Many people ask if they can install Trex over concrete. I will show you how to do it right for a perfect decking installation. In my case I had an existing wall that could not be moved which made it necessary to attach to the concrete surface because there was no room for wood backing underneath the Trex. For this install, you will need a few drill bits, hammer drill and a few tips which I explain in this video. Typically you don't want Trex or decking boards directly on Concrete but in rare circumstances such as this where a wall could not be moved.
TOOLS I USED:
Makita Hammer Drill - amzn.to/3TzuHhP
Masonry Drill Bits - amzn.to/3RyJCGn
Dewalt Clamps - amzn.to/3tsqNgc
Dewalt Drills Kit - amzn.to/4aqWp6t
Wormdrive Circular Saw - amzn.to/4avJal1
Diablo SkilSaw Blades - amzn.to/3RyiOGp
OTHER TOOLS:
Bosch 4 1/2" angle grinder - amzn.to/4arVnY2
Sawzall Reciprocating Saw - amzn.to/3GPJsWi
Milwaukee Sawzall Blades - amzn.to/3RzJwhM
Milwaukee Hammerdrill - amzn.to/3tnUnn9
Estwing Framing Hammer - amzn.to/4awbUu4
Estwing 18" prybar nail puller - amzn.to/48opNbM
Cat's Paw Nail Puller - amzn.to/4axNi4e
Stanley 25ft tape measure - amzn.to/48rQQ61

My deck has a brick/block border that is about 12 inches wide (previous owner was planning to build an addition on the house). Inside that I have a regular 2x6 framing. But I still need to attach the decking to the 12 inch area. The boards run laterally so will need to be attached their entire length versus just the ends like in this example. So the first three boards will be attached to the brick/block area. I like you idea, but I am concerned the anchors will work loose over time, especially since the boards are right at where the steps to the yard meet the deck. I was thinking of using Tapcons instead. Main problem is their color, but I figure i can paint them to match. So my question is how well to the plastic anchors hold up and have you ever trued Tapcon screws for this purpose ?

Great Video, Im trying to do this over my concrete pool deck which does not have enough space for a wooden frame underneath. The hardest part for me is the curve of my pool and coping thoughts.....You in South Florida???

Thank you, this is typically for a small area. For a large area around pool. I would jack hammer out the concrete. I am in San Diego. But if you have time go for it. Try using the pvc decking from AZEK

Can you please tell me what screws, drill buts did you use and also what are the blue anchors ? Please provide the link if possible

the blue anchors are called "tapcons". The decking screws and available from Trex. I recommend a stainless steel color matching screw for the decking.

Glad I found your video. I've been looking all over to see if using those anchors would work. I have old cement stairs at the front entrance of my home and decided to install boards over it to make it look more "modern" but made the mistake of installing the boards over my cement using Tapcons. At the time it worked great but after the snow this winter they all started to pop up one by one. Might've been the freeze and thaw expansion etc. I'll try using this method this spring. I hope it works this time. Had this method worked on multiple applications for you? Do you know if weather is a big factor on these type of installs? Thanks again for sharing

Glad it helps! Yeah the freeze might be an issue with that.

Put 100% silicone in every hole after you drill it, just before you run your screw in, this will prevent water from penetrating the hole and expanding when frozen, and eventually breaking your concrete.

@@bvictory5698 use the silicone before installing the insert or inside the insert? I live in wyoming and plenty of freeze off and on during the winter. definitely don't want to do this incorrectly. thanks.

@@user-lw4mu8gn9z put silicone in the hole first, be liberal, you will get silicone pushed out, then you know it’s full and water can’t get in.

hi what size screw are you using at 4:18 ? if the screws are Self-Countersinking, do you still need to use the tool at 4:05 ? thank you

Yes you should countersink otherwise they may spin the blue inserts. You don't want any resistance. I.I will put a link in the description. The screws are made by Trapease.

I would think it easier to install a wood subframe under? Seems like an over abundance of drilling? But cool

This was a remodel and the concrete was actually part of a retaining wall that could not be moved. Typically you would be right though, easier to build a wood subfloor underneath ideally.

Tapcons would be easier.

Yeah they are easier but they are not color matching the decking boards. They are blue

That's what I was thinking too. I have three boards to attach to brick/block for their full 16ft length. I am concerned the plastic anchors will come loose over time. Yes the Tapcons are blue, but I would think they could be spray painted to match the deck boards no? Before or after installation. That's the way I am planning to go anyway.
