Very thorough. Talking about how deep to dig with variations of conduit and non-conduit.

@15:21 you got my attention, at 15:38 I hit the rewind and took notes. I looked like a clown when I was laying out wire the other day. Thanks for the good video, made the rest of the day go much smoother.

So I’m trying to remove an old lamp post to extend our driveway. I imagine I can just play this in reverse and that should do it lol

Thank you for sharing. Where did you make the junction for wire running between the two posts? If you did it underground interested in what you used for connecting wires.

@@lettherebelightchannel1335hey there! I have the same question as @moshyt below - I’m installing a second lamp post further down my yard past an existing lamp post (which is hardwired into the house without a switch) How did you wire from the first lamp post to the second? Thanks for sharing your knowledge! Very clear and concise

I want to put two lamp posts in my backyard. It wasn't clear (to me) how you powered the second lamp post. Did that go to a different part of the house? Or did the wires from the two lamp posts run together to the house?

Nice job. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Question: I am just curious. Are you a professional electrician or are you a very knowledgeable DIYer.

Do you need to encase the wire in a conduit or the wire graded for burying is sufficient?
@lettherebelightchannel1335
@lettherebelightchannel1335 2 жыл бұрын
Good question. If your ditch is not very deep then you may want to sleeve it in conduit just for added protection but if you are using type UF underground cable which you should be then it is not necessary or required because that cable is rated for direct burial. That's why I tried to keep it right up against the sidewalk or foundation so that it would be very unlikely for it to be accidentally hit. Hope this answers your question

@@lettherebelightchannel1335 Thanks for the response. Just read the code for my state and it requires the bare wire to be buried at at least 18" deep.
@lettherebelightchannel1335
@lettherebelightchannel1335 2 жыл бұрын
Yes if you are burying the bare wire by electric code it's supposed to be 24" deep or 18" deep if in conduit or 12" deep if protected on a gfci circuit.

That wire next to the drive needs to be deep, because the moment someone uses an edger on the drive then the wire is gonna get cut

So I have an old street lamp that I thought I would rewire and put in my backyard. Can I tap into an existing outdoor outlet to get my power?
@lettherebelightchannel1335
@lettherebelightchannel1335 3 жыл бұрын
Sorry I am just seeing this post. Yes you should be able to use the existing outlet power as long as it is 120 volt. You would have to use the photocell because there would be no way to switch the power on and off

I've got one of those in my yard, and it has never worked since we bought the house. There are no switches anywhere that turn it on or off, there's nothing marked in the breaker panel for it, and yet, there are wires in the post! How do I "trace" those wires back inside the house to find out where they go? Do I need to just replace everything from scratch, and treat it like a new install?
@lettherebelightchannel1335
@lettherebelightchannel1335 2 жыл бұрын
They probably came out of an existing junction box in the crawl space or basement to get power. You need to check and see if you have power on the wires that are there. If you do you can just install a new post there. If you don't have power you can check and make sure there is not a gfci plug tripped somewhere. Or it could be a bad photocell somewhere.

@@lettherebelightchannel1335 As far as I can tell, there is no power on the post. I've gone around flipping switches, breakers, and everything else, and the little Fluke voltage tester I have says none of the wires are hot anywhere. I've been in the crawlspace, and there aren't any wires that appear to be going out toward the front of the house where the post is. I'm stumped. I was hoping I could try some kind of continuity test, but I have no idea where to start.
@lettherebelightchannel1335
@lettherebelightchannel1335 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah that's a tough one. Typically the post light switch would be near the front door or in that area. Sometimes I have seen people hide the post light switch in a closet somewhere so people won't be turning it on and off on accident. There should be some conduit or a junction box coming out of the house where the wire exits the house heading to the post. Unless they went under the foundation which is rare. You just never know what someone could have done in the past. Just make sure there are no gfci plugs tripped anywhere also because if that is tripped you won't get any power at the post

@@lettherebelightchannel1335 Unfortunately, there were no GFCI plugs anywhere. I've been installing them in the bathrooms and kitchen. And I really didn't want to have to crawl back under the house again. There's only 17" of clearance between the bottom of the floor joists and the surface of the crawlspace. It's really claustrophobic. And I'm not the skinny little kid I used to be... LOL! Thanks!

I know this video was posted in september but could I wire into an outdoor GFCI electrical outlet to supply electricity to a lamp post?
@lettherebelightchannel1335
@lettherebelightchannel1335 3 жыл бұрын
Yes that should work. But you need to install a photocell on the post light or somewhere or the light would constantly be on but yes it is a good idea to have the post light on a gfci circuit protection. I hope that answers your question

Did you have a voltage drop issue due to the long length of cable?
@lettherebelightchannel1335
@lettherebelightchannel1335 3 жыл бұрын
No you should not run into any Voltage drop issues unless you are running around 150-300 feet you may start possibly doing some math on Voltage drop. And with the LED bulbs only using approximately 20 watts helps out a lot. If you were using regular old fashion bulbs or trying to run a motor or pump then it may be concerning.

@lettherebelightchannel1335

Yes all whites together. The black from photocell to the black hot wire. The red from photocell to the black from the light fixture. Hope that answers your question

What kind of wire did you use?
@lettherebelightchannel1335
@lettherebelightchannel1335 3 жыл бұрын
14-2 UF wire. It's rated to be able to use directly in the ground so it will not deteriorate in the ground. It has a weatherproof outside sheathing to protect the wires inside from moisture. You don't want to use NM wire because it is only rated for indoor wiring and will not last long outside underground.
