How did it go? Which direction did you go in? I’m having a hard time deciding between the wax and danco. At first I was thinking “Better Than Wax”. But danco is calling my name more than that one. My flange sits just about where yours does

New homeowner having to replace seal solidifies what a shxtty job mass home builders do --- cut corners, terrible employees who do bad jobs because they do not care aka no work ethic and/or not trained / work not inspected. Country performance in building sucks in so many ways it ain't funny. This is just out toilets. Think of our bridges and buildings.... not like work ethic is different all of a sudden Thing is developers / builders don't have to care - they get big corporate protection w lawyers who we cannot afford to fight. As a 70+ year old, I have been replacing toilet fixtures and wax rings in all my toilets. To see the shxt jobs that were done when installing flanges is nauseating. I am properly replacing my fourth and last flange today in prep to sell house. My work should last 30+ years for buyer. I have to be able to tell the new buyer what has been completed for them. I have integrity.

This is true because I have a mainline that exits water out of the house that is blocked and the wax ring prevents any water from leaking under the toilet.

No doubt that works most of the time but I'd be willingly to bet the vast majority of plumbers put it on the flange first. Never seen any plumber do that.

I have never seen a plumber do that or even had it recommended. I got into the electrical trade in 2000. (Side note) Things were laid back, and learning on the job was possible back then. But after the 2007/2008 housing crash, in order to make money in the residential market, you have to get in and out as fast as possible and with fewer people. My point (finally) plumbing trim crews might have 2 or 3 people, but usually, each one is on a separate task. Installing the wax ring on the toilet first would probably be as reliable as on the flange "IF" you did it with two people, but by yourself? But alone, I would be wondering if it was on the flange correctly, and then getting a call in a few months to come fix it and also pay for the water damage. When it's on the flange, you can use the bolts as a guide. Most of the time, you can keep the ring in place by pushing the bolts into the wax a little bit. If another ring is needed, you'll know. The other way, you will be guessing, did it fall off or slide, or am I on the flange right. Sorry, things keep popping into my head as I'm typing this. But to be honest, I see no benefits of putting it on the toilet. Lastly, why come on here and somewhat discredit the information. I can see if you asked his opinion, but basically telling him he's doing it wrong or isn't doing it the best way is kinda rude for the amount of good information he has to offer on this channel.

Sure, they work fine in a majority of situations, HOWEVER, that requires an assumption. He's not talking about the perfect situation. He's also talking about a "better" / different solution, especially when there's been adjustments, modifications post inital install. New flooring install was an example. And let's be real, wax rings are about as nasty as they come when doing toilet work! Unless of course a person doesn't mind all that built up fecal sludge and slime when doing renovation/repairs typical of home servicing that comes up time to time. My home for instance, in a 10 year span, required the removal of the toilet multiple times. Removal of preexisting flooring. Ain't down with carpet. Changed toilet 2x. Busted water pipe requiring new flooring and substrate. Toilet removal due to toilet shift time/wood flex, breakdown of wax ring. Bacteria and common household cleaning products will eventually degrade the seal and can end up with leaks, whereas plastics are generally immune to it all.

@@garypear9133 I tried with some floor leveling compound but I wasn't getting anywhere with it. It was really out of level. I'm not the best at doing that anyway. I gave it a try and only made it worse as I kept doing it. Was hard to keep it smooth and level it as I was building up certain sections so I just said F it. Lol. Makes me appreciate concrete finishers that much more.

I knew about taking off the blue extender if the flange is flush or above the floor but did not realize there was a removable black insert until I read your message. According to a Perfect Seal video I saw if your toilet is not flush to the floor, I.E. rocking on the floor you remove the black insert. This will give more flexibility if your flange is point diagonally instead of perfectly vertical. Because I think most people will at least shim the toilet to be horizontal with a level and to prevent rocking in its final form.

Yes the flange needs to be flush or slightly recessed from finished floor.

Those foam rubber ones are very temperamental is what I found. I'm going to have to research those reinforced ones because I have a toilet that just will not stop leaking no matter what. I have a very sneaky suspicion that is the actual pipe and clamping system that the plumbers that came in sometime before I get there put in in the basement.

@@Will_b83 it's something else. I have tried doubling up I have tried five or six different wax seals. Total nightmare. I think it's got to be the pipe underneath and the toilet at fault. For some reason even when it's not even been sat on used or anything while I'm just testing it the water pillows out the back after two or three flushes I lift it up it's hard to pull off the floor because there's wax on the bottom of the bowl and on the flange but it looks like it's getting across the top of the flange or possibly the bottom of the toilet ot somehow. It doesn't make any sense. I've done hundreds of toilets in the last 30 years and never seen anything like this. I've come across destroyed flanges and all kinds of subfloor rot but never a week that wouldn't stop. And this is after about four or five plumbers came in before I did.

@@jeffreywolf5235 the only way to know for certain man. Would be to pull the toilet run a test ball down the closet and run a hydrostatic test. If there is an issue this will tell you where…also on one that give me issues, I’ll use food coloring with my test to see where that water is going.

Put a pen or a screw driver on the side where the bolts are. Easy peasy

There was a great Idea (that was someone’s comment on another video) that said to put straws over bolts to line up. I always browse comments and every once in a while you can learn something to make your life easier.

@@donsmith9081 I have to replace my wax ring tomorrow small leak. Trying to decide what type to get. Just replaced a leaky one 6months ago. Toilet was shimmed due to un level floor the hardest part was lining up every thing will try the straw thing. Hopefully this time everything will stay sealed for good

If the foam is too thick, you can cut it to a narrower thickness for it to work.

Agree 100% Let's get the terminology correct which helps the "do it yourselfer" understand and can aid when describing issues to a real plumber, if needed. I'm a GC having set dozens and dozens of bowls using reinforced wax rings without ever one leak.

That's what I'm facing now. 1/4" difference from flange to front of toilet.

I had a toilet that I had to do a repair on due to a contractor cracking the plastic flange. I did a ton of research on KZfaq on how to fix my flange issue. I repaired the flange by using a 1/2" plastic flange spacer. After installing the plastic flange spacer my flange was now about a 1/4" above floor level. I tried wax rings and synthetic rings but had a reoccurring sewer gas leak. I did more research and discovered the Danco Perfect Seal. The Danco Perfect Seal solved my sewer gas leak and has been holding strong for several years. In my install I did not use the blue extension because I had a raised flange. Using Perfect Seal was the only thing that repaired my sewer gas issue. Perfect Seal is the only product I will use on toilet projects from now on. You can buy a cutter for a drill to cut the pipe internally. Remove the flange and install a new one.

Do NOT silicon a toilet flange.

There's a quick vid by Danco explaining that if the flange is sitting higher or the toilet has a wobble when seating it then remove the black ring. Instructions in the box also have the measurements. Hope this helps, I'm sure I'm to late

Danco is sort of hybrid type having wax ring too. DIY or not one has to know what(s)he is doing.

That's an installer error. If the DIY'er tightened the bolts down to get it to compress. Danco instructions clearly say to remove the rings if the toilet won't sit flush.

Korky is an American company and they make multiple "rubber parts" in the one product that you get at Home Depot. The "wax ring" seals air from the sewer. The water goes down because of gravity. Maybe the "wax ring" prevents splashing water but they have all usually have a plastic "horn" that goes into the pipe. Saniseal is one size but Korky gives you several thicknesses in one package and no slimy disgusting wax.

then, be sure to use those silicone wedges to help stabilize the toilet.

The blue piece is an extender which should help, but you can also get a flange spacer (pvc) that you can use to raise the flange to the right height. they come in 1/4 and 1/2 inch so you can get the right one for your needs. Some people put a silicone layer between the old flange and the spacer but its not strictly necessary.
