Happy to shoot a George Fuller 1898 hammers and a Thomas Bland box lock. Both get more attention at the shooting school than fancy OUs. Novelty value I suppose.

The sport is being killed off by ammunition prices where only the very well off can shoot! I shoot only vermin, but will be stopping that soon! A good friend gave me some cartridges 50, and when they are finished so am I

You aren’t wrong. When I got old enough to by my own ammunition (as apposed to dad) so I could finally shoot as much as I wanted, you could buy quality shells for just under $4 a box. Just last week I ordered some 2 1/2 bismuth and they were over $60 plus shipping. 😞

I see your concern but that bench is actually an extremely soft wood, so soft in fact you can put down on it with your thumb and make a dent. I can assure you if any damage was done in this video it would have been to the mech and not the gun 💪🏼

I imagine if the gun has 2.5” chambers use cartridges which are suited to a chamber of that size like 65mm cartridges maybe max 28g 5/6s for game and 21g or 24g cartridges for clays
@pbgd3
@pbgd3 2 жыл бұрын
@@tst698 that's basically the idea. Load manuals show pressures so you start there. look for the powders that are low pressure but good velocity. I have a 16 gauge load with 8000 psi that chronos near 1300fps and one with nearly 10,000 psi with similar speeds the low pressure pushes smoothly the high pressure is a snappy recoil. For these old guns you want that smooth push.

Just come across a A Nester of Limerick which I believe closed down in 1880 . It’s a hand built sidelock with 30 inch Damascus barrels hammer gun . The side by side has been handmade to a superb standard and is still solid and slick to this day . Someone has put on a Bakelite butt plate at some stage but it still points and shoots like a dream . I believe a lot of Irish gunsmiths were forced to close around that time and moved to England and went to work for gunsmiths like Purdey and Holland and Holland etc . The skill they had is superb and although this gun is not worth nowhere near as much as a Boss , the mechanics and action are on a par , in my humble opinion . I am in the process of bringing this piece back to life . I found it on a shoot and the owner was putting 2 3/4 steel 28s through it 😳 . I pointed out it’s only rated for 2 1/2 lead only and he saw the error of his ways . My problem is that if I owned a £30,000 gun I would still shoot it weekly , after all that is what they are for 😁 . Do you have any info on A Nester of Limerick guns David , maybe not . Ps that Boss is exquisite 👍

@@pbgd3 yes, it does and is happening, but the greatest influence stems from the clay pigeon shooting crowd who tend to think heavier wildfowling loads using larger shot are a necessity.

Rough, careless handling of this gun. I wouldn't want him handling my side-by-sides in such a cavalier manner. I saw no attempt to keep staining or tarnishing finger prints off either the gun or in handling all the accoutrements. No gloves nor clean wiping of the pieces after handling. He seems clueless.
