Building A House; How to install your own septic system!
Daniel Woodell
During construction of our new house I decided to install my own septic system. This video shows the process it takes and how to go about doing it yourself to save a lot of money. It shows you what you need and the time it takes. This is a gravity feed septic system and shows how to install septic yourself.

Nice job Daniel, wish they would of had you tube when we did our first two houses. My wife and I have built 3 houses. Starting in 1980 and finished the LAST ONE in 2009. The first one we dug everything by hand. Waterlines, septic tank, leach lines and footings. Too exhausting. The second we rented equipment. The third and FINAL we bought the same tractor, backhoe and loader, you have very good choice. I agree with your brother that unless you are going to continue using the equipment the best thing is to rent. We have 40 acres of farmland so always using the equipment.This was pretty interesting as I'd never seen those infiltrators before. We used perforated pipe laid in 3' trenches with a foot of leach rock below and above, 600' feet of lines. The last house was so much harder as far as the hoops necessary to jump through because of the regulatory agencies. But framing was so much easier with nail guns. Thanks for the video.

They are trying to make it to expensive for a poor man to buy a house. 55 years ago I watched my daddy dig a septic tank which he made of cinder blocks with about 150 feet of drain field we put oyster shells into the drain field the pipe was cast iron. It served for about 30 years at which time my mother connected to city sewage which was unavailable when we built. Looks like you are building a sewerage system for a hotel.

Thanks again Daniel. As I am pretty sure the top of my septic tank is higher than the bottom of my footings, I really hope i do not have to sleeve through the crawl space wall as I am not entirely sure how to properly seal around this penetration without incurring any water in my crawl space? Maybe I have to lower my septic tank? Not sure how far down I have to dig for my footings yet however. Fingers crossed.

Great job my friend hard work by yourself which I will also be doing by myself, I am going to try abs figure out a way to build a contraption that will allow me to drive at least a tractor over the top of my septic system piping and filterators, I will figure it out, or at least 1/4 ways in each end, spray on some cooking oil or natural base oil & lay some sort of protection on top and underneath plywood or whatever type of support in going to use there is plenty of poly board or woods look aligned out there but I’m going to be able to drive over it I’m 18 miles from city but still having the drainage pRt inspected I gotta pay the guy to come out and check it out for me after hours. Just want the draining done right lol thanks for the video

I'm curious about that clean-out. I want to do the same thing with mine and have one port at the distribution box and one between it and the tank. I am wondering if there might be any issues with water flow due to the air in the system either getting pushed into the vertical pipe and pushing back on the water or just a vacuum lock type effect preventing the water from freely flowing. I will have vents at the ends of my chambers, like you, though and I think that might help by giving the air a place to go out. BTW, mine is also gravity feed. I am planning to use those ports for inspection purposes, FYI. If anybody has any info on this please advise. Thanks.

Where I live in Texas you have to have a licences installer for the septic tanks. The installers need to know where the laterals are going to be placed so they don't contaminate creeks and rivers or if you are on a well water system they can't be within so many feet. If you have a hydro-system that runs the waste water through settling tanks and chlorine tanks they have to be inspected every year by a licensed inspector.

Very rich-looking soil. You probably didn't need that many diffusers, but code always calls for over-kill. Looks good. I have a 60 year old simple system that still works. Hasn't needed pumping out in decades. Hope you didn't attach your washing machine drain to it. Bleach and soaps can kill the anaerobic bacteria that breaks down solid wastes.

It looks like they are real shallow (close to the surface) and I have not found much info on what is required. I'm also in Wa., SeaTac area, and I haven't found much useful info on govt. sites such as how far these leach lines have to be separated or depth, you name it. Great video and thanks for posting it.

The depth that they are installed is specified in the septic design that you will need, also the amount of cover is also specified it is very important that they are installed per plan. I’m currently installing another system in Mason County and the depth and mount of cover was inspected by the health district to make sure it was per plan. The depth will be different based on the soil conditions, how much top soil you have and how close the hard pan is. When the perk holes get dug the depth of hard pan is determined. I hope this helps.The depth that they are installed is specifided in the septic desgin that you will need, also the amount of cover is also specifide it is very omportant that they are installed per plan. im currently istalling another system in Mason county and the depth and mount of cover was inspected my yhe health district to make sure it was per plan.

@DanielWoodell
@DanielWoodell 6 жыл бұрын
C R There is no distance requirement, i assume you’re referring to a gravity drain system, you must maintain a certain slope to the pipe, PIPE DIAMETER MINIMUM SLOPE 2 1/2" or smaller 1/4" per foot 3" to 6" 1/8" per foot 8" or larger 1/16" per foot Do you slope requirements are per the national plumbing code, You can also have too much slope which allows the water to build too much force as it’s going down the pipe in closet splash through diversion box basically all I’m saying is don’t run your pipe down hill at 45° angle. However your septic system design should show the slope is required.

Good job on the video. Did you think about back filling over your infiltration pipe with crushed rock to prevent fines from getting into the louvers and plugging up? You have similar soils to us in Pierce County.
@DanielWoodell
@DanielWoodell 6 жыл бұрын
I think you could do that, however there is some very specific install instruction for the infiltrators, for example the dirt along the sides where the louvers are has to be lightly packed, before the rest is back filled. The inspected actually checked that. It surprised me.

+h2bbuilt That Tractor is a Kubota and it cost $32,000 plus all his attachments rounds out somewhere near $45,000 plus a lot of welding and modifying. He bought it in Oregon and he picked it up using an F-150. Which by the way is a bad idea, because the tractor weighs more than an F-150 can tow correctly, it damaged his transmission and his truck hasn't been quite right since. Ideally you would own a Diesel 2500 of pick your own brand and that hauls it just fine. He has a flatbed trailer that (add $5,000). This is my brother and I'm glad he buys cool stuff like this so he can do things with and or for me but for the everyday guy going to build one house and live in it, just rent one and it will be cheaper.

Well the tractor I have is not an excavator understood, however the tractor itself weighs 2400, the front loader is 900 and the back hoe is 1900 also the heels are ballasted hey add another 800 each. For a total of 6800 lbs. Also the trailer I have witch I realize is over kill weighs 3500 lbs. so real weighs that was towed behind the truck was 10300 lbs. The max tow rating for my F-150 truck was 8800 lbs. I did have all of this stuff weighed. In any case I cant prove that towing the tractor with my F-150 is what wrecked my transmission but I will say it was over weight for the truck. Sometimes you have to make what you have work. I have cense bought and F-350 diesel as to no wreck another transmission.

And I am going to be doing this in about 5 months. Only thing I am king to do different, is: I am going to bury my filtererator(black covers) a little deeperabout 18” just for my own sake, ever plow or plant something g I want it at least minimum 14”-18” deep shovel spade deep couldn’t tell how deep you went really my depth oerceotion is off I hv a slight cold(NOT COVID), I’d gone deeper, and I hv always used 45degree fittings when possible, eliminates negative pressure, for easier flow, path of least resistance, kinda(I spent 14 years in the swimming pool installation part, always used 45’s) strictly habit. Great job my friend

What county and state are you in? In Washington County, Minnesota we could not install a system like that. The code is more restrictive here, which makes the systems last longer. What is the white pipe on top of the footing?

We are in Kitsap County In Washington state. The white pipe on the top of the foundation is for all of the gutter to tie into. They then drain into a Infiltration pit. @bobhaas6941
@bobhaas6941 6 жыл бұрын
You need to check if that green pipe is going into the septic, or if its the pipe leaving the septic and going to the drain field because that would clog up the drain field. The septic's purpose is to catch solids and sludge so only waste water goes to the drain field, so you don't want to bypass it.

The distance away from the house is determined by the perk test the perk test is done by a septic designer there is no specified distance away from the house for a drainfield it has everything to do with the soil content of soil type and drainage ability of the soil if you’re doing this without a septic design you’re probably not going to be able to pass inspection.

In my state it has nothing to do with the number of sinks, bathrooms, showers, toilets, dishwashers, wash machines, or drains. It all revolves around bedroom count and potential 'users'. You can have 12 bathrooms and 1 bedroom and have a smaller tank and field as a home with 1 bath and 12 bedrooms. It also depends on percolation of the soil. And the 'rules' are going to be different from municipality to city to county to state. Each will have different regulations that agree or disagree with another. Here, we have rock and clay in different parts of the county, so you may have a 'great location' for infiltrators or best for wetland or old grey water systems as well as the new Geotextile type leach systems. I've been in contracting for 26 years now and have a pretty good knowledge of the process here, which in no way is perfect. I also helped a friend when his infiltrator field stopped working. He had to pump the field and tank several times and after years is still holding water even after we diverted to a secondary and much bigger field below the original. At the first the environmental said 'add another leach field downhill' then it was 'it must be longer and wider' and then 'it has to be a minimum of 4ft below grade and level, which put it 9ft below some of the grade. This also forced us to break solid rock. We finally had them out and after a heated discussion and several calls, finally got them to OK a more shallow field so they could start showering and flushing again. We also racked up about 8k in costs even doing the secondary field ourselves. To this day the original filed still will not drain because of percolation failure of the original field, which by the way was only about 10 years old at the time of the original builders installation. Our Environmental Engineer inspector has described several jobs in place here that have 'miles of leach field in order to work correctly to standards and regulations'. One restaurant here, that is also near a watershed creek, has more concrete in their septic system build than 10 houses would need and has to be pumped several times a month to accommodate the business needs and not run into the watershed of the old town. It's a crazy thing flushing a toilet......... Your best bet is to attach to the city sewer if you can, but that's just not the case for most of us!!

How much would you estimate the materials and permits cost on the system, and thanks for the effort to post this, very good training video.

Infiltrators $1800piping\fittings about $400tank $1200 Permits health district $600 Septic design $1800 Time about 20 hrs. So about $5800I got a few estimates the cheapest one was $12500 all the way up to $18100

Upside to DYI Septic: 1. There's not a lot of risk to messing it up in terms of systems that would have to be rebuilt because of a problem down the line (as opposed to indoor piping, laying a foundation, framing, etc..), and you probably won't be holding up the building schedule if you start the project at the right time of year. BUT You're also looking at another 3-5 days worth of land-moving machine rental, which adds another $1,000, and your measurements need to be spot on or you'll be digging up your yard in a few years. So, if $7k in materials and 20 man hours is best case scenario to DYI successfully, when you consider labor cost per hour and liability insurance, $12,500 for a professionally installed septic is a pretty good quote if the materials they use are better quality than you can get for a DYI project--especially if they have a rep for standing behind their work. Just on my street, I've seen two $2500 finger digs turn into $10K fiascos. Hard to know exactly what's under the ground until you start turning up soil.

@Daniel Woodell Thats really good. Here in NJ a new septic system costs 20-30k on average. They're extremely strict with regulations and we have a lot of groundwater. One of the largest aquifers in North America actually.

Perforated Pipe is cheaper. He said the infiltrators cost $1800 (in another video) perf pipe is around $300. Both fail at about 20-30 years. The infiltrator is a bear to remove. Inflitrato breaks up and you need to remove all of it. So I have been told by my township inspector.

Those holes 4 ft deep for the inspector are a mystery to me.......for me Its a contingency for buying the lot that a perk test be done before the lot is purchased....not after the septic/leech field is put in. What if the inspector says sorry folks the dirt not good enough....too bad. All that needs to be handled before you buy the lot....
@Maintenance63
@Maintenance63 7 жыл бұрын
yes, I do not understand that either. I am in the process of getting permits and the perk holes have to be dug first.
@DanielWoodell
@DanielWoodell 7 жыл бұрын
So yes there has to be holes first I did not show that very well in this video. But in Kitsap county in Washington State, the inspector that dose the final inspection requires there to be one hole on the down slope side and one hole on the end of the drain field to validate that the infiltrators are not in hard pan. these are separate from the perk holes that you dig to validate dirt type. I am currently installing a system in Mason county in Washington and they don't require these last to holes. make sure you check your local requirements

I'm in the same boat, but I plan on an acreage with some old machines for digging etc.. If you're thinking cabin in the woods and not owning any equipment, I'd probably farm this one out. I keep working up cost projections for wells, septic, land clearing.... It all comes down to what equipment you want to purchase and if you don't have a use for it after building..... is it really worth it?

Thank you for the video. I need some one to repair or replace my leach field. We have 4 leach fields. One is failing since my septic tank, 3 leach fields and distribution boxes are all good and working. I need someone to extend my leach field, repair or add one Parallel to existing one and connect to the existing distribution box. I am not good in DIY had stroke 6 years ago and live in CT anyone you would recommend. I need some one to repair or replace my leach field. We have 4 leach fields. @DanielWoodell
@DanielWoodell 8 жыл бұрын
yes i had to get a engineer to draw up the plans in Kitsap county it is called a sight development plan and it show the house, property lines, well, and the general topography of the land, it also has the proposes septic system on it. i paied for this before i purchased the property as i wanted to make sure that i would get approved for a gravity drain system, before i owned the property. Its kind of a risk doing this first because if i did not get approved for a gravity drain system i would have been out $1800 for the sight development plan.

In Kitsap county Washington state if you get approved for a gravity drain septic system then yes the homeowner is allowed to install the system themselves. Homeowners are not allowed to install any other type of system in Kitsap county. That is governed by the health district.

Great work; everything is precise and so on; but is this not complete overkill and over-engineered? I am no plumber; so if I say the wrong thing; blame my lack of knowledge. You have a marvelous septic system, but for one house only? This system is adequate for at the very least 30 house-holds! Good Lord. I manage a 30 bedroom resort and we have far less intricacy in our system. We have not had a single effluent issue in 11 years. Do you poop a lot? LOL. I am not trying to be condescending here; but this construction is to the best of my experience completely unwarranted.
