But notice how the brush is left there. Sure, it's cut off at the base, but then that's it. These blades are good for cutting down the small stuff, but the Oregon mulching blade is what folks need to be looking at. That thing is a beast, and I have no idea why it's not sold in America. Not only does it cut the tall stuff, but then it chews it into little pieces so you have nothing left but pretty mulch. This allows it to decompose faster, and greatly reduces the wildfire risks! Again, no idea why they aren't sold in the US, but you can find dozens of videos of guys reviewing them in England.

@@WesternEquipment You better believe it! I found out about them when I was searching KZfaq for thoughts on cleaning up invasive vines and scrub. As I watched the video reviews, one after another, I was amazed at how clean they left the area, all the vines and woody stems turned to very small chunks for the most part. It looked like someone had put down bagged wood chips to pretty the jobsites up! It was divine providence, I guess. In all the years I've been in the trade, I've never heard of such a thing. All my brushcutters are outfitted with blades like you show. And like everyone else, I've always had to just deal with the tall grass and such simply falling over on top of everything as I cut through at the base. What I've found through the years is that the long pieces left behind are very slow to biodegrade and a greater fire hazard in drier climes. The Oregon Mulching Blade cuts things up into far smaller pieces, giving you a more even and uniform ground cover that not only degrades more quickly, but also doesn't provide the fodder for flames since it can absorb and hold moisture at ground level just like standard garden mulch does. Plus, it just leaves the worksite looking better. There are two-blade and three-blade models, as well as 3mm and 4mm thicknesses. Guys argue over which is better, but I think it comes down to what you're cutting and how much power your machine has. Both are more than enough to get through the thickest snarls of blackberry, as the videos show. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hdyll9N4utWyqIk.html What I do when I come to a small tree that I can't cut down is to simply chew up the periphery, stripping the leaves and small branches as much as I can. With the scrub denuded, I can come back later with the loppers and herbicide. Until then, at least I've set the plant back a good bit. It was the funniest thing when I realized that all the video reviews I'd watched were from England and not the much larger market that is the US. I can only assume that the bureaucrats had something to do with costing Oregon millions in sales. As you can see when you watch the reviews, these are gents who work with brushcutters for a living and wouldn't be spending coin on chintz that didn't actually work. That you can see them steadily eating through the heavy bramble is just icing on the cake.

Thanks for putting this together, great information. I bought the grass blade (unbeknownst to me that's what it was for at the time) and didn't find it very useful for general brush and weeds. I just Wu's the salesman had told me! Will pick up the brush knife!

I've just got a fs70r and my sales guy recommended the round grass blade. I'd bought a 1/2 acre lot that hadn't been mowed in 10+ years. It had 4ft tall grass,briars,and some stalky thick vegetation. It was a little slow going,but it did a great job and wasnt hard on me physically. After cleaning up the debris and after a few mows with the lawnmower it's starting to look like a yard again.

@@melh4809 it was a one time cleanup. I keep it mowed every 2 weeks now. The only other time I've used the cutter head was at an overgrown farm my sister bought. I used it around the ditch lines and fences so they didnt have to get to close with their mower. The blade has held up fine,just touch it up with a file some. The string trimmer itself has been great and almost always starts on the first or second pull.

Where can I order the kit for FS 111 R trimmer? Some of these don’t have the protective strip piece or the handle you show in your video or don’t work for my model brush cutter according to model numbers shown. I am happy to order from a recommended on line store. I also want to buy that 3 blade brushcutter to use instead or grass cutter.

The three blade cutter is the most versatile of the blade it will cut thru grass and brush up to 1/2 to 3/4 inch in diameter no problem! As long as you make sure the cutting are maintained properly. I did so numerous times during my working life. It will cut thru larger diameter brush, but it’s not the best for that clearing, as doesn’t really cut so much as CHEW through the larger diameter brush. Use the three bade to clear the majority then switch to wood cuter blade to finish the job.

I’m using a new Stihl FS 111 R trimmer and would like to use 3 blade brush cutter but having a hard time finding Stihl Shroud deflector kit to use with the blades. Guy at Ace didn’t tell me I needed the blade shroud deflector kit. What Ace has pictured on their website is not the same as the kit you used unless they left parts out of their picture. I noticed you had different string head on your trimmer. Having problem with string breaking on my 27.2 auto cut head which is why I bought grass cutter blade. I bought my trimmer assembled so I’m sure string wasn’t soaked in water overnight but don’t feel like it should be breaking. Spent $459.99 on the trimmer and purchased grass blade but like 3 blade in your video better. Any thoughts in response would be appreciated. Great video; thank you.🙏

I would look at the Stihl Edgers, such as an FC56C-E. These will have the edger blade and make a very clean edge between grass and curb.

I added a Stihl round grass blade onto a FS55R (I’m aware that an FS55R isn’t a brush cutting model), but could handle the light stuff I had around the house. But when installed, the trimmer had a significant wobble/vibration almost as if the blade wasn’t square. I’ve tried to reinstall it multiple times without any improvement. Any ideas? All is tight and secure. Just at a loss. Thanks!

Part of the problem is that like you said this machine is not rated for the metal blade so since it is just a cable drive the extra weight and force that is being put on the drive cable due to the blade is probably causing that drive cable to flop in the shaft. May not cause any significant problem for a while but could eventually ruin your drive cable. Good question and I hope this was helpful. Thanks for watching!

@@WesternEquipment Thanks for your reply! The Stihl packaging for the blade says it does work for my model. Anyway, the unit vibrations were out of control and there was no way it could work. My hands and arms would have been toast within minutes of using it. Took it back. Wish it would have. What differs between the dedicated brush cutter models and the FS55 and 56?

Very informative video, however for the brushcutter metal blades the black skirt on the guard should be removed, that skirt is only there for use with the line based mowing heads. The reason is the skirt lifts the unit too high and risks debris kick back. It's in the manuals.

It is true that the black skirt is meant for trimmer line but I always put it on so that the machine is ready for whichever cutting attachment I use. I have never experienced any extra debris kickback by having it on but I see where this could potentially be an issue. The skirt is easy to remove though, which is good. Thanks for watching!

i use deflector for fs160 but the nylon is hitting the deflector , the deflector is too close not good at all, also cannot use straight blade its has to be short to work or it will jam the deflector

It could be a few different things. It could be that something is loose down by the blade or it could be that your internal shaft is coming loose from the engine.

Those black add ons on the shrouds are no good, I took mine off and carry nippers to trim the line. Added benefit of less trash on your property too. They stop you from being able to skim the ground since they add another couple inches of height to the shroud

Try just installing your bump head back on top of the blade…don’t worry about that dumb metal kit. You don’t need a kit just go buy a blade from Lowe’s
