My suggestion is to use the stock parts.

It should fit. My personal opinion is skip this one and get a diesel geek one that bolts to the transmission.

I certainly did struggle with it. I learned later that pulling the torx bolt out helps. Probably need a impact driver tool to get it out because its tight.

@@CoolAirVw Nah, it's snug in there with some threadlocker but it comes out fairly easy with hand tools.

Since there is no pin on this shifter assembly you have to just adjust it by feel. Or maybe, pin the trans and have a helper hold the shifter against the reverse lockout and then lock down the adjust ment "springs".

probably. You would have some very hard, notchy shifter effort though,. I would suggest not.

Yes, but honestly it's not worth it. Get the cable upgrades that go in the engine bay for a noticeable difference. Also, get the dieselgeek bushing kit. I have an audi tt and I did the bushing upgrade this weekend and it's AMAZING!! Like a whole new car. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/obZ5fJRkv7umink.html

Yes you can. I put a old porcelain knob with a old vw emplem on it, just had to run a die down to change the thread pitch.

At 12:11 you see the "pivot arm" extending downwards into the shifter housing. It will not slide out because it is down inside the shifter housing. To remove the "pivot arm" you have to first remove the shifter handle, in order to rotate the "pivot arm" out of the slot that it reaches down into. You might be able to install this shifter in the car, but the cat has to come out. Its super easy to remove the whole shifter once the cat is out.

Originally when you adjust the shifter you pin the shift tower at the trans and pin the shifter under the shift boot. Pinning it underk the shift boot holds the shifter in the neutral gate up against the reverse lock out. So since this shifter doesn't have the hole for pinning, you simply pin the shifter tower at the trans and have a helper hold the shifter in the neutral gate up against the reverse lockout (to the left), then adjust your cables just like its a stock shifter.

The metal collar that gets installed is what dictates how reverse is selected. On the stock assembly the collar has a cutout that forces the driver to select reverse by pressing down. On the aftermarket assembly the collar is bent so that it is raised. This raise dictates that the purple over shaft must be lifted over the bent portion of the collar in order to access reverse. This shift assembly changes the way that reverse is accessed entirely.

I dont recommend this shifter at all. If you have a 02a I might suggest looking into upgrading the shift tower and cables with parts from 2001 -2004. After that the diesel geek shifter is good.

Actually you'd probably be better off with the short throw shifter kit from dieselgeek.com

Yeah, this shifter was crappy. (*this video was crappy too). I installed two of these and both customers had me remove them within a year.

yeah, this video sucked didn't it. but in hindsight the shifter sucked too! it had problems then later customer decided to remove it and go back to stock.

thanks for your comment, Zach. I own about 11 mk4 jetta's of which half are manual trans so I assure you I know how to put one in reverse. Plus I run a Vw specialty shop so I think I know how it works. I would assume Zach is commenting regarding 14:42. This type of aftermarket shifter is different from the factory set up and has a different reverse lockout. On this shifter you pull up on the collar to make it go in reverse. Obviously Zach has never installed a aftermarket shifter like this, and never even driven one or else he would know this. Zach makes a comment because hes so dang sure, but he is so dang wrong, which makes him look like he is sticking his foot in his mouth. Anyone on the internet can comment, even if they don't know and have no experience, and are free to just throw any comment out there, despite whether they know anything or not. That's the beauty of the internet.
