How to Install your own Pool Pump and Save $900 - VivoHome vs WhisperFlo. I’ve replaced this video with better closeups for wiring. Same information but it shows more details. See the new video here: • Pool Pump Motor and Wh...
For this DIY, I had to replace a Pentair 2 HP WhisperFlo pump housing that cracked during the Texas Winter storms. It was going to be over $1200 for the WhisperFlo so I opted to try out the VIVOHome 2 HP Pump available from Amazon for $269. It ended up being a great replacement. The documentation on the wiring was lacking, but the install was super easy, but since there wasn't any wiring documentation I made the DIY video to make sure anyone wanting to install this cost saving pump was able to do so with the confidence that it is going to work.
The pump runs quiet, but it does get hot while running. See the link below for where to find this replacement pump:
www.amazon.com/VIVOHOME-Power...
I also found one on EBAY that was open box for $100 less; however, it came in missing key parts. For under $300 repair after including the cost for PVC cement, and unions from the Home Depot, I would just purchase the new kit from Amazon. If you ever need to replace it for some reason you can always roll the dice on your second one and save the $100 bucks.
Please like and subscribe and look out for future DIY projects to include a pool automation video using the Waterway Plastics pool and spa controller, and a 48 inch x 60 inch CNC Plasma Cutting table ( targeting a budget under $1000 including the plasma cutter).

I’ve had a number of people post comments that they needed a better view of the wiring. This is an 8 minute and 28 second video. If you watch the whole video there is a recap of the wiring at the end. There is only 13% of viewers looking at that part of the video. Also, please know that this is one of my first videos and I didn’t have an extra pair of hands to shoot the video. I can edit it after it is posted otherwise I would add additional images of the wiring. But please watch the end of the video if you need additional closeups of the wiring. They are in here. Thanks for watching. Please like and subscribe to the channel so I can keep making more content. ❤ and thanks. -Rob

Hello and thank you for posting this video, my question is, does this kind of pump save money compared to a older annoying loud pump or will it be the same. Mine is working fine, just very loud and it’s behind my master bed room 😢 and i can here it, thats my question, thank you 🙏
@DangerDIY
@DangerDIY 3 жыл бұрын
Salvador, thank you for your question. If your pump is loud it is in the process of failing and is likely using more electricity than normal. But without hooking up a multimeter I wouldn’t know for sure. But if you do get this new pump it runs very quiet. Mine is still running very quiet. I cannot hear it unless I am in front of it. Run the new pump at 220v it you can as it should run a little cooler and use slightly less power than at 120v due to that lower amperage and heat. Let me know if you have other questions and I will do my best to answer. Thank you for watching and for posting.

Hi I have a question we just recently purchased this 4 Hour above ground Summer Waves pool it's approximately 5000 gallons. My girlfriend bought it thinking that it was a heat pump. However I'm thinking that I can still use it. Do you think it's too much for my pool again it's a 15 foot 48 in deep above-ground swimming pool. My next question is how do I keep my pool heated year round? I'm looking for the cheapest most effective option. I would like to keep my pool around 85 degrees. With the lowest cost. I live in the Pacific Northwest what suggestions do you have for me? Thank you for your time and your video very informative.
@DangerDIY
@DangerDIY 2 жыл бұрын
The pump will work fine and you can just run it on a timer for less time to circulate the water through the filter. I would guess 8 hours a day would be plenty for your pool. Maybe 4 hours in the morning and 4 in the evening. As far as heating goes, I use a Hayward propane heater but I only use it to heat a small hot tub section of my Pool. It would be cost prohibitive to heat the entire pool with propane. I had a heat pump on my Pool in KS and a cover and it was still $200-350 a month to heat it. So if you wanted to heat the Pool you will want an insulated cover for when it is not being used and a heat pump style heater like Hayward W3HP21004T HeatPro 95,000 BTU Pool Heat Pump for In-Ground Pools www.amazon.com/dp/B07SQ2M3BM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_HFABTDXRGGJSNRWRX0RC?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 from Amazon or any other highly rated heat pump style pool heater. I hope this was helpful, that I answered your question, and good luck with the project!

so if I understood correctly I just have to cut the wire with the 110v socket and connect to 220v?
@DangerDIY
@DangerDIY 17 күн бұрын
That should technically work out as one would expect the current wiring to be able to handle the amperage load since it is a plug to run the motor at 120v AC and that is an even higher amperage load for the motor than the 240VAC. Cutting the wires and splicing into them should be just fine with that being the deal, right? The problem I have with that, in my opinion, is the plug wiring looks too thin and so I went with wiring of a higher thickness (lower gauge) to handle the high current load. I’ve never cut into the power cord and spliced in the power, rather I’ve disconnected the cord and ran directly to the same terminals they are connected to inside. I may be totally taking an unnecessary step by doing that but this is what I have done and I am on my 3rd motor having had 2 burn up due to the pool pipes breaking during freezing weather and needing to replace the overheated pumps after they ran with no water. But the same connections for 120VAC are the same ones for the two hot lines for 240VAC; just need to make sure the selector switch is on the 240 setting. Let me know how it goes. Thanks for the question and good luck on your install.

Les, I am not sure I am following you on the description of what you are seeing. As far as getting a specialty screwdriver I am sure you can find it online or at a local electrical supply. For the wiring my video shows the wiring on the pump side. You can multimeter out your wires to see if they are 240 volt or 120 volt and to identify each wire correctly (hot, hot, ground, or hot, neutral, and ground. )

I installed the pump yesterday, the unit was wet along with the booklets. The outside of the box showed no water damaged. Right out the gate the pump motor is running hot. Doesn’t seem right. Is this normal?
@DangerDIY
@DangerDIY 3 жыл бұрын
The wetness does seem incredibly odd. No idea why that would have been the case. After installation, Mine was hot enough that I didn’t want to touch it for more than a few seconds. What voltage are you running at? I am at 220v and I would think at 110VAC it might run hotter than at 220. Was the motor running quiet? If it is running quiet you are likely okay. If you take a temp reading I can take one on mine and compare if you like. Just post a reply and I will get that done for you.

@@TheJcrandazzo that is correct. I direct wired but there is no reason why splicing the wires shouldn’t work. The amperage is lower at the higher voltage so the wires should be sufficient. Obviously switch to 240V on the selector before energizing the circuit. 👍

Yes. You should run the pump with a timer to do two things. Save electricity, and money and secondly the pump should last longer running on shorter cycles. www.swimmingpool.com/maintenance/pump&filter/how-long-to-run-pool-pump/ suggests 8 hours a day. My old (25 yrs) pump was directly wired to an electrical breaker box just beside the pump. The wiring to the pump is Red (solid), Blue (stranded) and White (stranded). Disconnect the power -Turn off the pump, shut off the power at the circuit breaker, close the valves to the pump from and to the pool, open the lid of the pump to release any pressure or if there is a drain plug you can open that first. If you have to cut away the old pump, you can use a sawzall or a PVC pipe cutter or a manual saw. All will work. It is okay if there is a little water still in the old pump or pipes. Just take care not to get your electric saw wet on the electric parts (the saw blade is fine). If I didn’t answer your question let me know what I didn’t explain and I will try to give it another go. @@deeday763 that is the bonding wire for your pump to your pool. I don’t have any wires from my pool making it that far (at least that I could find) so my pump isn’t bonded to my pool. But most of the time you will have a copper wire that is bonded to your pool frame and ground and this wire would be used to bond this equipment to that as well.

How has your pump held up?
@DangerDIY
@DangerDIY Жыл бұрын
I had to replace it due to a pipe breaking during the recent freeze and the pump running dry. My bad for the failure. But would probably running still if not for that.

Can you put socks in the skimmer?
@DangerDIY
@DangerDIY 2 жыл бұрын
Yes. I have a skimmer basket that I have at the pool side I have done that with to provide better filtration. I’ve used this one in the past on this type of filter basket Coopache 30-Pack of Pool Skimmer Socks - Filters Baskets, Skimmers Cleans Debris and Leaves for In-Ground and Above Ground Pools www.amazon.com/dp/B073GSWKP2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_ZK8GF50B3YG80YDHZH4X Just order the size that fits your filter basket. I also saw these that go into the side of the motor filter basket: 12 Pack - 4 Inch Ring Filter Socks 200 Micron - Aquarium Felt Filter Bags -4 Inch Ring by 9.5 Inch Long [Short Version] - Fits Eshopps and Aqueon www.amazon.com/dp/B01DAYRQHC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_X6VKZPBZW90125THGZQS I haven’t used those before but they look like they should work.

Do you have to prime a pool pump?
@DangerDIY
@DangerDIY 2 жыл бұрын
I didn’t have to prime mine but I have a lot lower elevation from the pool to my ypump. But it really doesn’t hurt to add water into the system first so it doesn’t run while dry.

@Danger DIY Thanks really appreciate it. I install irrigation pump and I know you have to prime it. They are pretty much the same dealing with the wiring

how's the VivoHome running in 2023?
@DangerDIY
@DangerDIY 7 ай бұрын
I ran it dry and it burned up after an ice storm. But I installed another. I’d say you are going to get a good 2 years out of it as long as you don’t have a mishap that causes it to overheat. It got so hot that the basket melted. That same thing happened when I lost the pentair motor. You may get longer than two years but I did notice it was louder before the mishap which is usually a precipitating indicator of it aging. That is why I am guessing 2 years.

Can u please tell me how to wire the pump I have same but I opened the cover to connect the wire but there is no place to connected
@DangerDIY
@DangerDIY Жыл бұрын
The video shows the wire connection locations. If you cannot see them and follow I would highly recommend hiring an electrician. There was a plug in cord attached which was connected to the same terminals you would use to wire to your electric. Based on the views and comments I would guess hundreds or thousands of people have installed their pumps with this video and were able to see the wiring from it. Did you watch the video as the wiring is what I mainly cover. Thank you. Good luck.

Thanks for not showing the key moment...hooking up the 220. I'll be damned if you can't search for hours and people always fail to include the critical info. Any idiot can connect PVC. I just need to see someone connect the damn 220v!

Sorry you weren’t able to get what you needed from the video and that it didn’t cover what was necessary for your install. For reference, At 2:52 in the video I point exactly where the wires go and mark them on screen with graphics. Also I clearly tell you that the wires that are already there when you buy it (the 110v lines) are exactly in the same location as where the 220v connections go. It is AC so you can put either 110v line on either conductor. Make sure you switch the motor to the 220v setting if you are connecting 220v. I made a subsequent video to this one that shows the wiring more closely. I covered that in the description of this video. But in case you didn’t read that you can find that video here kzfaq.info/get/bejne/n7uFfLZhmt-0inU.html And the wiring starts at 2 minutes in.
