I got my van insured for dirt cheap as a personal delivery vehicle, it took quite a bit of back and forth as they tried insuring me according to a company or working vehicle, which seem to have a much higher rate.

I just went through entire process in Ontario - very simple if you find one of the few insurers that do diy - I gave them a list of purchased items no pricing / they requested an appraisal by an independent and motor vehicle inspection (new van) - they insured it at appraisal value no questions…. Their big issue and all the others I find and many people get refused because of a propane whatever installed - regardless of it been certified by anyone.

Hi! Thank you for this comment. Very helpful. I'm going to insure my first conversion in Ontario soon. Could you share, what is your insurance company and what was your experience so far?

This whole topic is so confusing ... I’m shocked that there’s isn’t more KZfaq’s on this. I bought a van converted and I don’t have receipts so I’m ha in hard time getting insured. The seller is trying to find them though... I think you don’t need them (until you you need them ie when if you have an accident). Then the insurance company will want to know everything was done correctly. I think.....

That is true. Full disclosure. My insurance company knows all details. They would not insure it until it was completed. I would try taking photos of the conversion and talking to your broker. One up side to Canada is there is no rules on RV certification. In the US it’s state by state.

Interesting. Here in the US, I’m insured with USAA, but they don’t do recreational vehicles. They have a relationship with Progressive. I asked someone on one side or the other what makes it an RV. The answer was plumbing. I’m not done yet, so I haven’t moved ahead on anything else.

It would be interesting to talk to them after you have water and a sink.

It seems in the USA if you’ve diy-Ed your van to a camper they won’t insure it, only a certified conversion company. A lot of van folks think they’re insured but they didn’t disclose how they converted it and I’m not sure but I think that makes your coverage void.

You can get your van certified at a RV repair place. You will have to have water and any gas or electrical as per code. Mine is built that way. I have drawings from the place I got the solar parts to show wire size etc. Plumbing is no problem to keep legit. Just your propane take needs to be outside. Rack on the back and hose through the back wall or floor.

How much does it cost you in AB, and how much did you ensure it for?

I’m with Cooperators Insurance. It’s about $1800 a year for $70,000.

Update I this. I got it to $90,000 for $900 and year. I went back with more receipts after counter top and heater installation and finish trim. Still under sale value but fair enough for me. Cooperators Insurance was very good about it and my local broker was awesome!

Hey Dadz Vanz, Couple questions if possible: 1. What is your local co-operators? I went to mine in Canmore and not had much luck. 2. Specifically you said Camper not motorhome? 3. Did you have propane and electricity in the vehicle?
