This video is full of many tips and tricks to help those who want to insulate their van conversion.
I chose to insulate my Ford van with Thinsulate after much research. It was easy to cut to size, fit into all the spaces and glue into place with 3M 90 Spray. It took me about 1 week to complete the job.
I chose not to add Reflectix as many have because after additional research I read that it is best if exposed and I would be covering it with the wall fabric/wood.
Rigid insulation was used only on the floor.
Thanks for watching. PLEASE SUBSCRIBE.

You are the first van builder I've seen that's used dynomat. I've used it for years and it does a wonderful job of deadening sound. You won't hear the ping noise of the rain, the engine will be quiet, etc. It does nothing for insulation, just noise, but you will be pleased you bought it and used it.

One thing that's worth doing before final wall assembly is to pull in string from front to back that you leave with the understanding you may need to pull in a wire someday. If the string is there, simply tie wire to it and pull without having to remove wall, insulation, cabinets or anything else.
@artisticadventurervan7472

Alan Pinho One of the things we did is not to cover the walls at the beginning but as we worked. The cabinets are easily removable and we are able to get to all the electric. And yes we ran a extra wire across the top - just in case the first one didn't work.

Great job and very informative. Can't wait to try it. I am currently in my fifth wheel and have not found a van yet. I wonder how well it would work behind wallboards in my RV walls? I have metal studs in a slide room that is really giving me fits. The studs were supposed to be covered at the factory but I have learned they were not. They tend to be cooler than the insulated parts of the walls and will sweat in humid, cold temps when heat is being used. This looks thin enough to go over the studs as well as in recesses between studs and I can simply reinstall the wallboard. I think!

Coming very good and you have selected one of the best combinations of sound and thermal insulation. To do the ceiling get 2 or 4 extendable tent poles and a bit of plywood to spread the force and they will hold the lining very well.

Thanks for your amazing video! I've watched a few others you've made a *love* your build. I've got all of my Thinsulate pieces cut to fit and will be sticking them to the walls this weekend. One question: Any thoughts on removing Thinsulate down the road for some reason (degradation, new insulation ideas, etc.)? It's not a big concern, but does it seem to you like the fluffy white material would get completely stuck to the walls and be hard to clean? Would it help to stick the black side to the walls, or would that compromise the insulation? Hopefully I'll just enjoy my toasty van forever and not have to think about it ;)

DT 59 I am comfortable sleeping until it gets in the 30’s then it is too chilly to want to get up. The van heats up quickly with the Buddy Heater or by cooking on the propane stove. In the mid 70’s the van heats up so I need to turn a fan on but that is mostly because of the front windows. If the windows are covered then it doesn’t heat up as quickly. I use the engine air conditioner in extreme heat like 106 degrees at Burning Man.

Here is a small tip about the glue you're using you should let the glue flask 1st which means let it get sticky before you apply the insulation to it so in another words just apply the glue wait for about 20 minutes for it to get sticky and then stick your insulation to it it's a lot easier

Clever trick pulling and pushing the insulation through the door and other cavities...but, wouldn't it be both easier and better to use spray foam expanding insulation there?
@artisticadventurervan7472
@artisticadventurervan7472 7 жыл бұрын
David Golembeski the spray foam couldn't get into most of the spaces I pulled it through. Also I wouldn't recommend putting it near the door lock mechanism. Finally, IMHO, it is messy. BTW- I don't recommend the expanding foam in enclosed areas as it will expand the interior or exterior of the van if your not careful.
@David-rx2to
@David-rx2to 7 жыл бұрын
I believe there are a couple different levels of expansion available with spray foam...some more, some less, and the door lock area could be blocked off or wrapped somehow before spraying to avoid mucking up the mechanicals. As far as bulging out the exterior panels of the van...I think the foam will take the path of least resistance when growing, so as long as there are interior "holes" for it to expand into, it shouldn't "bump" out the exterior metal skin. IMHO...since I haven't actually done this yet.
@artisticadventurervan7472
@artisticadventurervan7472 7 жыл бұрын
David Golembeski I agree with your thoughts but I still don't think you would be happy with the option in many places. And I don't think the nozzle could spray it in many of the areas I put the Thinsulate. Plus I know the Thinsulate is in the cavity and in many places I wouldn't be able to tell if the foam penetrated the avoids. If you decide on the foam I would be interested in your outcome.

Is the 3M thinsulate better for insulation than the foam boards? Most van converters use the foam boards. I prefer the 3M thinsulate if much warmer plus so much easier to install.
@christinefeaster4102
@christinefeaster4102 6 жыл бұрын
Polyiso boards are much warmer and don't trap water. However, they're rigid, so takes more work to perfectly shape for the nooks, crannies, and curvature of van walls, and if you don't get a perfect seal then it can squeak when loose edges rub against the van wall while you're driving. 3M Thinsulate is still a good value, easy to work with, and has better sound insulation. Over time, the thinsulate can start to sag in the walls from being shifted around with van movement. Everything has trade-offs.

I think I would have installed the Thinsulate with the black backing stuck to the structure. Reason...... If you drive your van in any area where it's cold enough to get frost, then the metal is going to get frost on the inside. With the white fiber side to the cold metal, it may hold moisture in the fiber, because now the black backing is not allowing air to circulate through the fiber. Did you ask the manufacturer ?

There are a 109 comments here, so it's possible somebody else has asked my question. Does the insulation have to hug the walls and to into all the nooks and crannies? Why not just hang the stuff like a curtain and attach it with Velcro or magnets?
@artisticadventurervan7472

Ruth C. It can not easily be attached with Velcro or magnets. It needs to expand to be lofty as insulation is best when fluffy not compressed.

The 3M SM series of Thinsulate Automotive Acoustic Insulation you are using is not meant to be thermal insulation. It designed to be used as noise damping. If you want thermal insulation, you need 3M™ Thinsulate™ Insulation (Type C) or 3M™ Thinsulate™ Featherless Insulation. But these are expensive. Better to simply use reflective foam insulation that you can get at any hardware stores. If it is good enough to insulate your house, it is good enough for the van.

sok8888 I disagree that it doesn't work as insulation since it has an R value and the insulation in out homes absorbs water and needs a vapor barrier.
@madeinmichigan6773
@madeinmichigan6773 6 жыл бұрын
That's seems like an extremely expensive and time consuming process. Did you not want to use a spray foam and get a better R-13value plus you still could have done an overlay of an acoustic barrier if you wanted more silence. It's a great idea but I just feel if your going to be in cold climates it may not be enough?
@artisticadventurervan7472

one moment at a time I don’t like spray foam, you can’t tell where it goes, it is messy, it off gasses and it might bulge. In my opinion. I am not sure how you get R 13 with it. That would have to be a mighty thick layer.

Artistic Adventurer Van I didn't mean that the foam was an R13 value I said with maybe another layer of batting but it's your home 😊 I just hope in cold weather your going to be warm enough? You may need a really nice heat source 😊

You have plenty of panel damper. Only 20% coverage is needed for effective panel resonance control.

isn't that insulation soke up water/condensation? that type will make rust and mull over time. use a spray bottle and spray a little water and you will see it ceep the water.

It would be a great idea if you re did your van build videos and made sure the audio was louder. You could use your old van build videos but just talk over the video. I so wanted to view your van build but got extremely frustrated because your audio was so low nothing I did on my end made it so I could hear you. Bummer big time.

Those uninsulated molded beams are going to transfer heat to or from the vehicle body. You have not insulated your van until all of the metal areas are covered.

You can set the speed to 1.5x or 2x, or you can shut your yap and move on to another video. She probably HAS been to a doctor for her tremor.

Eddie As you can see by the comments, I am very aware of the problem. Sorry that I didn't boost the volume before I posted it. I have found it is easy to hear on my iPhone or when I bump up the KZfaq sound.

Kathleen, why take offense to constructive comments from people that truly want to be able to hear the content? I cannot hear the audio well enough either. Clearly you don't recognize when someone is saying something in jest. either. Okay, I will GO AWAY as well. I am NOT spoiled though, I am just trying to give some feedback like these other people. Being rude towards your viewers will just lose you subscribers.

sorry,wont work,u need to install a vapor barrier,you can apply all the insulation u want ,but u must have an impregnable sleeve around the insulated space,and then u need proper fresh air supply and stale air exhaust,without these 3 items ,you will develop mold and u will not have proper heat retention,and cooling,i would suggest u go talk to an insulation expert or a building framing carpenter

She does not know that without moisture barrier, the first few winter cooking in the van will load the insulation full of moisture that will form condensation (water droplets) on contact with the van's cold metallic shell. Beside the mold problem, eventually, same will dripped down and accumulate at the bottom of the van. The van will rust out within a year.

Dunno about the Transit but most euro vans have weep holes at the bottom. Impossible to have an effective vapor barrier with all the attachments and not necessary with this insulation it does not absorb water.

adanacman666 this insulation does not absorb water. I have had no condensation so far with large day and night temp ranges.
