The SSD slot in the late 2012 iMac is SATA3, so there is no benefit to installing the blade SSD when you can just replace the stock hard drive with a 2.5" SSD and get the same performance. That would be for the non-fusion drive models. If you have the Fusion Drive model, then you can remove the stock hard drive and replace the 128GB SSD stick with a 1TB or 2TB SSD stick. Or replace the stock hard drive with an SSD and remove the 128GB SSD stick. Later iMacs had no SSD slot if the Mac did not originally ship with a Fusion Drive.

I have one with the ssd stick... and the hard drive... should I not bother with the ssd stick then ? if i'm not going to gain any speed with putting a stick ssd i would rather just get a normal 2.5" ssd

These videos are very well produced and extremely helpful. For anyone that is hesitant- if you work slowly and carefully, almost anyone can perform this upgrade.

Thanks to this video I installed the SSD in my late 2012 Mac. Everything went very well, it was easier than I expected. The package includes everything I needed to except the screwdriver for the T25. Finally this computer will be usable again because the old hard drive was a real pain.

This video makes removal of the main power clip on the powerboard look easy. It most definitely was not easy for me, and if not careful you can break the connector from the logic board. By using two hands, right hand to carefully lift and elevate the board (without touching any metal capacitor exposures - SHOCK DANGER! ) and your index or middle finger to depress the underside of the connector release, and then your left hand using needle nose pliers to gently rock the connector side to side while pulling it off. This was probably the most challenging part of the whole project.

Could you say a bit about the expected improvement in performance for an upgrade to an SSD?
@poweredbyowc
@poweredbyowc 2 жыл бұрын
When upgrading to an SSD your will see up to 8X more capacity and up to 5.8X faster than existing drive. There is no slow downs - Maintains read/write speeds exceeding 500MB/s over the entire drive capacity.

Does a late 2015 need a heat sensor if the hard drive is changed. I’ve heard people say they have had no issues with the fan without the sensor, and a tech guy told me he took one of the adapters apart.
@poweredbyowc
@poweredbyowc 2 жыл бұрын
The 27" iMac will required the heat sensor. We have had customers not install the sensor and only use an app but they are not as reliable.

If you're upgrading from a fusion drive, and feeling queasy about giving your iMac an autopsy, just connect an external ssd. Make sure it's an NVMe model (eg: Samsung T7). While it almost certainly won't be as fast as an internal drive, it'll still be massive and very visible upgrade over the slow fusion drive. Another benefit of this approach is that if you still want to go the internal route, you can always put that external SSD to some use - backup, time machine etc.

Only problem is the SSDs start dying after so many write operations. They claim typical user would be 5 years but mine only lasted 3. My platter HDDs from the 90s still technically work. That was a sad reality for me when it "bit."

Hey Silvia Cereja Daou, Yes you can by the tools separately if you need to here. eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/TOOLIMACWHL/ But it does come with any HDD/SSD upgrade kit. Yes, we do ship internationally and can ship to most countries across the world. Pricing associated with international shipments vary, and typically start at about $25.00USD and go upwards depending on the weight and dimensions of the item(s) in question. All orders are subject to $0.50USD per hundred dollars after the first $100.00USD to cover insurance cost on the shipment. In order to see what available shipping methods and prices are for your location, you just need to add the items you'd like to order to your cart and use the "Estimate Shipping and Tax" tool on our "View Cart" page for a complete listing of options and their pricing. Generally costs associated with shipping depend upon the weight and dimensions of the items ordered, as well as the shipping destination. Please keep in mind that if you are planning to ship to a location outside the US, our shipping fees do not include and duties, taxes, brokerage, or customs fees that the courier may collect when your package is delivered. As each country has different fees associated with the import of goods, we cannot provide an estimate on what those may be. You can always contact your local customs office for an estimate, if you'd like.

We can tell you that it is possible. There are adapters (we do not offer) out there that you can purchase, but please keep in mind that the drive will not run the speed of the drive but the connector in the iMac. It will always downclock to the slowest speed.

So this is just to add/ replace what i think is the Blade SDD i.e. where a Fusion drive had been optioned in? If so what's the benefit over just replacing the main SDD? Is it faster?
@poweredbyowc
@poweredbyowc 3 жыл бұрын
There is a slight speed advantage in our blade vs the stock blade, but typically in a Fusion set up, the blade (SSD) portion is something like 128GB, and the remainder of your Fusion drive is in the form of a much slower 3.5" spinning drive. Replacing the blade with an aftermarket option gives you a boost of speed overall simply because everything is now running on an SSD, not just certain files.

so basically you making a fusion drive?
@poweredbyowc
@poweredbyowc 2 жыл бұрын
Well a fusion drive is both a HDD and PCIe SSD that are fused together to be seen as one drive. When you install this drive your iMac will see it as its own individual drive. Now if you would like to fuse it with the HDD in the iMac you would have to go into terminal and fuse them together again.

I have an iMac 27 Late 2012. My HDD was giving errors, kept beachballing all the time, and eventually it was not responding.. Now, I want to install an SSD. But there're some points I could not figure out yet. Been watching instructions on how to install etc. 1- Is it better to install a stick SSD over the board? 2- Or an SSD via replacing the current HDD? 2- Or, making the both is an option? Useless? My HDD is broken, starts up in like 100 hours. I wonder, in any case, do I have to install an OS into the SSD, then install it? Plus, I will add more RAM. Is there any other recommendation like changing or updating any other part? Thanks in advance.
@poweredbyowc
@poweredbyowc 2 жыл бұрын
Hello ışıl şen, Without know the exact iMac Model you have we will not be able to tell you which is the best option. Either SSD would be an improvement to the HDD you currently have installed. You can do both SSD upgrades, if you go that route we recommend that buy a smaller blade style so you load just the OS and your softwares and applications because it would be the fastest drive. Then the other drive you would just store your data to eliminate causing slowness to the other drive. Now the RAM you would be also upgrade without any problem but again without the exact model we would not be able to tell what is the max you would be able to install. We would recommend you contact us Via phone or email with your serial number to your iMac and we can provide you links to all possible upgrade options. SSD: eshop.macsales.com/shop/ssd/owc/mac-mini/2012 RAM(Memory) eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Apple/Mac_mini/DDR3_1600 Now for the MacBook Pro I would need to know the exact 2012 model. Apple manufactured 2 with different specification. We would need the serial number or model identifier to provide your upgrade options.

Technically you do not have to put the HDD back in. If you only want to have the SSD in the iMac you can skip reinstalling the HDD. There are customer that like having the SSD with only the OS and their Apps on it because its faster and they store their data on the HDD to avoid the SSD slowing down due to not enough available space.
