HOW TO INSULATE a Self Build CAMPERVAN - DIY Budget Campervan Conversion

In this video we'll show you how we insulated our self built campervan. After much research we decided this installation in our build was best for us and we believe the same will ring true for most others building their own campervan. We'll put all opinion to one side and give you all the facts which guided us in our decision making. Even if you don't agree with us hopefully you'll be able to understand the reasoning behind our thought process!

Hi Craig. Im loving your videos. I am doing a van conversion in Ireland. So we are putting the windows in at the moment. The first window we got a leak hence we found your channel! 2nd window this weekend so hopefully we have learnt our lesson. I love how you explain and work. Keeping it simple and straight forward. Another great video mate you did right putting the cork on above the cab first I put the sliver bubble wrap on first and the first trip out there was loads of condensation so I’ve pulled it off now and used the sticky foam with the thermo on the back of it and carpet over it 👍

Cheers Arno! 😁🍻 Good luck with the route you decide to take! Vapour barrier or not I'd definitely consider giving the sills a quick blast of Waxoyl for how little it costs and the protection it offers. One can was perfect for our L2 so should be for yours too. 🙂

I like the low budget approach not like other videos here. They all using top shelf materials and talking how professional the build is, fine when you can afford it but what about those who are having old van and low budget to deal with? In end of the day its all about to get you down the road and try van life and see places. Would be a good idea if you can add spending summary in each video just to show people that it can be done on low cost. Use cheap alternatives not just top shelf stuff Loads of people are put off the idea of doing it because of the cost. Hope you can prove that is not necessarily the case.

I've seen interiors built from just pallets that look amazing and like you say it's all about getting out there on the road and enjoying what the world has to offer. We 'are' trying to work to a small budget but there will be two big budget items in there that we personally don't want to be without; a Maxxfan to try and keep the van as cool as possible in the summer for our dog and also a 12v compressor fridge as we're hoping the efficiency will offset the initial monetary outlay. Of course for someone else, a cheap skylight and cool box could easily substitute these! We're planning on doing a video on costs once finished but for the time being we've listed all the items we've used in the video descriptions. Yes, some are Amazon links but they're items we've purchased ourselves as they were the cheapest. We've also made sure to list where we purchased everything else from as again we found them to be the cheapest, such as the PIR boards from Buildbase. 🙂

I totally agree with you I feel that it's got a bit silly with people feeling the need to make it all perfect and professional looking. I used to watch a couple of guys just like this one and i can tell you I felt more inspired by the have a go worriers more than the omg look how perfect this van build is. type of people

@@PilgrimPods Thank you! Glad you like it! It's a tank for sure! Besides a few bespoke bits its pretty much a mash up of different manufactures of the era it was built. Our long term plan is to travel the US and Canada, in a dream world we'd then move it to Europe and travel there. I'm (Andy) originally from England but L is a native Virginian, where we currently live.

Totally with you on the vapour barrier. If you think of it more as an air barrier as that is what you essentially need it is even more impossible to install. Nobody mentions the elephant in the room being that everybody comes across Mr V's video first and copies him without any research.... Keep it up.

Make no mistake Mr V has done the best build series hands down and I for one certainly appreciate all of his content but I just happen to disagree on this one area, but then again I'm not an expert. My own personal thoughts are most of us probably overthink this area when the reality is it's ventilation that is truly key here. I'm sure I'll find out in time whether I was right or wrong! 😀🍻

Great job. I wish i had used that board on my floor, but did not want to lose the height being 6ft1. I do have a cold floor. Laminate floor insulation doesn't cut it.

As someone that has spent many years converting shipping containers into other things I wholeheartedly agree with the lack of moisture barrier. Unless you can spray foam and seal everything everywhere 100% your wasting money and effort. The roof will be the main condensation area, so seal that as best as possible or find a way to deal with it. Managing vapour/moisture is what’s needed, ventilation and even dehumidification. All that’s makes me sound much cleverer than what I really am but I’ve never found mould or evidence of mould on any conversion that got ripped apart after many years. Good video 👍🏻

It's comforting to know someone hasn't bothered with a moisture barrier in their metal box and after years there has been no issue. Thanks for sharing! I've stumbled across a few videos over the years of people converting containers into living spaces and always thought what an amazing thing it is. I'd love to try and do that myself but I'm not brave enough to take that on. Kudos to you!

@@PilgrimPods there’s not a lot too it, it’s just a bigger heavier dirtier metal box than a van 😂. Thankfully I don’t do that anymore after all those years. Keep the videos coming - you seem to add a bit of a round up or reflection at the end of them which makes a change from some stuff I see.

100% true I believe the best way to avoid condensation is to either use spray foam everywhere, or line everything (and I mean every single centimeter of metal) with thin self-adhesive closed-cell foam, and then put your proper insulation on top. Also, I believe that the best way to stick PIR boards on a van is with low expansion PU foam. Then you not only get a proper bond but also a seal that will not allow any condensation to form behind the PIR boards.

Great vid again Craig. Will be putting a vapour barrier in my van conversion. However what worriers me, if anything leaked, like round a ceiling fan/vent, solar panel fixing, you would never know until it was too late !! Trying to workout a method of checking under the vapour barrier somehow,once a year say.... Will look forward to see the next stage of your van build, looks great so far.

Thanks John. I originally planned to have a vapour barrier (you could say I've almost got one with all the foil and tape I've used) but elements like the drainage holes swung my decision. I think good ventilation is key whatever route we take so I'll be mindful of that when using the van to limit any moisture buildup. A short follow up video might be worthwhile when using the van to see whether my decision appears to be right or wrong... Best of luck with your own conversion!

I agree with you on vapour barrier. You’ll never properly seal a van. When I’ll fit out my van I’ll just put vents in the inner wall panels.

Hi there! Thanks for your content - finding it really helpful in the lead up to our van project. We are also looking at buying a citroen relay around the same age - as we want a widthways bed (tall pair!). Did you have any concerns buying a slightly older van? We are finding so many builds are on much newer vans and its simply not within our budget!

No concerns whatsoever. It's always worth going on MOT checker to see what has been flagged up on previous tests to get an idea of things. Being an older van with 170k on the clock I'm prepared for the possibility of repairs but have my fingers crossed they won't happen. Any car/van can have problems regardless of age and at least we know ours is well ran in. Maintenance is key and chances are if you get an older van with plenty of service history you'll hopefully be golden. Another important consideration is its past life and what has it been used for. Better a high mileage van doing motorway runs delivering pillows than a low mileage van moving bricks day in day out! 😄

Hmmm.. to vapour barrier or not? The best answer is you need both insulation and ventilation in your van. The vapour barrier works to keep condensation away from the cold metal structure and helps with thermal bridging. Basically some use of all of these are best practice in your build. My own experience leads me to use a vapour barrier, but that is my choice of course. If you want to see probably the best advice, have a gander at Greg Virgoe’s two videos on this subject on his build. Greg is a heating and ventilation design engineer. I’m formerly in the property business and refurbishment where this subject is also a ‘hot’ topic. Really enjoying the build, especially that this is on a budget that more folk would see as possible for themselves to achieve. Best to go your own way and enjoy the results 😎👍✅

As much as I love and respect Greg I'd need more than one heating and ventilation engineer to convince me to blindly follow their lead even despite the facts they present. The older I get the more it seems I question things. I've tried to do my own research and listen to various sources before deciding what's best for me. Listening to a few engineers from the marine industry weighed quite heavily in my decision. I'm no expert and wouldn't have the audacity to say THIS IS HOW THOU SHOULD DO IT 😄 but I would say there's an argument not to have a vapour barrier and folk should weigh up the pros and cons for themselves. 🙂

Hi Craig. After thinking about it I think you may be on to something mate. A house has vapor barrier fitted but it also has vents. So, barring that in mind it is logical to install a vapour barrier but leave the lower channel as you have done to breath and also maybe some inspection hatches and fit moister sensors to warn of a build-up of condensate. Maybe even fit one-way valves to let moisture out and possibly some kind of vent. Only thinking maybe, a house builder could add some thoughts on the matter. Great topic Craig well spotted

Hey Ken. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Like you say, it's an interesting topic and I don't believe either route is a definitive right or wrong. I'm of the belief each and everyone of us should weigh up the pros and cons and make a decision what best suits us personally. That's exactly what I've done and decided a vapour barrier wasn't right for us based on researched facts from various sources as opposed to listening to one person's opinion, and using my own common sense. 😊

We've very recently started our first Citroen Relay van build and have just discovered your videos. We've never done this before and are finding them really informative, straightforward and very helpful. One question I have - is there anything you wish you'd done differently?

Thanks and yes, got to grips with my sound levels for the videos earlier on... 😄 I'm building the kitchen units at the moment and in hindsight probably should have fit them straight after the bed frame. Other than that, nothing really so far.

One of the first things I bought was a plastic sheet vapour barrier but like you after looking at my Relay I'm not sure there's any point in trying to use it. There's so many interlinked channels that I'm sure I won't be able to close it off. My Relay came with plastic bungs for those side cill drain holes. Currently I have them removed to allow airflow.

Hey Matt, sorry for the slow reply. Personally I think a lot of us over think the vapour barrier conundrum. I'm trying to limit exposure to the metal of the van but accept I'll never be able to fully seal it all off. I also remind myself the metal of my van is galvanised and has a layer of primer and paint protecting it. If I had a Sprinter or Transit I'd probably be a little more worried as I've seen many an abused five year old van on the road with signs of rust taking hold because they're not galvanised. Regardless of whatever route you take, all the best with your own build mate!

I removed all recycled bottle insulation from van was building up and absorbing condensation i noticed aswell on t5 that theres actually vent holes in panel floor to circulate air from below to gril at top rear just a small flow but its important to breathe, i doubled up on soundead everywhere and cell foam now no condensation in mornings or ever

I would LOVE side by side comparison of two vans!!! One like tihs with proper insulation< And another with the same volume of windows and no insulation> Would there be any variation in van enjoyment??? The widows take upw what?? ... 60% of the wall area ??

I always wonder how much effect insulation has in those rail channel cavities. Decent at radiation and convection of heat, but what about conduction from the metal? Perhaps spacing the walls from the metal is the solution. Air is a decent insulator. PS: I think your moisture barrier theory is correct. You can really only slow it down - which isn't bad in itself.

Regarding the sills - watch out that any water ending in there is meant to drain through existing gaps/slits between the outer sill skin and the vertical wall on the inside. I've sprayed cavity wax in mine as well - and then I've discovered that water was accumulating in there after that and not draining away - as the slits were blocked. As a temporary measure, I removed one of the rubber bungs to let the water drain away - but I really have to unblock the slits for free drainage. The design of the body allows water to drain into the sills - from the bottom of the sliding door channel, and also from another place I haven't been able to identify yet - as the sills on both sides fill up with water when the drainage holes are blocked. So you do need to make sure that there is a way for the water to drain away. One more thing - watch out that you will need to have a way to get behind the rear light cluster - as I believe that is the only way to remove it in order to change brake/indicators/reversing light bulbs. So whatever you attach instead of the two internal black plastic panels have to be relatively easy to remove. I hope the above helps. Good luck with the build - it is looking good! :-)

Thanks for the advice Seb, especially regarding the sills. I've carpeted the access hole for the rear lights as well as the surrounding area but the area behind is free of insulation so when the time comes to get in there I'll just cut a slit in the carpet and tape it back up afterwards as it'll be hidden by the trim piece. Again, appreciate the advice! 🍻

Back in the 90s I waxoyled the insides of all four doors of a car I had. Ten years later the engine was worn out and the shell was rotten, except for the doors which were like new. It does work.

I’ll be using similar materials but definitely going down the vapour barrier route. If you’ve ever stayed in a camper in winter the amount of moisture you produce is mental! Best to limit as much as is possible because unless you are installing proper ways to ventilate the area behind the insulation it’s never going to dry out!! I’d be interested to see the two options properly tested though! You never see after build comparisons. Also one thing about the air coming in from outside, it’s colder at ambient and not moisture laden so won’t condense on the skin. 👍🏻

I've only ever really camped in tents but completely get your point about the moisture buildup in winter! 😁 Ventilation should be key in any van build in my opinion to limit that moisture buildup. I completely get your point about the drainage holes but having now given them a good scrub it's clear to me moisture/water can get it in through them via air/splashes/whatever it may be. 🌊🌧🌪😄 I was also concerned about achieving a 100% sealed barrier. Better to let the van breathe and ventilate well in my opinion. A test of both methods would be great, someone needs to get on it! Like I say, all we can do is research and decide what works best for us. However, I'd say there's certainly an argument not to install a vapour even though everyone does seem to be trying to install them. 😊👍

Ive just had to rip out my van conversion to to damp in the van which had a vapour barrier in it, What started out as a little refurb has ended up back to a empty van. Not sure weather to put the vapour barrier back in or not or do as you have here so confused and P##ssed OFF.

After converting outbuildings etc for habitation the regs called for a vapour barrier, however, a time served building inspector told me not to bother as its pointless unless you can seal it 100% which is almost impossible.

Never used the vapour barrier method myself. Just stripped out my Relay for a refresh/rebuild and it was bone dry inside just using silver bubble wrap and recycled plastic bottle insulation after 5 years use

@@PilgrimPods I also worry that some vans are too sealed ie not vented enough and could cause issues with incomplete burning of gas on hobs etc thereby causing CO to be produced due to lack of oxygen

We'll both get there in the end! 😁🙌 With how the world is right now I'm happy just taking my time pottering about with the van and getting out there in it once some sort of normality has returned. The original plan had been to get it finished for this very week for a trip to Scotland. 😄

Hi Craig, sorry but this is a log one...you've done a grand job of the insulation but "tut tut" no vapour barrier lol...only kidding but as a retired building surveyor I will be fitting a vapour barrier but I understand your logic in not fitting it. Because metal isn't breathable any moisture laden air will pass through the insulation and may condense within it at dew point temperature however, worse still would be that it doesn't drop in temperature enough that it condenses on the cold steel walls and soaks your insulation. You have used reflective tape and reflex materials which, together with the foil backed insulation, effectively gives you a vapour barrier. I followed a fellow youtuber for a while who carried out conversions professionally based near Bury but I cant recall his site..anywhoo he said he's converted hundreds of vans and NEVER installed a vapour barrier and has NEVER had one returned to him because of dampness. I'm probably old school so the jusry out. One downside I can see with a vapour barrier is that, any small roof leaks or window leaks would not show on the inside because the vapour barrier works both ways so you could end up with water penetration for months and only see it when it gets behind units at low level and then you have to find the source. Without a vapour barrier youd see a damp patch straight away. Oh hell, I might not bother with one actually lol...love your videos keep em coming. Sorry for the lenghty reply but would have been better discussed over a pint :)

I cringed a little when I saw your name pop up as I thought I was going to get a severe telling off after the vapour barrier advice you gave me a few weeks ago. 😄 I guess there's pros and cons to either route and all any of us can do is decide what's best for us. A notable KZfaqr who's a huge advocate for a moisture barrier and has influenced many to take the same route stressed the importance of a watertight seal in their own video but you could clearly see without being an expert on the topic their own barrier was flawed and in a later video they had a leaking roof vent which dripped straight through their barrier either easily penetrating it or entering an existing gap. I love watching their videos and they have a wealth of advice to offer the community but what I take away from those two videos is that it's really difficult to ensure a perfect seal and you've just highlighted even if you do there can be other issues (which hadn't occurred to me so thanks!). We're probably all just over thinking this either way. 😄 Cheers! 🍻

@@PilgrimPods hehe I wondered if youd recall my comment.....I think I know exactly who you mean....its such a huge subject and, to be honest, if you open doors and windows and have a form of permanent ventilation at night whilst sleeping, your unlikely to get any condensation. My caravan had open vents (with mesh) beneath every seat unit and a vent at high level above the bed. That vent was just a mushroom top constantly open vent. Ive parked and woke up to 3inches of snow on the roof and no condensation and Im convinced its the free flowing air supply but the van never felt draughty. I look forward to your next video

@@thedicksons1284 your comment has been with me ever since I started insulating the van. It was the drainage holes in the sills which finally made my mind up for me. We'll be paying close attention to ventilation too so hopefully that'll help avoid any issues. Time will tell! 🙂

Great work on helsing our van is called Sully and I’ve named every van / camper I’ve ever had our kids love giving them names As for the vapour Barrier I wouldn’t bother I always purchase front window deflectors and leave the front windows open a tiny amount always clears moisture any time of the year Keep up the good work

Her brother restores and shows them and a little of that love for them has rubbed off on her. Our original plan many, many years ago was to buy a T25 until we learned people converted panel vans... The thought had just never occurred to me that folk did that. 😁

I have the same van and is 12 yrs old with 150m on the clock. Mine too is on a budget and am at the stage of the batterns. Ive been worrying lately about the cost of the build in regards spending so much on the presumption the engine is going to be ok and be worth the cost in the end. Obviously no one can predict the future and whether the engines going to be fine. Whats your thoughts on this. Thanks.

I've had friends buy brand spanking new cars and had endless issues with them and friends driving around in old used and abused bangers that just will not die. 😄 I honestly think in part there's a huge element of luck with buying any vehicle but the comforting thing about vans are they're built for big miles. With an older van I'm expecting bills to replace parts through wear and tear but once they're replaced they're replaced. All I could do was find a van that didn't appear to have an arduous previous life, cross my fingers, hope for the best and what will be will be. With regular servicing and maintenance I'm hoping it'll repay that care. 😊🤞

I've a 2014 Sprinter's with 200,000 on the clock....I too thought the same reference what if the engine lets me down? What if it fails an MOT big style? All what ifs !!! I have made the conversation start and well on the way . As I work on the van on the drive the amount of people walking past showing an interest is unbelievable. " Oh I've always wanted to do that" and "how much further have you got with it' most people will never get around to having a go for many reasons. So I take my hat off to all like minded people who choose van building...it's a case of grabbing the bull by the horns as you may never get a chance again.....so go for it ,and if it goes tits up then you can say I had a go. All the best to fellow van builders.👍

Engines and anything can be repaired. You could get your van written off the day you put it on the road and possibly not get back what it’s cost to build so don’t be scared of putting in what you need to make it yours. A good built cosy motorhome is worth repairing if the engine pops but maintain it as it should be.

I'm at about the same stage with mine and I know what he means about the great wall of china. I went for thicker insulation, but that means a LOT more bo Batoning...dont I know it! Regarding the vapour barrier, I totally agree, if you can get it 100% hermetically sealed, what's the point. I think allowing it to breath may be the better option...only time will tell? Mines a L3 H2 relay, by the way. Regards Mick

Thank you, that was the terminology I should have used. 😊👍Being the L2H2 version I've tried my best to find balance between decent insulation and minimum encroachment inside the living area. It's going to be a squeeze for the three of us in there. L3H2 opens up so more possibilities I believe and was what we wanted originally but this van of ours popped up for the right money. I'm just about to put a 400 x 400 midi heki type roof light in, but not sure what size batons to use for the frame. Any suggestions? Guess it depends on roof baton sizes and insulation thickness?

L4H3 opens up a world of possibilities. 😊 If ever we decided to take a year out of work to travel we'd consider something bigger but that's a few years off. I can't recall the exact size wood we used for the framing. I remember the plan was to shape the frame to fit to the corrugated roof and sit flush with the internal rib. I ended up using a 12mm batten across the ribs for the ceiling to attach to meaning I've had to pack the frame out by the same depth in this video in preparation for the next stage. I'll measure up the frame tomorrow and drop the measurements here. We bought the wood from Wickes I know that much. We do have a video of us fitting ours which might interest you. If you haven't guessed already, I try to show folks up close what I'm doing as when I was doing my own research watching videos the person would quite often gloss over what they were doing and not really show you the detail leaving you scratching your head.

@@PilgrimPods thanks very much. Looking at it I think it will have to come level to the rib batons, which are 22mm, then the tongue and grove cladding ...should run smooth. I will check out your other videos. Most I've watched so far (and theres been many) are from greg virgo, the restoration couple and camper vibe, all of which have helped immensely. Are there any that you could recommend? Thanks for the advise, greatly appreciated 👍

@@michealgillman7418 Sir Greg is the go to for most of us I think. Absolutely love his channel and the knowledge he shares even if I don't always agree with him ie vapour barriers and screwing battens to the floor. The advice he shares is amazingly well thought out. He's even created instructional pdfs on some topics and offered them to the community for free where others would try and charge a fee. If there's a task I'm unsure of tackling I just tend to do a KZfaq search, watch a few videos, do a little internet research and then apply my own common sense to what I've learned. I love Camper Vibe too but more so for their vlogs. A channel we've recently discovered and you'll probably find useful if you haven't seen them already is ''Louis The Van'. 👍

7:15 .. My van is the opposite, no windows in the back at all ,,, I'm actually taking out a sliding widow the previous owner put in (Such a shitty job!!!) I cant even explain how bad it was!!! They cut through the roof supports (1994 chevy Step Van) The back rollip roor is going to be our only "window" :)

Vapour barriers are used to stop moisture gaining access from the outside of a building that is built with bricks etc that let moisture through. You see this on timber framed buildings and it’s effective. A van is metal so it can’t let moisture through (unless it’s basically a rusty holed sieve) so no need for a vapour barrier. The most important aspect that a camper needs is adequate ventilation and obviously correct insulation. No ventilation and there is nowhere for the moisture accumulated in the van to go and your van materials absorb it and rot. My opinion but my van is not getting a vapour barrier.

What about dew points? You’ll get condensation built on the metal. That’s why you need a thermal barrier to cushion that from happening😊
