Thank you for a great video, I am a 56 year old female and I was able fixed our compressor!! I did have to go to the other comments, of course the valve plate needed to be rotated 180 degrees. When I first installed the intake was blowing outward. I was so confused until I read comments! Thank you for video and comments!! So happy our compressor is working!! My husband was surprised I managed to repair without taking to a repair service.

i watched your video a few times and saw how you snapped off the screw on the connecting rod, I've also tried on mine with a T25 bit, and it was very tight, and i could not loose with my craftsman 8 volt impact screwdriver until i use a torch to heat up the screw on connecting rod, i think that break free the grey color thread locks, and then screw instantly come off easily with my impact screwdriver, save me buying a new connecting rod.

Correct, if given more time I would have applied heat to the screw/piston top, as this makes it much easier to remove the screw due to the thread lock. Thanks for the comment!

Or, a soldering iron on the screw, to do less damage.

You shouldn’t use an impact to tighten bolts, especially head bolts. Snug them diagonally, then tighten each one by hand with a ratchet or wrench. -best to do that in a couple of steps.

I have a style 1 that is being converted to style 2 via the valve plate assy, new piston top, and new piston ring/seal. However I am getting pressure out the vent on top of the head and suction from the output ("L" fitting). Any ideas why? I did follow the instructions to the T. I clipped the zip ties and put the head on. No messing or fiddling with the plates and seals. The piston and ring are sealed very nicely.

Part manufacturer installed the valve plate the wrong direction prior to zip tying the assembly together. Just needed to rotate 180* and all was good.

Excellent series of helpful videos! Thanks for sharing. I purchased the replacement kit, due to a broken reed valve, but the replacement differs in several ways... the main difference lies in the double plate (vs my existing single), an open port hole in the head cover, and a piston head / cover that is solid (as opposed to my existing one that contains valves / reeds. I installed the gaskets and double plate assembly two different ways, but each time, the compressor failed to build any pressure. Not being mechanically inclined, I'm wondering whether or. It I also need to replace my piston head / cover with the style accompanying the overall "replacement kit"? Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated... thanks! -Andy

Well obviously when the unit is apart is an opportune time to take a look at the piston and cylinder cup as well. If the cylinder walls look burnt / scored or you can see a gap in between the cylinder and piston then replacing them now would be a good idea. I would take a look at the valve plate and make sure the valve were in proper alignment with the ports and would open and close properly. I have had to take some of these valve plates apart and clean them because the valves would hang up because of rust or congealed lubricant from setting on the shelf at the factory in the heat and cold. I can't say definitively that this is the problem but i have run in to this in the past. First, however, I'd check the piston ring/seal and cylinder.

Master Tool Repair Thanks. Yea, I decided to replace the piston head and, similar to your video, sheared the screw in removal. I'll need to purchase a new piston arm assembly and possibly a ring (just for good measure).

Great video! Thanks. I have a blown bearing on the eccentric shaft. The inner race is "welded" on the shaft. Any tips on how to remove that?

Thanks Fred! I would suggest putting heat to it, this almost always does the trick. Take a small propane torch to the inner race and with the heat expansion it should be easy enough to remove. Use a small 3-arm bearing puller to remove it from the eccentric shaft. Good luck and hope this helps!

Hi same thing hapen to mine it seems like that is the week part on this model, Ok so what i did is i used a cuting wheel you know on a 4 1/2 inch grinder like i said with a cutting wheel remove as much as you can off the inner race, be careful not to remove too much cause you might remove some metal off the shaft (excentric) and because the inner race is hardened , hit it with a sharp shisel and it will brake in pieces, that is the way i removed mine, hope it help, good luck. Oh well i am looking at the date 2 years ago, oh well.

Why is it after putting a new piston and valve plate on my 26gallon husky compressor when I turn the motor over by the fan by hand it spins freely only 3/4 of the way the last 1/4, is like the old cox gas airplane it feels like it's at a compression stroke

It really depends on the model number, but usually the Piston Rings for the oil-free units are only available in a kit with the connecting rod and cylinder. But again, it depends on the make and model of the air compressor. Thanks for the question!

i replaced the kit but when I turn the compressor on it blows the air intake filter out like its pumping backward. I double checked the orientation of the two holes to the intake. I did not have the new seal. Any ideas on what might be wrong?

Typically this is due to the valve plate being turned 180°. Turn it around and this should fix the problem.

BE SURE to reset cooling fan at bottom of rod stroke! It matters.

It's a good and helpful video but as I watched this I got to wondering if the guy doing the presentation was a manager of some kind and not a technician. Maybe it was a severe case of nerves but there were mistakes like thinking when disassembling there were no nuts on two of the four head bolts (finding one dropped out nut later), calling the head nuts "lock nuts", not knowing to apply heat to the thread locked cap bolt, initially putting the head 90 degrees from correct, etc. etc.

Eric isn't a manager, but it has been a few years since he has worked with these units. Instead of polished videos, we like to make them "real" but I agree that he could have been a little more prepared!

Hey, Eric, nice job, but you did it wrong. If you check your video from 2012, you put the valve plate in correctly then (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mdqmmMJjybKshnk.html at 4:00). At 19:50-19:59 this video, you show the valve plate with the inlet holes on the side of the plate AWAY from the air filter. The valve should admit air on the intake stroke, you have the twin slots on the air filter side, preventing air flow. If the plate is flipped so that the holes are under the air filter, then air will flow into the chamber on the intake stroke. If anyone is in doubt, apply a vacuum to the slotted side and feel the air flowing into the holes. Think of the holes as the soles of Superman's feet as he flies away from you and the slots as his arms blocking air flow. (My simple analogy to visualize the air flow). I liked the video otherwise, kept me from breaking the screw (I used lots of heat and filed down the side of the screw to allow me to put a crescent wrench on the screw for better leverage.) and also the hint about the reverse threading of the fan screw (although I still made the mistake of trying to turn it the wrong way).

Good catch tasdm! Yes, you are correct. I've installed this valve plate many times in the past and maybe it was just the camera jitters, but I did install the valve plate the opposite way it should have been installed. Your pointers and suggestions are very well taken and helpful. Thanks for watching and liking, and for the further explanation!
