's done in case people want to know more about it. Also, more videos about Datsuns, which I'm all about haha

I was wondering how you calculated the extension into the torque procedure on the rod bearings and head bolts, from my understanding you loss and have to compensate.

Are you certain you're using the correct head gasket for the F54 block? It looks like the one you chose is covering all the small coolant passages to the head on the passenger side of the motor next to each cylinder.

@@CarsBikesandCoffee Look at 8:36 in your video. It's unfortunate when you have to undo what's been done, but in the long run it'll be worth it. I suggest using an OEM Nissan HG or even the MSA/Z Store gaskets are of high quality. Always double check the match up of the oil/water ports from the block to the head, over the years small changes happened to these heads/blocks. Also closely inspect with any HG that the cylinder fire ring on it matches your block cylinder size and doesn't cover it in any way.

Cars, Bikes, and Coffee watching your videos and others is giving me massive motivation to start working on my 71 z.. i have the L28 out on a stand but i bought the car in pieces.. the previous owner took it apart and I’m trying to piece it back together, my biggest question is this. I have a round hole on the drivers side of the engine towards the front of the block where it looks like something goes there.. not sure if it’s coolant or if it’s a breather or what.. do you happen to know what goes there?
@CarsBikesandCoffee
@CarsBikesandCoffee 4 жыл бұрын
+Mike CorLeoné awesome! So assuming the front side of engine, on the head, that is the coolant thermostat housing. That would be where the top of your radiator would connect.
