Presumably so they could take a supply off the tree uplighter floodlights in that direction. Much cheaper and easier than running it right back to the house.

It's not solar

Solar lights and photocells aren’t the same thing. Wired lights aren’t the same thing as solar (wireless) lights. The photocell can be attached to either. Solar powered lights, like those you are thinking about, often have a built in photocell, yes. So do street and security lights. The photocell (sensor) often controls when the light comes off and on (i.e. dusk to dawn). A photocell can be wired into the circuitry of a wired light (think about a motion detection security lights over a garage or entry way). Look them up on amazon ;) This light is hard wired to a power source because it’s more likely to survive the test of time. Solar powered lights on the high end can survive a few years, but cheaper solar powered lights last a year or less. Any solar powered fixture will become useless when the panel corrodes or fails, as they always do. A single LED bulb will only cost a few bucks a year at most, so going solar for a few years and having a nice lamp post become useless when the panel breaks down... is pointless. This being a high end fixture, it could be wired to a remote (more durable and costly) solar panel across the lawn somewhere safe, a residence, or city power source. A photo cell could be added either along the circuitry or remotely to come on at night. Even a motion detector could be added so it only comes on when needed.
